Recommendation thread! Describe what kind of music you want, name a few bands and I (and hopefully some others) will try to name bands that fit your description.
I'll start…
Death/thrash/black bands with a crazy, high pitched, out of control screech. I don't want the typical bm thing either, more fucked up.
No.3824
Are you into any DSBM? They have that really shrieky, crying vocal style a lot of the time.
Gris is probably my favorite DSBM band but Ghost Bath's most recent release is fucking killer.
Can anyone recommend me some extreme metal that makes really heavy use of choirs and symphonies? I already know about the more well known stuff like Fleshgod Apocalypse, Carach Angren, and Septic Flesh.
No.3827
Dirty fucking unholy fusion of sludge and doom/death/black/hardcore and whatever. Just generally unbearably filthy stuff.
eg.:
Dragged Into Sunlight - Widowmaker
Lord Mantis - Pervertor
Hierophant - Peste
Coffinworm - IV.I.VIII
Wyrdforge - Her Wings Unfold War
Doctor Livingstone - Contemptus Saeculi

>>3824Thanks, Gris was pretty good. The atmosphere was too sad for me though, I prefer to feel hatred, but I guess that's what DSBM is all about. Maybe it will grow on me.
Sorry, I don't know anything about heavy choirs or symphonies.
>>3826That's intense. Too fast for me though. Thanks.
>>3827No sludge here but check out Mion's Hill from Norway. Maybe you'll like it, maybe not.

Super fast grindcore/death metal that will make me wanna beat the shit out of someone.

I don't know anything about this kind of music but I'm looking for bands like Electric Wizard but with dirtier vocals. Not necessarily death growls though.

Looking for some sludge, death, or black metal bands. It'd be badass if anyone can recommend me hybrids of the 3.

Death metal with industrial tinges in the vein of Godflesh and early Swans.

Looking for black metal simmilar to Judas Iscariot. Something atmospheric and dark. And preferably without lyrics pertaining to national socialism or paganism, because for some reason, that shit annoys the fuck out of me. Judas Iscariot, for reference.

I'm looking for some heavily symphonic metal with a lot of oriental stuff in it. Basically I want another Time 1 by Wintersun. I'm trying to write this kind of stuff, but only having Wintersun to listen to for inspiration is making it a bit of a challenge to not just blatantly copy them.

Seraphim is good, but lacks the asian sounds I'm looking for. I'm looking more for traditional asian music mixed with metal.
And Canon in D sounds great in that song.
No.4321

Chthonic is the only thing that springs to mind, their not really symphonic though.
No.4327
I have nothing to offer. Feed me recs anyway.
I need FAST thrash metal of a progressive and/or virtuosic nature, think Mekong Delta, Coroner.
Bonus twist: No vocals.
As an aside, yeah, anything instrumental-only that isn't math/postrock fuckery would work too. Don't care if it's compilations or solo guitarists, borderline jazz or fucking touhou music or anything, quantity>>>>quality for my needs in that area.

I'd like some melodeath in the vein of At the Gates' The Red in the Sky is Ours, Sentenced's North from Here and Cenotaph's Riding Our Black Oceans. Basically melodeath with the usual beautiful harmonics, but with added on technical savagery. Bands like Intestine Baalism are fine as well.
Posting a song from each band for reference.

Any black metal recommendations for someone who already considers themselves a fan of the genre? Should I finally get around to listening to Watain? I've heard mixed things about them, but I haven't decided if they're worth the listen.

I enjoy Watain. Give them a listen. Since there are many bands with many albums, I will do two lists. One will be older bands who have been around / were around in the 80's and 90's scene, and the other will be more modern bands.
Older
>Venom (Just listen to the Black Metal album if you don't want to listen to their whole discography)
>Bathory
>Mayhem (only the first album is really any good imo)
>Immortal
>Darkthrone (Only their early stuff is black metal, but everything they have released is enjoyable)
>Ulver's first album
>Emperor
>Burzum
>Dark Funeral
>Gorgoroth
>Dimmu Borgir
This should get you started. There are other big name bands and albums, but you should be able to find out about those quite easily after you listen to what I have listed.
Newer
These bands that can help introduce you to the modern scene of black metal which is different from black metal of the 90's. The modern scene has more bands in the symphonic, depressive suicidal, atmospheric, ambient, and folk black metal subgenres. You can still find some bands that have that early 90's raw and aggressive sound if want to though.
>Carach Angren
>Caladan Brood
>Thy Light
>Austere
>Krallice
>Saor
>Woods of Desolation
>Elderwind
>Lustre
>Drudkh
This should be a sufficient start for you to get into the new black metal scene. If you want more bands or bands in a specific subgenre just ask.

Thanks for the recommendations, though I think you might of missed where I said that I already considered myself a fan of the genre.
What I'd really like to find is some bands that have the same sort of aesthetics that early black metal bands did (classic Darkthrone and Mayhem, Immortal, etc), but is still going strong. Really the only band like that that I can think of is Inquisition.
I'd like to find a band similar to Judas Iscariot. The closest thing I can think of is Burzum, but I can't get into them because of the lyrics mostly not in English, plus the fact that Varg lets his personal politics and beliefs (which I disagree with) bleed over into his music quite a bit.
No.4442
>>4441
I'm also interested to find bands like you stated. However, I think you should try to give Burzum a shot. Don't involve politics in everything you do dude. You'll enjoy the world a lot more. Varg chose not to involve it in his lyrics so I think his music stands separate from that. I'm not saying you have to fund him (I've bought his records but only because I like physical copies) you can download them.
As for the Norwegian lyrics. I tend to view his tortured screams as an instrument itself. You don't know right away what he's saying but you know he sounds desperate and passionate about it. almost like he knew his life was going downhill. Plus if you read the English translation, some of his lyrics are quite… Poetic.

Stop being a faggot. He doesn't have any racist lyrics or whatever. Tell your trend-hopper friends who lied to you about that that they should perish. In fact there are a lot of bands whose members are racist, but whose lyrics don't reflect that. You have Graveland for example, Rob "I've Got Enough LARPing Gear to Reenact the Battle of Helm's Deep" Fudali does hold prejudiced views, but the most "prejudiced" lyrics you'll find in Graveland are about murdering Christians.
Bottom line, if you want a "safe space" genre where you can avoid any music just because you disagree with someone then metal is not for you. Richard Wagner was allegedly anti-Semitic, but that doesn't change the value of his music.

The thing is, I'm not even a very political person. But you're right, I shouldn't let an artist's personal life keep me from enjoying their music.

Sorry if I came off as a bit too aggressive, but that's how things go here, the spirit of metal is created to challenge the norm.
Black metal's views were created to outrage the morals of the day. Nowadays Satanism isn't as shocking as it was in the 90s and since the leading narrative in Western media is all that leftist tripe, the nationalism of BM stuck. This is why you see a lot of newer bands having openly nationalist members, despite the fact that their lyrics may not even deal with that.

I need some recommendations for Doom metal with Hard/Blues/Prog rock influences (or vise versa). Bands along these lines I have already listened to are Cirith Ungol, Ogre, early Danzig, and Ghost.
