This is WAY exaggerated. You are only right if you're ever convicted of a felony. Those are the worst. Misdemeanors not nearly as bad, and summaries are retardedly worthless for the most part. Depending on the state you live in, you can get it expunged after a certain amount of time. Then there's differences in the charge, like drug crimes are worse than say being convicted of harassment or something.
Being involuntarily committed to a psych ward is about the same level of a felony, though. Immediate loss of gun rights for one, some other shit you can't ever do, like run for office (have fun with that getting out to the public), joining police force, probation officer, etc. I doubt you'd be able to become anything in the therapist profession either or a teacher. A lot of it is concealed though by law but again, nothing is private anymore in US society, which you can thank both the federal government, particularly the NSA, and companies like Facebook and Google.
I was personally convicted of Harassment after initially being charged with Simple assault, gotta wait 4 years to get it expunged. Also got 2 involuntary commitments as well, one being from a suicide attempt.
