I bought myself a set of pencils. I've already used up half of the B and 2B ones, but just today I've come to appreciate how a 4H really helps in rough sketching.
I'm surprised at how much I'm actually enjoying this. I never really enjoyed art class, but then art class was just an excuse to sit around and chat back in my old school.
No.19573
>>19572
I didn't like art class either even though I liked to draw. Might have something to do with the teacher being a massive idiot.
I don't know anything about pencils though, I always just used mechanical pencils since that's all I had.
No.19574
>>19573
What did he do that made him an idiot? And these pencils are just different shades, though the H pencils seem to be sturdier. The B ones keep breaking on me.
I'm happy with my tools now, the only thing I'm missing is an eraser. More often than not, I end up with a decent sketch that's ruined by construction lines and alterations. It's especially bad when I change my mind halfway through about what I'm actually going to do. Take the picture from earlier for example. I was originally going to make Miku rest her hand on the bed, but I decided against it since I can't draw hands right now.
I guess I'm also confused about how I'd go about turning a sketch into a nice piece of art like in this gif. Well, I should probably learn how to actually draw first, then move onto making nice pieces. Baby steps and all that.
No.19575
>>19574
He was kind of weird.
A weekly thing he would do is wear a couple of random items, stand up on a table, and then everyone would have to draw him. Except he would only stand there for about 4 minutes and then would get down and we would all have to fill in the blanks.
Also when he got down he would keep yawning and stretching, talking about how difficult it was to pose and how tired he was, even though the pose was usually just a normal standing pose.
Then we also had these 'contracts' that we could do if we didn't want to follow along with his course. Basically we would make a contract describing what we wanted to do instead of his instruction and then he would sign off on it saying that it was ok and we could do that instead.
I didn't want to draw him anymore so I basically just wrote some contract saying that I would draw characters from games or something (I don't really remember the details) and he signed off on it.
When it was time to show our progress I handed him my folder of work and after looking at them for a little while and commenting on some stuff he said 'Is this everything?' after I replied yes he then asked what I've been doing, and when I replied that I've been drawing he told me to stop.
Also I don't know about what erasers are good but I use a type called a kneaded eraser, it's kind of like putty that you can shape so it comes in handy.
No.19576
>>19575
I honestly don't know what to say to that. Never mind idiot, he sounds like a tosser. I've never heard of a kneaded eraser before, I'll check it out.
Compared to your experience, my art class was a godsend. Our teacher didn't give a shit, so like I said before, we all just sat around and talked about stuff. Maybe a few of us actually drew some things, but I sure didn't.
No.19577

I just remembered something else. He once accused a girl for plagiarizing because she drew a desert sunset that looked vaguely familiar to the design of a canned drink called Cactus Cooler.
'vaguely familiar' meaning they shared some colors but the designs were different.
No.19578
>>19577

No.19579

Yeah, I was happy when I got out of that class.
Kneaded erasers are good for removing the pencil marks that normal erasers sometimes aren't able to get, or leave behind. Plus they're fun to play with when you're bored at your desk.
No.19580
>>19579
I don't blame you. I kinda wish I had some interesting school stories involving crazy teachers, but unfortunately that's how it is. Well, I guess I'm grateful to not have had crazy teachers although my brothers have the best teacher story of all - one of their teachers was a porn star.
Dunno if a kneaded eraser is a good idea then. I might end up playing with it for ages without getting any work done (I get distracted easily).
No.19581

I'm not sure a teacher could also be a porn star here.
It certainly wouldn't help keep you from being distracted although the more you use it the more squishy it becomes, and easier to mold.

Though he got suspended at first, he was actually allowed to teach again. I've heard of a lady teacher being a porn star in America (I think it was America…) but she got struck off entirely.

It's no different here. Out of all the European countries, I think Britain is closest to the USA in terms of culture and social norms. In fact, the point of cultural fear around sexuality is exactly the argument which he put forward, leading to him being successfully reinstated as a teacher.

Have you read Michael Hamptons Figure Drawing yet? If not, go do that. Also, draw a couple of these every day: http://reference.sketchdaily.net/en/ (Mind that some there are some lewds in there.)
Set the timer low, 5 minutes or so, and try to capture the gesture as quickly as possible. After you feel more confident add more time and start working on the nuances. This is a good preparation for living drawing.
You inspired me to pick up practice again and this is one of the exercises I'm doing as well. Might be fun to post our daily share to motivate one another.

Talent is a myth. At best it correlates to a aptness at picking things up - "innate" ability, beyond genetic baggage, has no empirical evidence.

I can't say I was upset because of any personal affection I had towards Iwata, but I certainly felt something.
His sudden passing got me thinking about things like "what if I died suddenly?" I didn't think like that even when people I knew died, so I have no idea what it is about Iwata that got to me.
Still, I try to keep positive nowadays so I'm not feeling down or anything.

I've seen this for myself, it's absolutely true that being strong willed is more important than natural talent. The thing is that sometimes life just doesn't go the way you expect, and it shatters that strong will like glass. It's happened to so many people I know as well as myself. It's the picking yourself back up that's the hardest part of life.

How unkind, but I don't blame you if you're basing your opinion on the high-flyers and bigwigs. I don't exactly care for them either - their clientele isn't to my tastes. I've explained this before: I prefer to work for the laypeople who have honest issues which need sorting out. Divorce, property, wills, employment, children; real issues for real people. As far as I'm concerned, the ones who the big corporations scam the most are their own employees. Solicitors in city firms are known for having rough schedules like "the magic roundabout" - a 7am to 7am shift, with a taxi ride provided for you to shower at home before coming straight back to the office - and all you amount to is a single cog in the mechanism of The System.

If you're interested in discussing it further I'd suggest we move it to email. It is a nice change of pace to talk to a jurist - lawyer at that - who doesn't act like a stereotypical, "holier than thou" braggart.
Nonetheless, even though what you might consider to be good (or at least neutral) work, is still subject to the non-existence of morality. Thus I'm skeptical about the notion that you can act upon law without entering a theoretical Differend.
Of course, this is more an issue with how Law is handled in broad, but jurists are still prominent actors and solidifiers of law. Trias politica? Don't make me laugh!
>Solicitors in city firms are known for having rough schedules like "the magic roundabout" - a 7am to 7am shift, with a taxi ride provided for you to shower at home before coming straight back to the office
"Career development" departments that amount to nothing but menial tasks to get you fired. Or alternatively: overworking senior employees so they have an emotional breakdown and you can fire them with minimal compensation.

You have a problem with this system? It makes sense in theory, but I'll admit in practice it isn't so perfect. Hell, we in the UK don't even practice it properly! There is no separation of personnel between our legislature and executive divisions.

No.20281

Trias politica is unlikely to be properly facilitated due to both theoretical and practical problems. It's outdated and doesn't account for many factors. Law enforcement, or officials in general, and media being their own power. The (illegitimate) might of corporations (or retailers in general) - look at Goldman Sachs. Differing cultures and the related issues of cultural universalism, exclusionism, relativism and so on.
It also, like most Libertarian theories, marginalizes the position of the civilian. Especially people without direct political capital (refugees).
You can probably find more criticism on it, as I'm reciting from the top of my head. Granted, it could be argued, as you referred to, there has never been proper separation of power. Even then, I'm still skeptical about the position the civilian, beyond a facilitator of political capital, and retailers.

>Trias politica is unlikely to be properly facilitated due to both theoretical and practical problems.
You say this but the American Constitution is founded on it, with the first three Articles making express provision for its implementation as the basis of the entire country's legal system. The American Constitution is the go-to example for SoP's many successes and failings, but I fail to see how the issues you've raised are related to SoP at all. Law enforcement is its own issue and only concerns the judiciary. If you're talking about the reactionary nature of law, that is a problem with the legislature, and again, it is only an issue concerning one body.
Might of corporations has more to do with the economic structure of a country than its legal system, and the issues related to media and culture are entirely sociological. As for the marginalised position of the individual, I can understand that concern but the fact is that is a problem with the Rule of Law, not SoP.
Finally, lets not touch on the extremely complicated issues surrounding immigration, especially refugees and differences in cultural, legal and moral heritage.
We really should move this to an email discussion.
Don't worry about /pol/, they're insignificant.

And damn proud of it.
No.20285
>>20284
Too late now, we're going in raw.
The United States expertly exemplifies how the trias politica is antiquated. It is leagues behind on social law as found in Europe, which results in its violent labour market and the (hyper)powerful position of corporations.
Also, I was referring to it not being "trais" politica, but more so an quintet politica (that right? My Latin isn't what it used to be). Law might be constructed by lawmakers, it is not the government that ultimately executes it: it is merely responsible for its execution. The group that solidifies its execution are civil servants, officials and - yes - the strong arm of the law. Therefore they function on a different level and the "government" can't be held responsible for their execution of the law (merely that it was not executed properly).
Likewise, media has been argued to be the second checking power that commentates on all other powers. However, because of the nature of libertarianism, the media are exempt from many forms of balancing - which leads to numerous problems in itself (in an libertarian system). Only in extreme cases would the media regulated.
It is not merely a judiciary issue, as these positions of power are encoded within the system if they manifest. (Mind that the same can be said about the other three.) The position of the civilian is also encoded within this position. I referred to it before as "facilitator of political capital" with that I mean that people are dubbed as accepting or not accepting a manifestation of the system and using their political capital (which they "give" to politicians) to vote. In practice this is not true: there are many different forms of participation - the position of the civilian is a lot more prominent than the trias politica implies. To use libertarian rhetoric: a king is nothing without subjects to rule over. (Even "aliens" belong to a revolution if they compete within it, in spite of "not being part of the system" beforehand.)
Furthermore, what you wrote about the position of corporations is verifiable and historically false. A popular example is communist Russia, wherein corporations were part of the government structure. All the power corporations had was granted by the government. This is an extreme example, but it illustrates what is meant with this argument. Other examples are labour laws, social laws, income regulations, tax distribution and many others. Economy is directly dependent on juristics - look at the "Greexit" situation. (This is a common criticism by libertarian critics on socialist systems: your economy is not organically determent by retailers, but artifically by the state.)
As for culture: I am of the ("complex") position that it is impossible to isolate any one part of society. The police and media acquire their position largely due to their cultural presence. I mentioned above that juristics influence economy (just as economy influences juristics) and likewise culture is tantamount in determining law. When a new culture is introduced, a cultural crisis will occur. This can happen without a problem (German immigrant workers in the Netherlands), but it can also happen with hubbub (Polish immigrant workers in the Netherlands). The trias politica is blind to this issue, as the position of these people. (I mentioned a Differend before, like the situation of marginalized Afro-americans in the United States. The trias politica does not have a response to this: it is as if it isn't real to it.)
Thus, I believe that the model, the theory, is antiquated and is in dire need of an update. Let's call it a complex model of geometrical politics.
Funny thing you mention sociology, because most of these arguments, theories and criticisms were penned by sociologists.
No.20287
>>20285
I really wish we'd had this conversation sooner. A lot of this material is directly relevant to the paper I wrote a short while ago.
I really don't have the energy (or interest, or knowledge for that matter, especially when it comes to sociology) to deal with this on a point by point basis, but I'll give you my opinion.
You're right - all of your statements and criticisms are well backed and most likely correct, (with the notable exception of your "quintet politica" - the civil servants, officials and "strong arm of the law" are all part of the executive and therefore the three-branch system remains intact) but there's a key issue with your conclusion - it isn't pragmatic.
Most legal systems and constitutions aren't updated at their root through usual means - it is usually because of abnormal situations such as war. You need to remember that the topic of discussion, SoP, is a fundamental principle which provides the basis for the legal framework of a country.
America, for instance, would need to scrap the Constitution entirely and redraft it. Britain, with its uncodified Constitution, is in a position to update it as it sees fit - see the Constitutional Reform Act 2005 for an example of this in practice - but even then the changes aren't so dramatic as to call it a new system (even though they did address certain criticisms in separation of personnel). Furthermore, and as I stated previously, even though we say we have SoP, we don't really. It's more of a separate government/judiciary here than a three body structure.
Finally, you want an updated system but you haven't really provided any examples of what you would like to have in place instead of the status quo. Without the provision of alternative solutions, this is all pointless rhetoric - we can point at something and say "that's fucking shit mate" all we like, but as a lawyer, I'd need to find an alternative and say "do that instead". I don't have an alternative in mind for this system, and it still works for the most part.
And I think it's funny to say a legal theory is antiquated. This is the slowest moving field in the world - everything is ancient here. SoP is really one of the newer principles, with Montesquieu's Spirit of Laws dating to the 1700s or so.
No.20288
>>20287
You miss the point about allocating civil servants as their own power: they might constructively fall under the umbrella of the government, but their control - their might (legislated power) - they exert is of a different kind. Therefore they are a theoretical fourth power. Media is also separate from any of the original three powers.
Also, I take issue with your assertion that every theory (of this kind) has to be pragmatized. Even if a critique does not imbue an alternative, it does not invalidate the criticism at hand; it is an academic critique. Or, simply put: I'm a philosopher, not a lawmaker.
What you are doing is forcing me into a position that is irrelevant, as qualified above, by applying meta-information. Rather than address what I brought up directly, you refer to its practicality - which is, again, irrelevant in this context.
Arguing practicality (in this case) is one step above resorting to semantics. Watch out with that.
I think this is a good point to shake hands and call it a good exchange (which I think it was).
No.20289
>>20288
I'm not a philosopher, I'm a lawyer. I don't deal with academic debate most of the time, and I personally don't consider myself the type to get involved in such things, so I'm happy you'd consider this a good exchange at all.
Arguing practicality may seem to be irrelevant to you, but it is the foundation of my work. Remember what I said earlier: I don't care for the "big stuff", I'm primarily concerned with the layperson and what I can do to help them. Thankfully the field is broad enough to accommodate me as well as someone like you who wishes to provide academic criticism.

I remember you were asking about this a while back. "How do you keep merchandise?" or something like that. I didn't answer you properly back then, so I figured I'd give you my answer now.
I used to keep my anime dvds and blurays on my shelf, but they needed to come down and be stored away to make room for several textbooks.
I have manga and a few artbooks stored in boxes. The Rin/Len artbook I got a short while ago has an allocated position on my desk along with my sketchpad and pencils.

Truly the only solution is to convert to the only true religion of our Dark-Father Satan.
Joking aside, sub-urban apartments are surprisingly affordable more so in the EU than in the US. Might be worth your time to give it a look over. Also, consider that your mother is forcing the Church on you out of a sense of care: she wants to preserve you from Hell. If you do decide to confront her, make it clear that you are not concerned with Christianity itself, but merely her forcing it on you. (Unless I miss understood you.)

I've never experimented a real thunderstorm at most a few days where little drops of water came out of the sky. what I got instead is a sand storm here time ago.

15 minutes a day is all you I require of you. Do 30 minutes of figure drawing and 30 minutes of geometry and line practice to make up.

Never forget that persistence is the key: do it, even if you don't feel like it. Do it, even if you don't have the time: MAKE time for it. Do it on lined paper, old documents, envelopes - it doesn't matter, as long as you do it. So…
Keep up the good work, Kohai. Your diligence is inspiring.
Eitherway, what is ailing you?
