I think in the long run in communist/socialist society it would be good if citizens could get firearms and combat and safety training, etc. and then enforce the law as part of a citizens' millita that they take shifts patrolling around etc. once every few weeks or so. Like make the police less of a separate legal entity and more of an aspect of the masses themselves. As it stands now I think they should be allowed but a license system should be needed to own one, based on having taken safety training courses and learning to use them responsibly. Similar to a driver's license.

In the back of my mind though, I always think about the dangers of having them legal and widespread in terms of violent crime and accidents (I don't really beleive the "it's only taking it away from law abiding citizens" thing.) But it's worth it for the sovereignty and freedom of the people.

I generally agree with Marx on this issue. Any attempt at disarming the masses is simply a way to protect the capitalist class from revolution. As time progresses, greater technological weapons will be available to those with the money, connections and knowledge to circumvent the laws, while the proletariat will be left unable to defend themselves or overthrow their oppressors.
