machinations of dementia stands as the epitome of technical/progressive music in my eyes.
free of repetitive structures, every song is a single flow of notes that is always leading to the next, hardly ever repeating itself (and when it does, you don't recognize it without listening carefully)
riffs that don't sound like your generic chuga-chuga OR the pentatonic blues noodling of so much metal, instead, there are melodic legato guitar leads over technical bass lines, or harsh staccato chords over groovy drums.
the ammount of counterpoint between the bass and guitar is staggering, with unexpected twists and turns.
the ammount of musical ideas is breathtaking. a short phrase of a handfull of notes may interject at any point and change the flow of the song.
several songs change mood during the course of their duration, and a good portion of them do so without it beeing noticable, because the change isn't abrupt, but smooth and subtle.
while it isn't the most brutal, blazing, technical shred out there, it is MORE than technically competent, and in any case the level of musical understanding, both in individual parts and in structuring is absolutly unrivaled.
even after 60 listenthroughs, i still occationally notice new details about this masterpiece.

>>480Yep, metal is doing great. Sure, in the 90s metal in the English speaking world started to stagnate, but most of the influential bands for the last 20 years or so have been from continental Europe. It makes sense, because metal (especially Black Metal) is very counterculture to all of the PC SJW shit that dominates western Europe
No.502
>>480>>485I beg to differ. While the music itself is going stronger than the 2000s, the production is rarely as good as the 90s and I find that experimentation is more rare today. Still a good era to live in for music.

>>570>>573I love Mekong Delta. Though they share the same problem as Jag Panzer for example. Shitty Covers, and a shitty bandlogo. I mean really, they suck. And to be honest, many metalheads are disgustingly into artwork, packaging etc.pp.. metal folks are collectors. Jag Panzers The Age of Mastery is so unbelievable ugly, like any cover of Mekong Delta since maybe Mekong Delta!
And often I hope Mekong Delta would go and get a thicker sound. But they nonetheless are god tier.
>>90 You are right! It is their best release. Downright perfect record. Whereas Crack the Skye was a great album it was the move into Progrock and Classic rock and therefore not as crushing which is no problem if you still rock on. But after Crack the Skye? You could throw away The Hunter and the first half of Once more 'round the sun (though i think they found themselves again)…
And honestly…mastodon suck live.

>>670Season itself is my second favourite. I also like pic related.
No.677
>>665Their first two were fast and heavy, but also meticulous and musically adept. Reign in blood the gutairwork on the solos started to get kinda sloppy. It's not a bad album, it just feels like a step down
Also it was on LeEbinGuitarVidya, so teenage normalfags love it, or at least they did five years ago when those shitty guitar hero games were popular. It doesn't detract from the album per say, as much as it gives it some undeserved popularity

>>677Still better than late Slayer shit. I mentioned Reign in Blood because I can't fucking stand the boring, hamfisted vocals of the abomination known as the World Painted Blood album. Whatever residual riffage is still there, it's weighed down by prominent vocals.
And THAT is what attracted me to black metal. Sure, there are lyrics, but the vocals serve to create atmosphere, regardless of lyrics comprehension, and are just another instrument. I've read the album booklets, and in my experience you don't even NEED to do that to get the idea of an Archgoat album, because the vocals sound so much like demonic incantations. People who don't care for the atmosphere/vibe of a song that transcends words aren't going to get a lot out of raw black metal like Bethlehem, Inpestae or Fire Throne.
