A concern was brought up to me today by an anon who was worried about samefagging in certain threads on the board. He argued that enabling IDs would let people spot out samefags who are trying to push a certain opinion or product. The problem with this, however, is how easy it is to change IPs or use proxies/VPNs, and the fact that anyone dedicated enough would just do that anyway.
I wouldn't dare to decide on this sort of thing without popular vote and discussion beforehand. What's your take, /tech/?

Shills have been shitting up important discussions.
Its time we have ids.

I say yes, if only to stop faggot from accusing others of same fagging and shilling.
You still keep anonymity once the thread dies.

Sounds like a good idea. /tech/ has been being stormed over by certain groups of individuals shitposting en masse, as if bumping us ahead of the gg board will do anything at all.
/pol/ leaks, as usual.
Also makes it so I don't have to wear a trip to keep in-thread projects coherent.

Sure, I say yes, I make it a point to not samefag anyhow
But I must warn y'all, /tech/s PPH may significantly drop do to the drop of samefags

/pol/ is annoying, but how would this help at all? They just want to raise the UID count, they're not likely to samefag.

How does thread-wise ids break anonymity at all? This argument makes no sense.

So ass-mad about net neutrality. Why not post in the thread with some FACTS!? This whining for IDs is bullshit. I post often but if you go IDs I'll just IP hop anyway, so fuck you buddy.

If you don't see any problem in posting this much on the same side of the topic, why do you feel people can't know how many of the posts are from the same person?
f5c056 No.619
Even if you take the stance that samefagging is somehow a serious problem that must be stopped and everything in the world will explode if it isn't. IDs don't do anything to stop it anyway.

Because they really stopped that on /pol/ and /v/!

I post in one thread, and thus feel no sympathy for your position. Consider the pedo thread on /b/. Keep it to one thread, everybody else get over it.
> why do you feel people can't know how many of the posts are from the same person?
Jesus Christ. Ok, so let me address this from two perspectives. First, anyone with half a mind can recognize the writing style and attitude of a single poster, so I don't feel that is impossible. The second perspective I think addresses your sense of justice. "How dare you feel that you can deny others the knowledge of samefagging". Well, I will hop IP addresses so that I can further my argument and have whole conversations with myself. Today I don't do that but if IDs are added it will be enough of a hassle to aviod being called a samefag for my "excessive" posting that yes, I will put in this much effort, in for a penny in for a pound, and its your worst nightmare: 300 plus unique IPs all in support of my position. Think about it before you go thermonuclear because I'm actually willing to press the button.

I think that IDs are annoying, and dedicated samefags/shitposters/shills can easily just hop on a proxy/VPN

I have some more thoughts to share:
1. Your opinions should be based off a careful consideration of the facts and not peer pressure. This point alone says that anyone advocating for IDs isn't educated enough to have an opinion worth listening to.
2. Let me address this also like I did in the Net Neutrality Thread #2 when an anon was screaming for the mod to shut it down: If you cannot bully one anon who keeps his opinion contained to a single thread then you should quit the chan lifestyle because you belong in a safe space like Reddit.
000000 No.636
Does anyone have evidence of actual shilling going on here? Not to say it doesn't happen on /v/ or /pol/, but this isn't /g/ - the catalog isn't covered with Apple, MS, smartphone and headphone shilling.

Somebody went off and made a /tech2/ hoping to keep shitposters and shills down.
It has one post.
9fdf9c No.638
People should be educated on not responding to shills, trolls, shitposters and the lot.
It is very unlikely to get everyone to understand these facts and IDs are a workaround for this. Responding to obvious bait with earnest makes the legitimacy of your post suspect.
If you let people shitpost and be unwittingly pulled in to a fight, then the quality of the board as a whole decreases once everyone starts arguing, unless stricter moderation is in place.
There is no real harm that IDs cause.
Yes. I am in favor.

No. Anon or get out of 8chan, reddit scum.
47f496 No.640
Anonymity allows us to avoid witch hunts. Right now, even in a thread, if you keep responses to different discussions in different posts, no one can know that you who has technical opinion Y supports controversial opinion X, so they can't say "you're an idiot, so Y is not true, becuase you hold unrelated opinion X". It would devolve into reddit-tier circlejerking.

Shills often can't defend their points so I'm from the opinion that any argument that arbitrary defines something as good or bad without justification should be simply ignored.
If you want to pass judgment on something, you should provide reasons, sources, anything to validate your point.
So, if you, moderator, want to active the IDs, I don't see any problem. We're aware that it can be bypassed, especially by /tech/'s users, it'll help to show the dumb posters, but I don't see it solving big problems. Also, it's worth mentioning that TOR's users will always have IDs of zeroes, TOR is piss easy to use now thanks to the TOR browser, so you may expect lots of TOR users and you can't simply ban all of them cause there are legit poster from TOR.
776773 No.646
Meh I don't really care, the shills are obvious enough that I can simply ignore em.
And the mikey whats his name spam I have filtered just by adding "young girls" to my filter.

Shills can eventually turn the tide of public opinion, though, and that's a problem. I, for one, am not content being part of some special snowflake secret club. I want everyone to have the same freedoms that I enjoy, but for that to be an educated opinion of their own, not something that I forced on them. Shills intrinsically cause a problem in this area.

If a "cuck" uses a proxy then you made the perceived problem worse, so sorry but you won't be successful here.
As far as the little whiners are concerned, the net neutrality threads piss of casuals so in this regard they are a valuable public service. Hell, we should just make the thread stickied and cycled, how about them apples? Seriously though, let them suffer. Every night when they turn out the light and start to sleep they can be haunted by the thought that they disagreed with facts and that it must have been one anon, yes, if only it was a samefag then their fragile egos would be sparred from utter ruin. After all, how could they be wrong to call others a solitary shill when they were presented with facts that they didn't like!?
