There seems to be a big divide on ths topic in the past year, so let's get a Net Neutrality discussion thread going.

What is your opinion on the whole debate? How much control do you believe Governments and/or Corporations should have on the internet? What should and should not be illegal?

Governments are in a very peculiar situation when it comes to control over the internet though they can seize servers and domains. They could never seize and control information of any kind once its in the open. Though government is big and powerful they're still an reactionary force they prevent very little. On the topic of how much control the should have over the internet absolutely zero. Why you may ask, because the US gov't is completely off the rails with the stripping of civil rights and constitutional right. The internet is the last bastion of freedom. To think the internet hasn't been in there sights, did already we forget about SOPA so quickly. Thats why net neutrality is an imperative to be passed. Also themagicschoolbus.com or whosfuckingyou.net should have the same EXACT connection priority as msnbc or the cdc. What should be legal online EVERY FUCKING THING plain and simple you dont like dont click. Its moronic to make something illegal online in one place that can be accessed all over the world.

My ideal internet would be an internet where you are not being monitored by the government and corporations through backdoors, cookies, etc. It would be one where ISP's and general corporations have no control of what you can and cannot see. All legal jurisdiction should depend on what country your site is hosted on, and where you live. There should be no fast lanes at all. I also think that government owned ISPs treated as utilities are bullshit and cripple competition. I also wish giants like Comcast and Time Warner would split up from antitrust corruption, and while I'm not fond of google, I'm glad they are scaring these ISP's into improving their internet.

Like Teddy Roosevelt did to numerous trusts during his presidency, dissolving monopolistic corporate giants, hopefully the government might take action against bullshit like the Cockcast-TWC merge. There's so little competition in the ISP industry already. Unfortunately, for some people, they only have one option for an ISP. They don't like it? Too bad. Honestly, ISPs are some of the most disgusting people alive, especially Comcast.

This. The internet is kind of a "final frontier" for open and (somewhat) unregulated communication and exchange of pretty much anything. We can expect this to change soon if we aren't motivated to do anything about protecting net neutrality.

I think the internet didnt create anonymity but it did create a way to nullify it. The internet should be a neutral ground otherwise it could split into several smaller "internets" completely divided from each other; created by those unhappy with their privacy being violated.

Isn't net neutrality all about ISPs wanting to charge content providers for special fast lanes? In principle I would have no problem with that except that I am told that it will fuck up the non fast lanes too. The debate is too confusing and a little bit too technical for me.

Basically the ISPs are already charging us for Internet from the users. If they are able to implement fast lanes without fucking up the service they are supposed to give to users, I wouldn't have a problem with that.
