That's the key difference between zines and "publications". One is produced by fans and the other is filled with journalists. Distance between writer and subject may be good journalism ethics with regards to politics (see: Gamergate), but on music and other forms of art and entertainment, it usually means stripping the writer of his candor. Even the shoddiest zine has more character than " respectable " outlets. Metal is music by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. Distance only compromises the content, especially if the zinester has his own band. Zines are the closest thing to primary sources the underground has for commentary.

The Creativity Movement propaganda got dull as did his reports on WP concerts, but the interviews were worthy.
