Hey /mahjong/, first time making a thread so I hope I don't fuck up everything.

What do you guys use when you wanna get someone into learning japanese mahjong? We could use some newcomers.

If I can't teach them in person, I use this page:

http://www.japanesemahjong.com/reachmahjong/intro.htm

It's easy to understand and pretty well organized too, so if the person you're teaching doesn't wanna do real life stuff yet you can tell them what chapters to skip and which are the most important.

The Yaku page of that site is pretty bad, though, so I tell them to learn the Yakus at http://arcturus.su/wiki/List_of_yaku

 No.47

I learned it from this guy. Almost 4 hours video explanation, split up in small parts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mh0brmqq4sk

And for practice if you don't to face human opponents: http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html

I fucking love the comprehensive walkthrough, the only problem I found with it is that it might turn people off unless they're interested enough, like some scrubs might go "oh damn 1 hour eugh" and give up without even trying, especially since these people don't know that setting up the game is the most complicated part.

I thought it was an advanced tutorial more than anything, since it taught me some stuff I never knew about.

I've though about making a very basic short tutorial with tips on memorizing the kanji and everything just to get people hyped to learn more, but I've got no idea where to start with that.

Same.

Once I felt comfortable with that I just played on http://www.tenhou/0/?L0 3rd option (open tanyao + red dora, I believe), with a yaku list and scoring sytem in another tab. Was just the wikipedia article for japanese mahjong rather than arcturus, but it seemed to be accurate enough.

>>51

Yeah, some friends have been daunted by it but then I tell them that 3hrs of youtube video really isn't all that much if you compare it to say learning to play Dota or League.

ok, I see your point.

There are a lot of very basic introductions into mahjong that ignore all the advanced stuff and just tell you "you have a hand, you draw tiles, you should get yaku".

I would say the best way to make them learn the rules is to like the game. For example, I started to learn riichi because I wanted to understand what's going on in Saki. And nothing is more satisfying than understanding something. While Saki might not be the best choice to introduce people to Mahjong, Akagi should do the job.

I'm trying to learn, still suck

My curiosity started with Killer7

I was pretty sure that the real game didn't end with everyone dead

I watched Akagi and learned nothing, other than how to be a badass

I watched Saki and it renewed my love for Japanese schoolgirls, but it had less mahjong

I've been using that within >>47

Trying to read Jenn Barr's book, will see how that goes, because I hate reading

One thing I have been using while I have short bursts of time, <10 minutes, is the Android app Mahjong Virtual TENHO-G

It has a Fu count practice with increasing levels, and what it calls Mahjong Calc, which isn't a calculator, but a rolling quiz on Fu, Han and points payouts based on the supplied winning hand.

Not great, but will help learn you some Yaku and combinations

picture related; it's me getting rekt

neither Akagi nor Saki are good to learn Mahjong.

Saki because they just go lelelel magic power rinshan turning a garbage hand into baiman like nothing.

Akagi because you need at least know something about the rules to follow the story (not like Saki). It's like advanced theoretical training for beginners. Same for Ten.

 No.78

>>77

yeah akagi doesnt teach you to play mahjong it just inspires you to learn it

also is there anywhere I can play washizu mahjong, I was hoping for a mode in thmj4N but it didn't exist

 No.79

>>77

I felt Akagi got away from the game more as it went on anyway

>>78

I know Four Winds Mah Jong has a transparent tile option, but that won't help

I'm surprised that it isn't a more popular option

There's the NDS akagi game, which has washizu mahjong and it's pretty good if you can get over the headache of having to control 2 people at once, akagi and yasuoka, along with the repetitive music and cheap graphics.

I've heard from someone I know that you can play a ton of variants through abletop simulator on steam, but I don't know how that works.

 No.81

>>80

>tabletop simulator

oh god why didn't I think of that

 No.82

>>81

I don't think it has been implemented well, at least from what I read

 No.83

>>82

Yeah, TTS's mahjong thing is pretty unfinished. The walls have the japanese tiles, but it also has seasons, flowers and blue-square white dragon(along with the regular blank haku), so if you wanna play riichi you gotta find a way to bypass those tiles.

 No.84

>>83

It seems as if they are uninterested in having a good setup for Mahjong, just "here are your walls, you sort it out"

 No.85

>>84

wasn't TTS one of those games that scream "PLS MOD ME!" in your face? I'm sure there might be a way to make useful riichi setup.

 No.86

>>85

It is, but I meant officially

It seems better suited to slower paced physical gameplay, but I don't know how versatile the physics engine is

I don't play any tabletop or board games, so I have no impetus to find out

I threw this together for lazy people who don't know all their yaku by heart but hate scrolling through a longass page http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=vu4gqLcN

Might be good to add the Kokushi chankan exception thing, or is that only an optional rule? By the way >>92 thats useful as fuck, I actually wanna use this to learn fu and whatever yaku I don't know yet.

 No.97

>>96

Hmm, it's a rule variation but most places allow it. However it's also pretty rare and not something you can really play around, and most pc/browser games would prompt you anyway, so i don't feel it's worth mentioning in a cheatsheet.

 No.147

TTS is a physics sandbox. It needs rule and mechanics automation.

I'd try to help but no fucking clue how to make a mod
