This album came out February 13, 1970. That was over 45 years ago. Many people agree that this album is the very first metal album. The 70's and 80's were when metal peaked in popularity, but that does not mean that it did not stay popular. It just went more underground. Metal seems to be going strong with little sign of dying off. Yet more and more of the original metal musicians are dying and it brings into question how long our beloved music genre will continue on. I personally believe that if metal ever dies it will be many many decades from now. I have no doubt in my mind that metal will live to see a century of existence and more. It will change and more subgenres will be created, but it will always be metal. I believe metal will essentially be a more underground version of classical music in the sense that people will still be listening to old songs and appreciating the talent behind them.

Metal seems like the type of genre that will probably never die in the near future and if it ever dies out it will probably be because it evolves into a completely different genre with a similar aesthetic and aim, rather than dying out due to a lack of interest.

That said, metal is a very tradition-oriented genre so people are probably going to be listening to the same old Death, Atheist, Cynic, Darkthrone, Burzum, and Mayhem a few decades from now just because of how revered and important they are.

This is an important reason for why I think metal will never truly die. Metal is not just music, it is an entire culture.

A century of metal is only 55 years away. I think we can last that long before killing each other to the point of either extinction of destroying the planet to the point that human life (or any life) can safely exist.
