The entire mental health system is a complete and utter scam! The stigma associated with mental illness is no longer an issue, as we're seeing a colossal increase in diagnoses all all types of mental illnesses in the general population. One thing i've noticed on this site, in my peer group, and in rehab/recovery, is that a lot of these so-called mentally ill, have one key thing thing in common- either physical or emotional trauma - often repeated over several years. Most mentally ill people are a victim of unfair circumstance, rather than being actually, organically ill. The problem with these treatment programs, is that they offer the most superficial and general of information and advice, which does not even remotely apply in real life. Instead of giving addicts and mentally ill people the opportunity to learn vocational skills and find fair and meaningful employment, these institutions further cripple the patient, by creating a dependence on the treatment facility and therefore increasing receidivism, and thus increasing profits. The medications don't work at best, and are harmful at worst. Mental illness is also an economic issue, as it is a known fact that poverty breeds mental illness, every time! Therapists are a waste of time and money as well, because they cannot change the conditions of life that make us mentally ill.

Posts like this come from people who don't have any experience with having a mental illness and haven't even taken psychology 101 in high school.

I agree with you on the medication part to a certain extent(they just made me a robot but others have found them to work so whatever), the only real thing that has actually worked is realizing that there is something wrong with me and that is just the way life is going to be. I will not bring everyone down to my level, but I know that I cannot meet the standards of society and thus have abandoned it. I have tried the path of 'getting better' and it failed and left me a miserable wreck.

How would propose that someone who has literally zero interest in anything the material world offers find an employment that is 'meaningful' to them? Because that is how I, and some others of us, feel and there is almost nothing that can change that since it is imprinted in our minds on a fundamental level.

Poverty also isn't nearly as big an issue as you would think. There are all kinds of wealthy people who are very depressed or have other issues and there are all kinds of poor people who are very happy and satisfied with their lives.

Trying to 'fix' the mentally ill with methods like these is like trying force the blind to see. It can't work.

What a bullshit. Look at some stats. Poorer countries are generally more happy and have less suicede.

I have simple way to identify stuff.

If you born with it you need drugs to deal with it.

If it caused by social life or loss someone belove threapy is better.

OP may be right : The purpose of mental institutions isn't to cure mentally ill patients (they can't) but to control them so they don't harm society any further.

That is why psycho-pharmaceutics isn't really a free market and medications have such incapacitating side effects : the drugs aren't meant to heal you but to enfeeble you, by lowering your dopamine and serotonine levels so that you won't have enough energy to do violent deeds, against yourself or others.

The first job of Psychiatrists is to protect society from you. Helping you is further down the list, if even it is in it.

I hope I am wrong, though.

Most of poor countires are in pretty nice places, with nice sunny weather ,which is huge benefactor to be having a good mood, than again they have more homocides, riots, organized crime/armed groups sometimes more powerfull than goverments. Then again countries like Finland, Lithuania and Russia(a bit poor, but still nowhere near central america or africa) which are located in more cold regions are topping suicide charts, even tough they don't have to worry about getting their head cut off or getting shot for fun.
Anyway I would sugest before seeing psychiatrist, to see therapist and psychologist.

no! i am charlie! no seriously, im charlie! but all kidding aside, as soon as i stopped taking my meds, stopped going to therapy, and stopped feeding into the recovery industry, my life got better. Sure, "the program" works very well for some, and i know a lot of mentally ill people, and i know a lot of normies, but it seems to fail the majority it aims to serve…in my own experiences anyways. All these programs are run by normies, who have never touched a drug, or have had any real struggle in life. I was in "program" on and off for about 11 years, and i know the ins and outs. I know recovery like the back of my hand! I can tell you, that the best progress i made was on my own, without the help of some normie therapist, who knows less about mental health and medical knowledge than i do! Therapists and doctors are also restricted in what the can and can't say, can and can't recommend, can and can't prescribe. A true, individualized recovery cannot be tied down by bureaucracy and restriction!

Okay, so because the medications/treatments didn't work for your disorders, that means that they won't work for any disorder?

That is like saying just because zertec doesn't help with doesn't with stomach aches, that means it is completely ineffective. I didn't like the medication I was put on either, and the psychotherapy failed after 2 years, but that doesn't mean I think these disorders can be treated with mere mindsets and encouragement.

Another thing is that when it comes to mental disorders, what works for one person may not work at all for another. I've experienced this on a personal and an extra-personal level. Psychology is still a very young field compared to other fields which is why it is so hit or miss in its success.

I agree with

that the only way to recover is through your own will, but what about those who are suffering from depression to the point where they have no will? To where they see no 'greener grass on the other side?' What about those mad with delusions to the point where they see everyone else in need of treatment, not them? Therapy isn't a super evil bad thing but nor is it a be-all and end-all cure of cures; it is only therapy to help you realize where your problems are and help you fix them. But, in the end, it is always up to you to try and fix them.

Me? Like I said before, I know I am defective and I know I will never comfortably live in touch with current society as it has been proven time and time again. To me there is no more obvious answer other than the fact that I am not meant to be with it, as such, I cast myself out. Better me be alone than drag everyone down to my level.

tl;dr: a therapist/diagnosis can help clear up confusion and give you outside insight on where your problems lie, but it is you who must make the decisions. Medication may work for some while it may not work for others. There is no definite answer here as it all comes down to the individual level.

Parents.

Point is, being born into comfort and privilege won't protect you from mental illness.

Pharmaceuticals are shitty. My doc is a complete pill-pusher, too. Fucker had me on 6 different meds at one point. I only take one of them now, he thinks I'm on 4. I plan to get off the last one next time I see him, but I say that everytime and end up not doing it.

Therapy is good, though. You just gotta find a good one. My old one was fucking awesome, basically just giving advice on what and how to do things, then gives you all the credit for actually doing it which raises confidence.
