Brettun's Village is pretty good for odds and sods. Not the same consistent goods as Tandy, but pretty decent for lighter leathers. The leather used in the vamps and uppers came from Brettun's, actually.

Well, I'm >>26 and as much as I'd like to still learn how to make mail myself, my schedule has recently taken a nosedive and I realize I won't have time to work on or even come close to completing the project in time for when I would want it done by (first week of July). To be honest, the cheaper the better since it doesn't need to be functional, but dating an artist I know to not just dick the person being commissioned on pay. So I guess it would be the top half of a top since I won't need my stomach covered, and pants. Chain or scale or style or material don't matter too much I don't think (but would like to have it ran by me first), whichever you're more comfortable with/would be easiest for you/lowest cost.

What's your upper limit on price? Because I don't think I can make pants and sleeves for under $500 even with cheap materials and large rings.

A lot of that price is labor though so if you can find about 30-40 total hours to work on it you could make it yourself for around $100.

Still a WIP but here's my hoodoo hex shirt. Rings are 16g 3/16" stainless. Close to 26k rings at the moment. As far as I know no one has made a shirt from this weave but I could be wrong.

Double Pencil Weave in TRL 16 SWG, 5/16" stainless steel. 14 SWG jeweler's brass wire wrap in grooves of weave. 1/4" x 13" steel rod in the center of the weave provides support.

Jens Pind Linkage 5 in TRL 16 SWG, 5/16" stainless steel.

>Ball
Moorish Rose ball (as in >>4)in 14 SWG, 1/2" jeweler's brass. 1/4" x 1" machine screws for spikes at each of the 5-link units.

Everything is as tight as a drum. The handle doesn't wobble and the ball is held solid by the screws. Weighs a little over 3 pounds although I lack the equipment to be any more precise than that. Somewhere around 1400 rings in the handle+chain and 180 in the ball. Handle is 13" long and chain is 7".

I was wondering, about how long would it take to craft 2 sleeves+shoulder and 2 legs of mail, or pants or whatever would work best. Either chain or scale, both work; I plan on using it for a costume (hence not needing the full suit of it, pic related) and haven't crafted mail before so I was curious just how much time I would need to commit to it. I think it would be rad to learn to do, so I'm more than willing to spend the time learning.

Sorry for the crappy pictures but you get the idea. It's made from large bronze scales woven with 14g 5/16" stainless steel rings; small stainless scales woven with 16g 3/16" stainless; and a few large hardened steel scales for trim. I'm open to critiques as I'm not satisfied with the project yet. It needs a better attachment than just the belt to keep it from sliding around. Oh, and the vest underneath is 18g 3/16" galvy.

A full scale sleeve is difficult to fit properly if you want to articulate the arm at all. That's why I just made it a half sleeve instead but you could probably do a 3/4 length sleeve without a bunch of contractions/seams. Get some big gloves like in your pic and it could work.

I agree that you should definitely get comfortable with regular chain mail first though. If only because scales are significantly more expensive. Worth it though.

I've chosen a ping-pong ball as the core for this piece but depending on your choice of ring size you may need something larger or smaller.

Now go around the opening and build 6-ring units at each point adjacent to 5-6-5 ring units. This by far the hardest step but it should look like pic related when you've done it right.

I myself messed up on this step during this build but I corrected it.

Build one final 5-ring unit at the opening to complete the orb. You may need to adjust the way you slide each ring into the connection in order to get your pliers in a position to close them properly.

The geometric shape of this orb is a truncated icosahedron. Other objects with the same shape include soccer balls and Buckminsterfullerene. There are [12] 5-ring units and [20] 6-ring units.

This is the most difficult chain mail piece to build properly that I know of in terms of connection complexity and visualization. It might be helpful to practice the sheet version of this weave in >>3 before attempting this variant.
