Solitary confinement can cause psychological damage. I think there should be restrictions on how long you can be left alone unless you are a violent threat to society.

I do not think so. It all depends. I do think it's overused, but some people prefer to be alone, restricting it would stop these people from doing this.

I meant involuntary solitary confinement should be restricted. Some people want to experience gay sex with their bunkmate and this may be why they choose to have a brush with the law.

True, fair enough.

If you're interested in the topic of how punishment evolved to what it is now over the years you should read Discipline and Punish by Foucault.

I do not remember if he speaks specifically about solitary confinement, but he certainly talks about how imprisonment developed to the point where it is now and at the end of his book asks some very good questions.

I read in some psych. book that solitary is considered the worst form of punishment and prisoners hardened to physical abuse fear solitary the most.

It's because the brain treats sensory and social stimulation the same way as stimulation from food or water. It is a biological necessity

So, to elaborate on my point, it's not like solitary is just some "boo-hoo, you're not giving them enough to do." By placing them in a sensory difficient box you are torturing them the same way as starving them or water boarding them (based on my understanding of psychology). Solitary has the appearance of being painless for people who have a naive view of psychology, but it's a lot worse than that.
