How does this board work? The "middle" of a political spectrum is just the people who don't conform to either "side". If half your opinions are "left" and half are "right", you're directly in the "center." But which opinions are on which "side" doesn't matter. You'd share the same spot with somebody who has the exact opposite opinions on everything, because you both have an even split.

It will be rare to find centered people who have opposite opinions on every subject though, but technically this could happen, sure. This is not a problem though. In contrary, opposite opinions are great, as long as they've been reached by individual thought.

The problem with the whole left and right paradigm is that people who consider themselves to be on one side have a tendency to align with the rest of that side's opinions, if only because they tend to just be around people from that side and get information from that side. If only because people have a tendency to find confirmation of their beliefs, which is very hard to resist.

If you actively look at both sides and took best of either, then no matter what your choices turn out to be, you have at least given it some thought of your own and not mindlessly accepted all opinions of one side as the only truth, which many people on the extreme sides tend to do.

This is what bothers me about left-right think. It coerces people to think in one certain way and actively pushes them away from a centered/balanced opinion. Even if you're slightly biased towards one side, people really just want to identify you with that side. This means that while you may be much closer to someone who's only slightly biased to the other side, than to the extremists on your side, you'll still be grouped in with those extremists.

"you're right-wing? that means you probably hate gays, immigration and are against abortion". Just to give an rough example.

I really hate that. People love to group things and have "us" vs "them" situations, but this is not productive.

The thing is, it doesn't even really make sense to group up a set of opinions and label it "left" or "right" as if they're a package deal. Every opinion should be looked at separately. Every issue too. Sure, you'll see that certain sets of ideas go well together, but that doesn't mean they should all be put in a group automatically.

If you have two stores in your area and you like most stuff from store A, but you like the produce from store B better, then you'd be mad to still only shop at store A out of some kind of principle. Same goes for political views. Shop around, don't stay in just one echo chamber.

I see being in the middle of the political spectrum not as actively choosing the middle, but starting from the middle when looking for solutions.
