So /mgs/, what got you into Metal Gear?

For me, it was Raiden's cyborg ass in a MGR trailer

 No.37

 No.40

I only got into MGS last year. A friend let me borrow MGS4. I was able to follow along pretty easily at least with that game's contained plot and used MGS wiki to fill in the gaps. Intrigued, it set me off to go through the rest of the series piece by piece.

 No.41

I've seen it for a while since around 2006 or something but I got into around 2013 but I was off-put because I thought it was to complex (SoL and GotP) but right now it's my favorite series.

 No.42

My roommate has a PS3. I decided to plunge into the abyss with the HD collection and MGS4, Currently on 4.

Don't worry, that's how I started getting into it too.

I actually bought MGS HD Collection and started playing through that, then bought Ground CIPHERes today.

I don't really like MGS2: SoL so far. MGS3: SE and MGS5: GZ seem to be the best out of what I've seen so far.

Can someone give me a summary of what has happened so far between 1 and 5? I'm kind of confused.

>I would turn on the psx
>boot up metal gear solid
>and hand the controller to my dad
>just watched him play MGS and listened to the story and plot shit
and that's how I started. I got really into it and here we are.
I really fucking hate my father now though so I have kinda repressed those memories of spending time with him. I see it as more I was using him to play out a movie rather than actually caring about him playing the game

Oldfag here, I started playing MGS in '98 on the original Playstation. Graphics were shit and gameplay not best, but still a classic, story awesome though. Good for it's time. Didn't really get into it until the release of MGS3: Snake Eater in '04. Raiden was a little bitch in MGS2. I suggest you play the first 2 Metal Gear games, Metal Gear (late 80's) and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake (1990) on an MSX emulator. Metal Gear 2 was also re-released in MGS3 Subsistence I really want to play MGS5 and want to replay MGS4 , but don't have the time to.

 No.76

I decided to look for good rated games on IGN MGS4 was one of the perfect games on there so I decided to give it a shot.
I finished the first two acts and got confused as hell on what the fuck is going on so I started playing the first one on emulation but gave up after a few days because of mei ling not saving my game and being forced to use those forced emulation saves which made me feel bad for cheating. I saw the HD collection on the PSN while browsing idly and bought it, I opened a UK account and bought MGS1 too. I played through all the games in around a week time and I don't regret a single second.

What got me into Metal Gear Solid?
I was younger and was sitting around my aunt's house. I went into my nephew's room to see if there was anything to do. Sitting there he was playing Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. He allowed to me to play a little bit and we were down there around the time for Christmas and he ended up giving me the game as a early present. The next case of me getting into Metal Gear was when I went to a friend of mine's house and he was playing Metal Gear. I asked him what was he doing, he was near the torture scene. We watched the cutscene and I was just amazed. Then we were stuck, we couldn't figure out what to get out. So we went into the "Survival Viewer" and spun him around because we were bored. When we exited he puked and we got out. We beat the game after that within a week, now I make it a goal to beat Metal Gear Solid 3 every single day to improve on my knowledge and how fast I can beat it. Hope anybody has a story just like mine. If you got this far, thanks for listening /mgs/.

 No.116

i bought mgs2 off a friend when i was 14 just because the cover looked cool, ended up being amazed by the visuals and the concept of having to sneak around but I understood bummer all of the story since my english was very poor, once i inproved on that front i replayed it and then went out of my way to get the other games and understand the full picture. Mgs3 hooked me up for good.

>be 6 year old me
>heard my older brother and his friend talk about mgs for the 1st time in my life
>watch friend play the game
>fastforward a few months, my brother got the game
>he would get killed all the time
>all the fucking time
>and he would hit anything close to him every time he got killed (me, most of the times)
>he couldn't even make it to the fucking part where you fight Ocelot for a lot of fucking time
>tfw he would never let me play the game. I bet I could have finished the game months sooner than he did, but he wouldn't even let me try it.

After that, we got almost every MGS game for both of us, and I was always be the one who would play a million times more than he will ever do. Not to mention I know everything a whole lot deeper than he does.

 No.126

>>125
I still wonder why he would keep playing, if he was so fucking pissed all the time about losing. Also, he never tried to play in stealth mode, he always got caught trying to beat enemies or trying new weapons.

 No.129

Pizza Hut demo disc, mofucka. Japanese VO and ended when you entered the vent. I think it was on the same disc as SSX and CTR. I may have had two discs. Anyway, the game just grabbed me, and once I borrowed the full game from the neighbor kid, I knew it would never let me go.

I was 10 years old, kek

I fucking hate MGS4

 No.131

I was digging through the family's PS1 Collection in '09 (I had my games at the time and my Dad had his, always separated from each other), and I found the Playstation Underground disc with the MGS Demo in my Dad's stash. I popped it in and I pretty much immediately ordered the full game from ebay after that.
I played through the entire series almost spoiler-free. Got pissed off at Raiden being the protagonist and everything. Possibly my favorite series ever.

 No.133

My bf was playing the first game about a year or so ago and I couldn't stop watching. I ended up watching him play 1-3. We went out a few months ago and bought the legacy collection so I've been playing them recently.
I remember watching scenes from it on youtube when I was about 10, and my cousin would come to my house all the time and let me watch him play different games, so I watched him play it back then.

But I had forgotten about all that until my boyfriend played it…

 No.147

A friend gave me mgs 3 subsistence for PS2 and I never gave it back.

 No.148

Back around 2007-08 i got my cousin's ps3 and it had metal gear solid 4 and i fell in love with the series and wanted to play the first one after playing the part on Shadow Moses from metal gear solid one so I bought mgs1 and 2 from a friend who was clearing out his old games

I honestly can't remember. I had heard about how cool MGS1 was for a while, despite being like, 12. I somehow got my hands on MGS:TTS, but I never beat it. I think I got stuck on Sniper Wolf (also I was bad at stealth games). I beat it eventually, but years later.

Eventually I got my hands on a PS2 along with MGS2 and MGS3. Once again, never beat MGS2. I had no idea what was going on and I was even worse at it than TTS. I also beat it eventually, years later.

MGS3, however, I loved and played all the way until the Shagohod fight. Right after I defeated the Shagohod, when Snake and EVA speed off on the bike again, the game crashed. My disc couldn't load that part. I went out and bought another copy. It couldn't load either. I bought ANOTHER copy. It ALSO couldn't load either.

I gave up on the MGS series for a long time after that. It wasn't until the HD Collection that I got back into it and finally beat MGS3. I also fell in love with Peace Walker.

So yeah I've been playing them since 2003-ish but I didn't really become an invested fan until 2012.

 No.286

I got a demo disc from Pizza Hut that had MGS1 on it.

 No.297

I remember when I was like 6 or 7, I watched and older kid play MGS1 and thought it was really cool, but it wasn't until I was 12 or 13 when I got into it. By then MGS2 and MGS3 had been out for a while, and I quickly played through both those games. I kept replaying them over and over again, I was hooked. When MGS4 came out I HAD to buy a PS3 even though it had basically nogames. It wasn't until I was 16 that I actually got to play MGS1, but when I finally did, I felt like everything came full circle.

 No.351

>April 2011
>my last carefree summer vacation (indiafag here) since in the following months I would need to study a lot for my IGCSE finals in november
>think I'll play a lot on my new PS3 this summer
>PSN hacked
>Can't play the online games I wanted to.
>No single player games to play
>Go a bit mad
>Remember how MGS4 was praised as one of the best games on the PS3
>Get interested in it
>Can't play the other games since not all are present on the PS3
>Decide to read up the stories of all the games on wiki
>Was long and quite convoluted but I thought it would be worth it
>Got to nearby game shop
>MGS4 isn't there
>get super pissed since it meant all that work for nothing
>Buy GTA4 instead, was satisfied with it
>Fast forward few months
>E3 2011
>MGS HD C ollection announced
>Get hyped since I can finally play it but then realzie that I spoiled a lot of it already for myself
>Bittersweet emotions
>Fast forward december 2011
>IGCSE done, play MGS1 on PC and get the HD collection and then MGS4.

By the end of it I was absolutely mesmerized and never believed such awesomeness existed in this world. When playing it I seemed to have forgotten most of the spoilers but the ending if MGS3 was still clear in my mind so that would be the only thing I regret.

I played it with the original voices and I debated with a lot of people about MGS1 with spanish voice actors. Makes me cringe every time that people say they prefer the spanish version. It's a pile of shit compared to the original voices.

 No.594

Those voices where top-notch. Also, it helped A LOT to pay attention to such a story-driven game for me. Vidya back never had those many cutscenes and conversations.

Also, when I bought the MGS Legacy, I made sure to download the english version.
Gotta love Hayter's voice

 No.604

Little me, glares at brother playing MGS.
I remembered him telling me the lore of it, even if he was high as shit, he still explained it fine to me.
I tried playing it but never got very far. The PS2 was already out but we were too poor to get one until my brother got a job. He got MGS 3 since he heard that it was about Big Boss and whatnot. Again, I never knew what to do but that mini game with the monkey was my life. Everyday after school, I'd play that shit.
Then, a few years ago, the HD collection of X360 came out and played 2-3. PW never came with it sadly since it was a digital copy of the collection. Until today, I stay up with the lore and news about MGS V. I watched the E3 trailers several times and fell in love with the music. Then I saw that /mgs/ was a featured board. And now I'm here. I still need to play PW and PO (is Portable Ops even canon or important to the plot?)

Back in 2008, I bought Ghost Recon Warfighter 1 & 2, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and MGS4 because a friend of mine recommended to me after hearing about my operator dreams. I've always been a great fan of guns, war history and everything pretty much related to it, so I figured why not?

While GRAW still remains one of my favorite tactical shooters of all time, MGS4 definitely took the fucking cake. To the point where I went out and read the lore (I couldn't get a PS2 nor any of the old games, so I had to make due.) and replayed MGS4 once in a while for years, up until Ground Zeroes came out. It; along with GRAW, SW: Republic Commando,/k/, countless war movies and documentaries, inspired me so much during my teenage years, that I made the decision to join ROTC and apply for Army Special Forces once I'm fit enough to do it, starting after my first year of college.

MGSV looks like it's going to be another one of these pivotal games that will inspire me once more to pursue this.

 No.1285

>>1282
Apparently he got it from afghan rebels in the russian invasion of afghanistan, where he was known for his sadist torturing techniques.

It's afghan pidgin for 'Sharashka', which is a special type of Gulag (russian forced labor prison) for scientists, which were forced to develop R&D for soviet russia. The term itself is originally russian slang for a badly organised company or organisation.

I assume it was lazy research on the development team side and was intended to mean 'prison' or 'labor camp' in general instead of that very specific term. At least it is falsely translated as 'prison' in an official character sheet for Ocelot.
