Metalzine appreciation thread
Without trying to sound vain or pretentious, nothing quite embodies the Metal underground's spirit quite like a fanzine: the raw aesthete, campy artwork, exclusive interviews, album reviews and insanely cheap pricetag you know will collect value as time passes on.
Forget Decibel. Forget Metal-Sucks. Forget Metal-Injection. Forget Vice. Forget all that bullshit.
Hail the underground! Bring on the zines!
About Black Metal
I used to discard it as being "okay" when I was a teen, I always went for thrash and death metal. I even went through a brutal death metal phase that was brief (thank god).
When I was a teen, I also listened to black metal but it was limited, I only liked shit that was similar to death or thrash metal. I liked Absu's work and especially anything to do with black thrash, I ate that shit up.
I only woke up to black metal in my mid 20's, it's pretty strange that it took me so long to realize its beauty. I don't think I truly understood it when I was younger, maybe it's because I expected something more.
I am of course talking about early second wave BM and the minimalist tremolo melodies that lead you into an almost classical feeling of a symphony, with beautiful artistic structure that takes you into a whole new world and progressively turns those riffs into a story and makes them something important.
I wish I would have appreciated it earlier to be honest. Maybe it was just the lack of production that held me back.
Anyways, do you like or dislike black metal? Reasons?
what are your favorite albums? etc…
Heavyier Glam Metal
What's your position on heavy-sounding Glam Metal?I have been studying the Great War a lot lately, and since we are living through the 100 year anniversary of the events, how about we have a World War 1 thread? I know there are plenty of bands out there that have used this period for lyrics and imagery.
As a side note, 100 years ago today, the Battle of Verdun was 9 days in, starting on February 21st and would until December 18th, 1916. With estimated 750,000 men lost during the battle.

Is metal immune to feminism?
I can't think of anything else where literally 100% of the audience would reject feminism entirely, none of their tricks work here.
>they can't call metal sexist because being looked down upon by society/being told to "turn down" is a major theme of a lot of metal
>they can't say it's offensive because that's half the point
>they can't demand that white men be replaced with women or non-whites because no one would support such an idea to the point that they'd have no one on their side at all
>they can't infect metal as a community because each metalhead has their own unique and very specific tastes while genres and subgenres are constantly at war and divided, although they all still possess the above traits
>they can't pretend that they've been 'longtime metal fans' like they do with video games because if they don't know what they're talking about it'll be extremely easy to tell, and with the exception of things like keeper of the seven keys, SOMEONE will call your taste shit.
>if they at some point gain any kind of a foothold on metal they'll be forced to deal with people like Joey DeMaio that would utterly destroy them in every way
Songs with righteous profound lyrics
Hail, I am but a casual listener but today I heard this beautiful song. Their lyrics speak to me deeper than anything else I've ever heard. I wish these lyrics were part of a religious text that every child was forced to listen to and meditate on.
Can you recommend songs with messages in them? Does not have to have comprehensible vocals.
Your metalhead path
Tell us a bit about yourself. What do you listen now, what did you listen before, how did you find this music, etc. Friend told me that metal is much like drugs where you just keep looking for something heavier and stronger.Metal Humour
Put anything that would be humorous to a metalhead. Please keep le ebin 9g0g maymays to a minimum, it'd be better if we post things like humorous interviews of metal musicians, extreme tryhards and extremely shitty metal and/or metalcore/indie rock pretending to be metal.Damn

Finnish metal
I've been into metal for a while now and I have noticed Finland's contribution from the beginning. I first heard Demigod when I was a young teenager, at the time I was addicted to Floridan death metal. Once I heard Demigod I started to question the genre. The creative tremolo riffs and excellent songwriting made me wonder, what else is there in death metal? I then extended my interest to Scandinavian BM and European DM and BM.
Anyways, ten years or so later I am still looking back to see how Finland helped to create artistic works in metal. I mean, bands with traditional sounds that add a little bit of Finnish flavor into them, like Abhorrence, Demilich, Beherit, Demigod, Amorphis, Sentenced, Funebre etc…
Anyways, this is the official Finland thread.
Albums of 2015
ITT: Your favourite album of 2015.
Mgła is overally my favourite band, and this album doesn't dissapoint. They always write rather simple songs, with just a few riffs, and amazing lyrics. The only downside to this album is Exercises in futility III in my opinion. The only mediocre song here, all the others are amazing.
Other than that, I'd have to say that Tribulation's Children of the Night and Ghost's Meliora were also incredible albums.
What cought your attention this year?
Metal vs. Punk Backgrounds
Would everyone here generally agree that punks tend to come from upper-class families and environments while metalheads come from a poorer background? All I have is anecdotal evidence on this subject but this seems to be true to me.
ITT: Discuss why metal is better than punk.
Short Hair
Hey /metal/
I have relatively long wavy hair, it comes to my chest. However, it's been bothering me for a while. Long hair takes more time to take care of and I think wavy hair makes me look like a faggot. I'm not going to post pictures on internet but my facial structure is similar to Henry Cavill, if this matters. Second picture is the hairstyle I'll go for if I cut my hair, should I do it /metal/?
So, I went to en.metal-tracker which is a torrent site exclusively for metal, and I decided to just load everything there by seeders and scrolling through download anything I hadn't heard of that was popular, anything that had a cool name or cover, and some other stuff just for shits (initially I was looking for the Spinal Tap discography, but that only had one seed and was taking forever so I decided to get some other stuff in the meantime.)
Now, there's some stuff I've heard of in here, I'm not a *complete* pleb. I intentionally downloaded a few turds out of curiosity, but there's a lot of stuff in here I'd never heard of.
Anything particularly *good* from this pile though?
-Listened to the Gloryhammer cds, after seeing them mentioned here actually. They weren't awful, but nothing especially caught my attention.
-Cage had a couple songs I might listen to again, but overall felt kind of edgy meh.
-Huntress sounded like Dethklok with a female vocalist. Her vocals were mediocre though. I'm going to give it a second listen.
-Lindemann was exactly what I expected. I'd already heard some of the songs from it. The tunes are catchy enough, because I like Pain. Don't know that I like it as much as either artist, though.
Alright /metal/, perhaps you can help me with this problem I've been working on. Now, I'm no fan of death/metalcore, but I do unfortunately know some people with horrible taste in music, and one thing I've noticed is they have to add core to the end of all the other genres.
Speedcore, mathcore, vikingcore, etc.
And then they go in the completely opposite direction referring to deathcore as death metal.
I have tried to educate them on the proper terminology and the distinction between genres, but nothing works. My hypothesis is that the genres are so hated, that fans if to try to bring the other genres onto the same level with the addition of core in the genres name. What are your thoughts on this?
Diamond Head
What do you faggots think of Diamond Head?
I fucking love Lightning to the Nations and some songs of Borrowed Times, but everything else doesn't appeal to me.
Maybe because I did love pre Black Album Metallica, but what do you fags think?
I think I can't go without a year without listening to a Diamond Head song.
How long will metal last/
This album came out February 13, 1970. That was over 45 years ago. Many people agree that this album is the very first metal album. The 70's and 80's were when metal peaked in popularity, but that does not mean that it did not stay popular. It just went more underground. Metal seems to be going strong with little sign of dying off. Yet more and more of the original metal musicians are dying and it brings into question how long our beloved music genre will continue on. I personally believe that if metal ever dies it will be many many decades from now. I have no doubt in my mind that metal will live to see a century of existence and more. It will change and more subgenres will be created, but it will always be metal. I believe metal will essentially be a more underground version of classical music in the sense that people will still be listening to old songs and appreciating the talent behind them.
Anybody seeing/seen any good shows? I'm going to see this, Allegaeon, and Blind Guardian soon.
Already saw Allegaeon earlier this year. They put on a great show, but there were only 15 people there. I don't see how they're going to get anyone to come out with Act of Defiance headlining. Do you really think there are people who just want to see Chris Broderick play mediocre thrash?
So now that some days have passed, what does everyone think of the new Ghost album, Meliora. You can listen to it in the embedded vid if you haven't already.
Honestly, I was expecting the three tracks that were released prior to the album release to be the best it had to offer, but I was surprised to find out that they actually are some of the weaker cuts in this record, though I use the term "weak" lightly, as I'd say that every song on here is at least as good as the best songs off Infestissumam. I wasn't much of a fan of that album really, though it had some standouts, it really seemed like everything they had going for them turned sour on their sophomore project. But Meliora seems almost like the natural progression from Opus Eponymous, everything that they had going for them there has kind of fully blossomed with Meliora. It's my favorite record from them yet.
But yeah, what do you guys think about it?
As you're probably well aware, this board is about as dead as Per Yngve Ohlin. It only gets around one post per day, and that's on a fast day. However, I have an idea that will maybe help revive the board.
You see, some boards like to hold what are called tea parties, which is where a bunch of boards all get together on one specific board and talk about whatever. I know that /baphomet/ had one recently, so maybe it would be good if we were to have one. However, the name "tea party" sounds pretty gay, so let's call it a beer party instead. And since it's October, we should hold the beer party on Halloween. So what do you say?
/grim/ SPOOKYMAS STREAM: SEXTUPLE FEATURE EDITION
Well everyone, since my stream has gotten completely fucked over the other day due to work and my internet being shit, I'm going to have to stream all three of the movies I had planned on from yesterday in addition to the three movies I was doing today.
I'd like to start earlier than UTC 3:00, but no one will show up if I do that, so I guess I'm sticking with my original plans and then will be streaming a bunch of other shit after that:
10/31/15: Modern Horror
Modern American Horror:
Blair Witch Project OR The Ring OR Grave Encounters (UTC 3:00)
/V/H/S/2 (UTC ~5:00)
It Follows (UTC ~7:00)
Modern Foreign Horror:
Inside OR Martyrs
Pulse (Kairo) OR Noroi (The Curse) OR Audition
The Babadook OR Let The Right One In
Since fucking no one gave their input on what movies to stream for this last week, I'm going to be streaming based on my own discretion. HOWEVER… I am willing to stream multiple movies from each OR if people want to start early. For instance, I will stream Inside and Martyrs if there are people who are interested in starting the stream early.
If you are interested in starting the stream early and are going to actually show up, post here >>>/grim/320

Albums you are excited for
I really need to hear the Abbath album. If the rest of the songs he wrote are as good as this one then it will be amazing. He seems to have gone back to the first few Immortal albums a bit with his writing. This song is called Fenrir Hunts so this album may be norse mythology themed rather than Blashyrkh themed. It would make sense if he left behind the Blashyrkh lyrics for Immortal.

The Book of Souls
HOLY SHIT IT'S pretty good
I'd say this is their best post-breakup album they've done, which is a pleasant surprise. It's relatively better than A Matter of Life and Death and significantly better than Final Frontier. My only big complaint is that most of the songs are waaaay longer than they need to be, with a lot of solo filler taking up big portions of the track. Something tells me they write songs like this so that Bruce can take a break during a show and prevent his voicebox from bursting into flames. I know this is a Maiden tradition, but in the old days they usually had two long songs on average per album. Glad to see them putting this much effort into their new stuff, though.
Speed of Light is hype as fuck and has a hype as fuck video to go along with it.
Shadows of the Valley is good, but it sounds oddly similar to both Wasted Years and Where Eagles Dare.
If Eternity Should Fail took me a few listens, but it's grown on me quite a bit. I especially like the name of the song for some reason.
Empire of the Clouds isn't the masterpiece they obviously wanted it to be, but it's easily the comfiest metal song I've ever heard, and I've listened to some surprisingly comfy sludge/doom/funeral metal.
Everything else is ranges from decent to meh. Glad they managed to make up for Final Frontier.
Same Name
Welcome to the first edition of Same Name
Stupid idea I had, post two songs with the same name, and vote on which one you like better. Starting with two classics: Candlemass and Blind Guardian with their respective Mirror Mirror's.
Embed is Blind Guardian's, here's Candlemass'
I'm looking for more albums to get into. Be a good Anon and Recommend me some good Black metal and Death metal albums. (No deathcore, faggy shoegaze or shitty Djent) will accept blackened death.
Pic related: it's my humble yet good CD collection as an idea of what I already like/have.
Favorite album art?
What's your favorite album art of all time? For me it's a tie. Darkthrone's A Blaze in the Northern Sky cover really embodies about everything that I love about black metal in general. It's dark, foreboding, and oh-so evil. And Helloween's cover for Keeper of the Seven Keys II is the other. I really like everything about it, the setting, the somewhat fantasy nature of it, and the surrealness.
>Pete died after Dead Again, which had many hxc inspired tracks hearkening
back to his youth
>The album we could've got, Double Crossed could have been Slow Deep and Hard II
>Or something more traditional/spiritual inspired doom like Candlemass or Electric Wizard
>But he died of a seed or small piece of food causing sepsis that could've been prevented by a simple surgery
Life's cruel.

So I recently came across this thing called the "Grimposium".
http://globalnews.ca/news/2146406/grimposium-sheds-light-on-bigger-issues-in-metal-music-industry/
At first glance this looks like another one of those circlejerks where academics try feebly to wrap their heads around metal.
>Currently in its second year, the Grimposium is a special opportunity for metal heads to get together and talk about their common interests.
But then I saw this:
>The Grimposium will also host discussions on racism, misogyny and homophobia within the heavy metal scene, as well as debate how to properly discuss these topics.
It became clear to me that this was a thinly veiled attempt at pushing social justice bullshit onto the metal scene. I decided to do some digging and came across pic related.
>Contemporary Issues In Metal Journalism
>A panel on how journalists deal with sensitive material in the extreme metal scene
And look at the first name on that roster: Kim Kelly. Let me remind you that Kim Kelly is the same metal journalist who tried to demonize Dragonforce based on lyrics some of the members wrote 20 years ago.
She was also the first to promote Castrator, which she called a "feminist death metal band".
It's obvious what's going on here. This "Grimposium" has been set up to devise ways of pushing social justice bullshit onto the metal scene. It's DiGRA all over again. You guys wanna place any bets on how long it will be until the metal press declares that metalheads are dead all on the same day?
i know many of you guys don't like folk metal, calling it too cheesy and stuff, but check this out, this band is out to safe folk metal, srsly take a good listen, im more of a thrash fan myself but i love it, a more thrashy song by this band is wolvetiid, look it up, they rock. also, post more bands like this pls
True Satanic Black Metal are bands such as Darkthrone, Aryan Satankampf, Graveland, the Gestapo 666, Satanic Warmaster, Beherit and Impaled Nazarene. You can listen to Metallica if you want, but you do not understand anything about the real Hitleric Nazi Black Metal. You are just a poser and you can fuck off the whole scene. Black Metal is real music, not intended for animals like you, but the real Satanic Misanthropists who do not care about people like you dampers.
Black Metal is music for the elite and you do not understand it. None of you understand the real Satanism. You ridiculous little kids. Our worldview is based on Wotanic Hitlerism, on a personal level satanic individualism, collective level Hitleric Fascism. Without an understanding of the theoretical occultism, it is useless to dream of understanding the Wotanic worldview. None of you can understand Wotanism, for you are all intellectually earthworms. You can not reach the elite level of Satanism, so why even you dream about it. Satanism and Black Metal are the elite. For real misanthropists.
Meet your new board owner
Hi there. The original board owner didn't log in for two weeks, so I'm the new board owner. The original board owner was a lazy, incompetent faggot who never did anything. He was so lazy and incompetent that he never even bothered to add tags to the board. I plan to change all of that. I've already taken the liberty of adding tags. I've also changed the CSS to something more metal. If you have any questions, ask them here. This is also a banner thread, so feel free to post them and I'll upload them.
Der melodeath ist ???
I'm just starting to get into melodic death metal. Recommend me some good melodeath albums. (I don't like in flames but I'll try anything. I thought the jester race was pretty bland). I'm not looking for 2 good songs on an album, I'm looking for all around good albums.
Alright faggots, oldfag here. I've heard every riff, every variation on themes, and motifs that extend into eternity. I've dropped out of the scene for some years out of boredom and have stopped paying attention to every band on myspace and bandcamp from disappointment.
Now as far as I'm concerned, Burzum killed metal. Varg's outright rejection of traditional death metal forms inspired Mayhem, Darkthrone, Emperor, and all those edgy Satan faggots. Everyone since has been either a copycat of a previous band, or has been riding gimmicks to success (by adding traditional instruments, like a flute, or technical death metal, which is nothing but masturbation imo).
So, in the last, say, 10 years, has anything interesting been produced? Spare me your 80's thrash revival (with a twist!) I want something creative.
Embedded is something no band can replicate with gimmicks, and sums up what I'm talking about.

Why did he have to die? Even by modern standards his music is ahead of its time. Every Death album added something new and original and I cannot help but wonder what an album after The Sound of Perseverance would have sounded like. Lyrics?
Does the lyrical content of a song matter at all to you? I know some people just completely view the voice as another instrument and disregard lyrics entirely.
As for myself, I find it hard to listen to music that seriously promotes something that I'm opposed to (NS black metal, Christian stuff, etc), though I really don't think that there's a lyrical theme that would be enough to attract me to an artist or band.
Thoughts?

So, I was talking to my girlfriend earlier about how the Avantasia cover of Lay All Your Love On Me has been stuck in my head recently, and I thought she'd like the lyrics because she's really turned on by possessive, jealous boyfriends and selfish love.
