 No.391

Hello, newfag here. I have never played a Metal Gear Game, and want to get started. I saw some gameplay footage of MGS5 and I got hooked. I currently have a PC and am getting the n3dsxl soon. Im not a moralfag and have no problem with emulators or torrents. (i have dolphin rn). What should i do?

 No.392

Play them all in release order.
Emulate Metal gear 1 and Metal gear 2 on an MSX2 emulator

If you don't want to play these two games, then you can read the story of the games in MGS1.
Play Metal gear solid 1 on a Playstation emulator
Play MGS2: Substance and MGS3: Subsistence on a playstation emulator
You can watch a playthrough of MGS4 (since it's PS3 exclusive) if you want to since it's at the end of the chronology.
Play MGS: Peace walker on a PSP emulator

Then get MGS: Ground zeroes on steam (or pirate it if you want, it's a demo not a game).

You're set for MGS5!

Bonus: If you want, you can play MGS: Portable OPs on a PSP emulator after playing MGS3 but it isn't important as Kojima didn't direct it and its basically considered semi-canon.
You can play the spin off game: Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance on PC on steam (buy this, at least on sale, Platinum deserves your money). This is set after MGS4 so play it after watching MGS4.

 No.393

>buy/pirate MGS 1 and 2 for PC
>watch the cutscene movie of MGS4 on youtube
>emulate MGS 3 with PCSX2 emulator or just watch the cutscene movie on youtube
>emulate Peace Walker
>buy/pirate Ground Zeroes
>buy/pirate Metal Gear Rising

Or you know, just buy a PS3 and the Legacy Collection.

I was confused, because of the whole demo thing. will the missions in ground zero be in phantom pain?

 No.395

>>394
No, but they might be visitable in TPP if you have bought GZ.

It's pretty much a prologue to TPP plus extra missions on the same map. Prisoners rescued in GZ will carry over to your motherbase staff in TPP too and there will probably be other bonuses for buyers of GZ. It takes like 30 hours to get 100% on GZ but it is really not worth it if you just want to play the story mission and ignore the other stuff.

Different newfag: PS3 HD Collection or picking up the original releases? Is there anything wrong with the HD Collection?

 No.426

>>425
The HD Collection is fine, the MGS2 and MGS3 ports are actually the updated Substance and Subsistence versions, so you're actually getting more than the original Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater games. They did, however, remove some extras, such as the skateboarding game in MGS2 and Snake vs. Monkey in MGS3, but like I said, these are non-essential additions. The HD collection also includes Metal Gear 1 and 2, so that's nifty.

 No.427

>>426
They removed the secret theater too.

 No.429

>>425
You should buy the legacy collection. It's the best bang for the buck.

I forgot that the HD Collection and the Legacy Collection were two separate things. I was thinking about the Legacy Collection but it would be cheaper to buy the HD Collection and MGS1 separately. Honestly not sure if I want to play MGS4. I can emulate the two Metal Gear games.

>>426
>>427
That's a shame. I'm not too fussed about the MGS3 cuts but I kind of want the skate boarding mini-game. I'll see if I can emulate it or buy the PS2 version if I like the game enough.

Thanks for the advice and information.

 No.620

>>425
Get the Legacy Collection (New, not used because MGS1 and VR Missions are digital) if you can find it for a fair price. If not, the HD collection is fine, MGS1 and MGS4 are cheap enough separately.
>>502
MG1 and MG2 are with MGS3, so you get them regardless. Don't skip MGS4, it's a great game.

>MG1 and MG2 are with MGS3, so you get them regardless.
In the HD Collection? Neat.

 No.623

>>621
I think they were included in the original rerelease of MGS3 for PS2; Subsistence. Don't remember for sure, though. Either way it's in both the HD Collection and the Legacy.

 No.625

>>623
Brilliant. I'd rather do that than emulate.

Also

>Don't skip MGS4, it's a great game.
I was put off by the amount of cutscenes but somebody posted a list of gameplay to cutscene ratio for MGS. I didn't realise the amount of gameplay and it's not expensive so I'll give it go.

> I'd rather do that than emulate.
Yeah, the games are all pretty shitty to emulate. The only exceptions are Peace Walker and Portable OPs.
