I don't think they were ever really good, Slayer is the only big 4 band of any worth, mainly because of Hell Awaits and to a lesser extent Show no Mercy.

The musicianship is far better than anything Metallica, exodus and anthrax were doing and They have slayer beat too on most things. Only thing I can see as a turn off is Dave's vocals.

Unrelated but damn, Death and Megadeth Both went through a ton of lineup changes. Also both incorporated jazz drumming and guitar licks.
