I have severe ADD but my psychiatrist wont give me ritalin because I'm vulnerable to psychosis.

I'm tired after reading more than a few sentence of study material and within an hour I might read half a page or do the beginnings of one exercise.

How do I improve my concentration otherwise?

As a person who has ADD too, i just stop reading when i can't read anymore and go do something else.
I hate the feeling when i want to read or learn new things, but can't concentrate.

Have you tried meditating? It's supposed to boost your concentration.

Not OP, but how to meditate?
I have heard of mixed opinions of it.

There are a few methods.

The most common is find someplace quiet where you can sit and relax comfortably without falling asleep, you don't necessarily have to do the whole cross leg pinchy finger thing. Simply sitting in a chair can work.

Once you have a place, close your eyes begin focusing on your breath. A thing I like to do is imagine there is a balloon in my head inflating every time I inhale and then it deflating every time I exhale. Breathe slowly and deeply. Your mind is going to wander a lot, but try and remain focused.

The idea is to get your mind to zero in on one thing, and meditating is a good way to practice that and sharpen your focus. Wrestling with your mind to remain focused on something like breathing is basically sort of way to practice your ability to focus.

Start doing it for about 5-10 minutes every day and, if your schedule permits, try to do it for longer. Such practice will gradually increase your ability to focus on one thing at a time.

A somewhat reliable trick I've found is to spend as much time as possible doing many different things that are related to the stuff you are trying to learn.

Like for example in my case, I'm trying to get a hold of mathematics so I might start with reading the history of mathematics and when my mind starts to wander too much I do some (math) exercises, after which I might play some games that require or encourage math like some RPGs, then watch videos on youtube about math…

Of course I get distracted even still and it's a change in lifestyle which can be difficult to do, but it does make it a little easier to learn stuff without needing as much concentration. It's kind of a workaround though, meditation and sheer persistence are more direct.

Your psychiatrist is right for once. I have ADD too. Ritalin is SHIT.

Additionally, I'm very anxious. It exacerbated that something immense. I can only imagine what it'd do to someone susceptible to psychosis.

You know Lena Kochman is on ritalin/concerta? It's part of why she's such a nut.

Meditation has already been suggested. Try habitrpg too. And play games that give you "focus". That keeps me in a good mental shape.

Counter strike helps me the most, because it has a social element, and gives you periodic rest (warmup, when you're dead etc)

Oh and I really want to plug for nicotine chewing gums/sprays/whatever. Smoking is terrible for your body, but nicotine itself is okay in moderate doses. Messes with your hormone levels in long term though. Makes me less tired.
