There's a forum with a bunch of other people on it who are willing to play; I'm not dependent on /marx/ (let alone /leftypol/) for players. And you don't need to know about history, pretty much all the context you'd need will be right there in the game or in PMs from the GM (aka me.)

There were "dissident communists" and social-democrats who opposed the Communist Party of Albania, so Trots and whatnot could play too if they don't mind playing as tiny (albeit still armed) groups.

There will be a bunch of modifiers which will determine the outcome of a battle. As numerous as they'll be, they should be straightforward to explain: stuff like weather, terrain, combat readiness, quality of weapons, etc. So for example troops that have been continuously on the run through mountains for many weeks without regular sources of food and shelter will have their morale and ability to fight greatly hampered.

As for what determines results, I simply use an online random number generator.

If an Albanian partisan player gets a bad roll then Enver Hoxha will suddenly appear, even if he's actually at the other end of Albania or trapped in an encirclement or something, and be like "YO, THE FUCK'S THIS SHIT? LET'S SEE THAT AGAIN." Then if the roll is still bad he... cries and runs away I guess.

But yeah partisan formations weren't indestructible and the game should be challenging for all the players, otherwise it'd be kinda boring.

There are some users from RevLeft on it, but also some from various other communities like Alternate History, Paradox, the chans, etc.

During the war Kosovo was "reunified" with Albania by the Italian occupiers so that they could pose as "liberators." The Nazis kept this arrangement as well. Both the CPA and CPY held that this "reunification" was illegitimate and that the status of the region would be decided by a plebiscite after the war, on the basis of a liberated Yugoslavia and a liberated Albania.

But yeah players can play as shitty groups like the Balli Kombëtar and the "Second League of Prizren" which played on anti-Serbian sentiments among Kosovar Albanians, collaborated with the occupiers, and denounced Albanian communists as adherents of a "Slav ideology."

Reminder that this is still a thing.

Of those who expressed interest, what positions would you want to take? As I said before, besides Albania proper the game will also model the situation in Kosovo and those portions of Macedonia and Montenegro annexed to the "Kingdom of Albania" by the Italians, as well as the Çamëria region of north-western Greece, which means that players can join as ELAS and EDES forces too.

Up to you. There's already two other players for the Italians (albeit in political rather than military roles) and a bunch of pro-Italian quisling players, so there is room for an Italian military commander.

There's plenty of room for Albanian partisans. I don't think I could run out of players for them.

- here's the thread where you can sign up. You have to register to be able to view it, but once the actual game starts there will be a public forum area for guests to view the sign-in thread and whatnot.

So far there's:
* 3 Albanian commie players (basically limitless amount of room for more)
* 4 Albanian "nationalist" players (i.e. non-communist resistance, again plenty more room here)
* 1 "Northern Epirus" player (leads a very small political force that fought to have southern Albania annexed to Greece)
* 1 Yugoslav commie (Miladin Popović, who at game's start is interned in Peć/Peja but who was freed IRL by Albanian commies and later helped supervise their political work. There's room for more of these including both Yugoslav and ethnically Albanian partisans in Kosovo.)
* 1 Yugoslav "nationalist" (Kosta Pećanac, anti-communist who collaborated with the Germans. Četniks had a really tiny presence in Kosovo but there is an opening if anyone wants to play as the pro-Mihailović Četniks)
* 1 British guy (a SOE operative, only enters game later on, there's room for more SOE operatives)
* 2 Italian players (both focused on political matters in puppet Albania, there's room for one or two military commanders though)
* 3 Albanian quislings (I think there's enough for now, although I'd accept quislings for Kosovo and Debar/Dibra if anyone cared to join as them)
* 2 Nazis (mostly just operative in Trepča/Trepça as of July 1941, obviously become far more important as war progresses.)

So yeah Kosovo and Çamëria (north-western Greece) could do with players, but I'm sure we'll get them by the time the game is ready to start so feel free to join as whomever you want.

Two more players have reserved positions: one a Yugoslav commie in Kosovo, another an Albanian resistance guy.

So yeah to summarize all the positions that are open: communists in Albania, Kosovo, western Macedonia, north-western Greece (aka Çamëria) and southern Montenegro (e.g. Ulcinj/Ulqin and nearby areas), as well as non- and anti-communists in those areas.

An additional Italian player or two is fine as well. In time other positions will open up (more Nazi spots, as well as British and American officers) but they can be reserved as-is.

You can just give me a general idea of what sort of player you'd want to be (e.g. a northern clan chieftain, a commie focused on propaganda work, etc.) and I should be able to find a historical personality for you to play as.

I still intend to run the game in February; no later than March.

More importantly, I bump this because I'm wondering if anyone has the skillz to draw a large blank outline map for the game (just consisting of borders.) I can add the easy stuff afterwards (rivers, roads, dots indicating towns and villages, etc.)

I can provide images of maps if so (it's not just Albania proper, but also Kosovo, parts of northern Greece, western Macedonia and southern Montenegro.)

Once the game starts you could join the forum and I could give you permission to view one forum area (e.g. the partisans, Italians, or whomever else.) If you ever decide to join the game you'd need to sign up as part of the same side you have permission to view though.

Anyone else would only get a vague outline of what's going on in Albania. IRL basically the only thing the outside world knew as of January 1942 was "there's some resistance to the Italians somewhere."

Bumping this 'cause not much activity over past few days on this board and 'cause game is getting closer to completion. 44 persons have reserved characters thus far.

The areas simulated in the game will be Albania itself, Kosovo, and portions of Montenegro, portions of Western Macedonia, and portions of Greek West Macedonia, and the Çamëria region of Greece.

The rules should be posted on March 5 or 6 (in the thread on the forum, not here unless someone asks for them), then I'll work on the map. I aim to get the game started next week.

Yes. The map still needs to be worked on and I need to check to make sure various aspects of the gameplay are balanced.
