Tell us a bit about yourself. What do you listen now, what did you listen before, how did you find this music, etc. Friend told me that metal is much like drugs where you just keep looking for something heavier and stronger.

As a kid, i always loved "rock'n'roll". Even though i didn't know a single song, i'd love to listen some of the tapes my brother had. Then when i started taking guitar lessons, the guy that was teaching me mainly got me into instrumental rock, Joe Satriani and all that shizz. The band that got me into metal was Hammerfall. From there, i listened to more power metal bands, then got caught up with Wintersun thinking Jari was god.
Did listen to Iron Maiden the whole journey through. So i got tired of melodic death, so now it's Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, along with some classic rock mixed in.
What about you?

>Marilyn Manson
>Le slapknuts is the one and only true metal band
>Heard Cannibal Corpse for the first time
>All the classics and standardized decent stuff mostly, Slayer, Death, Early Cannibal Corpse, etc. Also some grind core.
>Mostly Slam and Death and Stoner
>Black metal, Drone, Sludge
>Branched out a bunch, don't listen to mainly metal at this point.

 No.3099

As far as metal goes
>I guess grunge was the launch pad for me getting into heavier
>big four and some "classic"
>crossover thrash, was in a black metal band despite hating most black metal
>grindcore, crust, hardcore
>sludge, funeral doom, drone, stoner, still listening to a lot of crust, grindcore and hardcore
>some oldschool heavy metal, but mostly non metal stuff mostly goth and post punk
>black metal

What are you, gay?

I also started out as a rawker since my dad was also into hard rockin' music. There was also some heavy and power metal music in there too. When I got a bit older I pretty much started listening to deafkore and shitty mellowdeaf thinking that it was "the real deal". However, I got better when I was 16 or so, probably because I started learning about music theory and shit which made me unable to listen to radio pap dressed up as metal. Nowadays as far as metal is concerned I like all established metal genres and I don't really favour one over the others.

BM is the worst genre out there. Prove me wrong.

What the fuck is wrong with Hammerfall? What's so great about Black Metal? I have listened to some of it, i just can't hear what everyone is playing.

Hammerfall is meh, they're not terrible, just boring

BM>>>power metal (except Blind Guardian)

Okay i tried finding different BM than the old stuff such as Mayhem, ex. Dissection. It's ok, but i guess not my slice of bread. As for power metal, yeah, most of it is shit but i find Hammerfall one of the few bands that are good. Blind Guardian too.

The first remotely hardcore bands that got me into metal were bands like Linkin Park, Evanescence, etc. Gradually, I ended up discovering melodic death metal, which was and still is one of my favourite genres. Nowadays though, Amon Amarth is one of the only melodeath bands I enjoy. Most bands I like are black metal or DSBM. Lately I have been listening to Xasthur and Forgotten Tomb.

I've never gotten into death metal for too long. The metal I enjoy generally has a good melody, rather than just bashing everywhere at once. I like imagining things while I listen to music, which tends to be medieval fantasy d&d related stuff.

>tfw amon amarth got me into norse mythology

Mediocre crap that powerfags high on their own farts enjoy.

 No.3244

Loved me some blues and rock and roll as a kid, as a teen I listened to thrash, proto-black metal, punk and stoner rock. Now I listen to some black metal, death metal, and very rarely some thrash, but the majority of my listening time has been dedicated to sludge/doom/stoner metal for a while now.

 No.3277

I started listening to metal back in middle school, mainly bands such as Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for my Valentine, and Disturbed.

In high school I listened to bands like As I lay Dying and other metalcore bands until I discovered Thrash and it completely blew that out of the water (Slayer, Sodom, Pantera [if you consider them thrash])

Now I mainly listen to Death Metal Bands like Death, Cannibal Corpse, Bolt Thrower, and a few others.

 No.3282

When I was a kid, I had this game on my computer "Jets'n'guns". The music in the game is 100% metal. I used to stay up all night playing the game just to hear the music again and again. At that time I didn't even know about the internet, my sister showed me Green Day and Linkin Park. My cousin showed me Slipknot (didn't really like it but it was br00tal to a kid like me). After some time of GD and LP, I started using the interwebs. Always listened to JNG music on Youtube and than discovered Iron Maiden, Iced Earth and Megadeath. Absolutely loved them. After that I discovered folk, than power, technical brutal and finally black metal. Today, I am a metalhead, my favorite band is Anal Mandica (croatian) and Forest stream (atmospheric black metal). Never liked any form of music except metal, ever (not counting GD and LP, I was a child back than).

 No.3311

When I was about 7 years old, my babysitter would put on music. The two albums I loved most were Led Zeppelin I and Paranoid. I remember insisting on hearing "War Pigs" and "Iron Man", and could sing the latter from memory as an 8 year old.

I heard modern metal/metalcore in middle school, but I thought it was shit compared to Sabbath, so I didn't get into any more bands until Priest, Metallica, and Ozzy & Dio's solo work when I was 15. I kinda just branched out and got into more subgenres and more obscure bands from there.

Now I listen to a shitload of 70s metal/hard rock & NWOBHM, I also listen to a lot of folk metal, power metal, oldschool death, thrash (especially the proggier stuff), and of course doom/stoner metal.

 No.3351

I used to think metal was either nu-metal Disturbed, old shit like Accept, or Death.

I didn't care much for any of that, mostly listened to classic rock on the radio, if ever.

>Kalmah

Found these fuckers in some stupid youtube video. They had some great riffs in their earlier stuff and I still like them now. First few steps into metal.
>Dragonforce
I'm very ashamed that I ever listened to them, but they did keep metal as a thing in my mind.

>Guy at work tells me all the metal he likes

He mostly liked Pantera, can't stand Phil, but I ended up picking up some Priest and Maiden songs, kinda liked them.

>Megadeth

I didn't really like Megadeth at first, but I came around to it after hearing Peace Sells. Helped me get into lots of Thrash stuff. Call me a faggot but I seriously love Metallica's first two albums.

>Suicidal Tendencies

Got into them because of their later thrash albums, and I followed them back to their punk/hardcore roots and found some other stuff I like too.

Can't say I really like Black/Death Metal, I've always preferred the extreme, hyperactive solos of other genres than anything depressive or melancholy.

 No.3353

For me, baby's first metal was middle Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet For My Valentine which showed me I didn't hate all music. That got me into some classic rock and Disturbed, and when I got into A7X's earlier stuff I got used to harsh vocals. I moved onto Killswitch Engage, Disturbed, Slipknot, As I lay Dying and Five Finger Death Punch. From here, I got into less mainstream metal. (no I'm not a hipster, but most everything after this would never be played on the radio)
I started listening to All That Remains, and Children of Bodom. Children of Bodom was what really got me into darker and heavier music. From there, I started listening to Eluviettie, Parasite Inc., Turmion Kätilöt, and The Agonist
I'm mostly into the heavier bands, but I'll always have a soft spot for Nightwish.

When I was a kid, my mom played nothing but Pink Floyd on our car rides, of which there were many. So I guess I started there. When I was a young teen, like 10-12, I was into punk rock and ska, basically whatever the punk-o-rama and other, similar, CD's would put out. I remember Operation Ivy being a personal favorite. In late middle school and early high school, I was into KMFDM, Wumpscut, Skinny Puppy, and other such bands, alongside other things, like (old-style) Electro, Synthpop, and Italo Disco.

I went into a House and Trance phase in the military, crossing into things like Shibuya Kei and J-Tek, as well, mostly in a feeble attempt to offset the obvious internal issues associated with being in the military. When I got out, I went towards electro, space disco, and of course, dubstep, because that was the popular shit at the time. I was mostly an electrofag, though.

I did, however, take a particular interest in shoegaze. My musical tastes waxed and waned quite a bit, at some point, I realized that other countries had Youtube too, so I got into Russian, Ecuadorian/Colombian, North Korean, Iranian, and Palestinian music. That "phase" still hasn't really ended.

My interest in metal came mostly from an interest in Thrash. I'd listened to the Painkiller album in the military, and I'd listened to some Dragonforce back in High School, along with a couple of various prog-rock bands, and Mars Volta, and of course, the aforementioned industrial stuff.

My first introduction to Black Metal came during my first winter in Romania. I'd started drinking a lot, and I think somebody posted some atmospheric stuff on a chan that I was browsing. Between the drunkenness, the general depression, and the unrelenting snow, I fell in love with atmospheric black metal. I've stuck with it, and although I don't listen to it every day, I probably do have more AtmoBM CD's at this point, than any other genre. I download a lot of singles off Youtube, but when it comes to full CD's, AtmoBM is most of what I end up downloading.

I'd like to add, by the way, that most of my BM ended up just being whatever was most recent on the AtmoBM channel on Youtube, or whatever was most recent on MortuusInSomnis. Sometimes I'd just go on soulseek's BM room, pick a random person, and just download random CDs from them, and listen to those. I still don't have any real understanding of what the AtmoBM 'classics' are. Half the time, I don't even know who I'm listening to.

My Romanian winter involved a lot of depression, a lot of cheap wine and liquor, a lot of not going to work, and a shit-ton of AtmoBM.

I grew up on a steady diet of Hip-Hop and R&B (what a combo), but on occasion, I'd listen to some Alt. Rock or Grunge (born in '88). Bell Biv DeVoe, Machines of Loving Grace and a few other things I can't recall. I never developed a taste for music until much later.

At age 12, I rented Detroit Rock City and loved it, so I then bought the soundtrack which featured Van Halen, Kiss, Pantera, David Bowie and, most importantly, Black Sabbath. The song "Iron Man" left such a strong impression. From that point up to about 15, I started listening to game soundtracks with licensed music (Revolution X, Way of the Warrior, Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage, Twisted Metal 4, BMX XXX, et cetera). Rap, Nu-Metal and more generic Alt. Rock. I even got into The Cure courtesy of South Park. Other favorites from that time: Korn, NWA, Dr. Dre, RBX, Cypress Hill, One Minute Silence, Green Jelly, Aerosmith, Metallica, White Zombie, Rob Zombie. I was one confused kid.

The first album I bought was Blue Oyster Cult's "Some Enchanted Evening," where "Godzilla" and "Don't Fear the Reaper" became classics. After reading about Punk in some encyclopedia, I then went out and bought "Never Mind the Bollocks" by The Sex Pistols, which got me into Punk for a short period of time. At 15, Slipknot and Slayer made their way into my CD player, and my taste for the extreme grew. I then purchased "Piece of Mind" by Iron Maiden and I listened to it until it got scratched to shit. At the time, I was less than careful with the CDs I owned.

Of all things, I stumbled upon a White Power website while googling Rap lyrics. At the time, I considered myself anti-racist (all kids did to please the adults), so I quickly left. Then I revisited the site and discovered RAC. From there on, I actively sought out White Power bands and started listening to crappy mp3s, but while the songs sucked, I read interviews with the bands and wanted to seek out the music that inspired them. I can thank Grinded Nig for helping me discover better Death Metal bands.

>Dad used to play a lot of "dark rock" (didn't find a better suited name) in the car, such as Nirvana, The Cure, Some Marilyn Manson, Interpol, System of a Down, Deftones, and the list goes on.

>I was really into Rammstein when I was 12/13 yo, got a friend who loved them (He know listens to things like A7X, KsE or BVB. Such a waste of potential.)

>At this period my dad also liked Rammstein so we listened to it almost everyday in he car, but sister got bored, so we went back to System of a Down, Nirvana, Sum 41's "Chuck"and *sigh* Indochine (she still love that crap).

>Went to High School, loosed my "nu-metalhead" friend. Started searching for bands like Rammstein (More Neue Deutsche Härte), found Eisbrecher, Heldmaschine, Old-Megaherz, Oomph! …(I still wonder how did I manage not to get into Slipknot at this time)

>Latter I found Reddit's /r/metal/, some French Metal Podcasts on YouTube (Metalliquoi, Reset Metal and 2guys1tv if you want to know. 2guys1tv is the best. I also like Infidelamsterdam). Started to got into mainstream bands (mainly Sabbath, Priest, and a shitload of other things lie Paradise Lot)

>Didn't like very much Death Metal (I already liked Black), but it interested me was so I listened to this genre all the summer and ended up liking it, pretty much because of Bolt Thrower. I ink I misundertood the way to appreciate the genre at start, but then found it.

>Found halfchan then 8ch, then recently endchan, which has the same metal community as 8ch…

Pretty comfy place, slow but it's like a lil home where we can discuss metal without being disturbed.

I still like Neue Deutsche Härte, the mix of nostalgia and spooky/dark synth melodies kind of calm me down when I re-listen to it. Rammstein and System of a Down may be the only bands that I think are/were great at what they do.

 No.5986

I never really listened to much music (besides the odd classical, or rap), until I found Disturbed.

I then got into Linkin Park, papa Roach, and Korn. I really found that the "general metal feel" in music spoke to me.

After a month while I got into arch enemy, rammstein, various deathcore, and slayer, I exposed myself to more heavier genres.

I went from that nu/alt metal to the extreme satanic black, brutal detah, slam, djent, grindcore of all kinds, and the more extreme genres.

Now THE LIGHTEST stuff I listen to are deathcore, melo death, thrash, and doom.

Also I always had a thing for soundtracks like Old School Runescape, Natural Selection 2, and Subnautica.
