I used to discard it as being "okay" when I was a teen, I always went for thrash and death metal. I even went through a brutal death metal phase that was brief (thank god).
When I was a teen, I also listened to black metal but it was limited, I only liked shit that was similar to death or thrash metal. I liked Absu's work and especially anything to do with black thrash, I ate that shit up.
I only woke up to black metal in my mid 20's, it's pretty strange that it took me so long to realize its beauty. I don't think I truly understood it when I was younger, maybe it's because I expected something more.
I am of course talking about early second wave BM and the minimalist tremolo melodies that lead you into an almost classical feeling of a symphony, with beautiful artistic structure that takes you into a whole new world and progressively turns those riffs into a story and makes them something important.
I wish I would have appreciated it earlier to be honest. Maybe it was just the lack of production that held me back.
Anyways, do you like or dislike black metal? Reasons?
what are your favorite albums? etc…
