Without trying to sound vain or pretentious, nothing quite embodies the Metal underground's spirit quite like a fanzine: the raw aesthete, campy artwork, exclusive interviews, album reviews and insanely cheap pricetag you know will collect value as time passes on.

Forget Decibel. Forget Metal-Sucks. Forget Metal-Injection. Forget Vice. Forget all that bullshit.

Hail the underground! Bring on the zines!

Welcome to /metal/, a board for heavy metal music.

Rules:

Faggotry entails but is not limited to…

I. Edgy Non-Metal Garbage

The following are allowed, but must be kept in a single containment thread. Posting elsewhere will result in a seven day ban.
>metalcore/deathcore
>nu metal
>emo/screamo

In other words, this board isn't for Hot Topic shit. Mocking the aforementioned genres/cringe threads are permitted and encouraged.

Old school hard rock like Deep Purple is fine, as is old punk like Black Flag.

Non metal music in general (jazz, classical, rap, whatever) is also allowed as long as it's kept in a single thread

Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

This album is overrated.

Maybe because Sabbath is overrated, and barely metal at all.

They play so fucking slow, man. I'd put them in the same region as Metallica, i.e. too rock and roll to be metal.

I'd also attribute a great deal of their success to their name, like the grateful dead, the eagles, ozzy, and maiden

Try power and speed metal, metallica and sabbath are slow as fuck

Keep in mind that they were all in their early 20s when it was recorded. It sounds juvenile and unsophisticated because they were all juvenile and unsophisticated.

They at least had good ideas at the time, as evidenced by The Wizard and the title track.

I used to discard it as being "okay" when I was a teen, I always went for thrash and death metal. I even went through a brutal death metal phase that was brief (thank god).

When I was a teen, I also listened to black metal but it was limited, I only liked shit that was similar to death or thrash metal. I liked Absu's work and especially anything to do with black thrash, I ate that shit up.

I only woke up to black metal in my mid 20's, it's pretty strange that it took me so long to realize its beauty. I don't think I truly understood it when I was younger, maybe it's because I expected something more.

I am of course talking about early second wave BM and the minimalist tremolo melodies that lead you into an almost classical feeling of a symphony, with beautiful artistic structure that takes you into a whole new world and progressively turns those riffs into a story and makes them something important.

I wish I would have appreciated it earlier to be honest. Maybe it was just the lack of production that held me back.

Anyways, do you like or dislike black metal? Reasons?

what are your favorite albums? etc…

I'm not a huge fan of black/death metal, so I can't say if this is good or not. Definitely one of the better bands in this area though.

What's your position on heavy-sounding Glam Metal?

The glittery sleaze from L.A.'s Glam scene were my earliest memories of Rock 'n' Roll, so I have a slight soft spot for all of them, even some of the fruitier ones. Some bands still sound heavy even by today's standards.

Not explicitly Christian, I guess. But the lyrics are about Christ's thoughts while on the cross. Considering taking revenge on those that had him killed. Of course, he doesn't.

I have been studying the Great War a lot lately, and since we are living through the 100 year anniversary of the events, how about we have a World War 1 thread? I know there are plenty of bands out there that have used this period for lyrics and imagery.

As a side note, 100 years ago today, the Battle of Verdun was 9 days in, starting on February 21st and would until December 18th, 1916. With estimated 750,000 men lost during the battle.
