Hi /miku/, I have some very important metaphysical questions.
I've seen people saying things like how Miku is supposed to be an android from the future and in that future there is no music, and arguing over whether Rin and Len are twins or mirror images of each other. None of this is explained on the Vocaloid Wiki, and I can't read Japanese so I don't know what CFM's website says about these things. I'd really like to know more about the history of our favourite Vocaloids.

 No.6960

Crypton's website used to say the bit about Miku being an android from the future, but I don't think it does anymore. I know for sure it used to, because I read it there myself.

I think they want her to be an open-ended character that can be interpreted many ways.

I myself do prefer to think of her as a cyborg or android.

As for the Kagamines, I think they were intended to be twins, conceptually, but they left it vague so that their inevitable duets wouldn't be twincest.

 No.6961

Another reason for not making the Kagamines officially twins might have been that they wanted to hold on to the android interpretation. What would it mean for two androids to be twins?

 No.6962

Also I just checked the website out of curiosity. The page on crypton's site just describes the software. There's a link at the bottom for character information that points to piapro.net. The piapro page describes her as "A virtual singer software character with a charming high-pitched voice, blue-green twintails and a characteristic near-future outfit."

>Crypton released the first of their "Character Vocal Series", Hatsune Miku, on August 31, 2007. Crypton had the idea to release Miku as "an android diva in the near-future world where songs are lost."
from Wikipedia, so take it with a grain of salt

Isn't the point of the vocaloids that they are sort of blank? They'd all have to have some crazy backstory to have all the songs make sense. The only thing you know is their age (which is conveniently between adult and child for miku/rin) and some visual characteristics. (basically haircolor and -style)

Fine by me :)

 No.7149

>>7111
The age part is ambiguous if they're androids. Does "age 16" mean she looks 16, or does it mean she has existed for 16 years?

 No.7150

Another question for the ages:
"If Miku is an android from the future, how does she eat leeks?"

 No.7216

>>7150
She comes equipped with a Mr. Fusion that allows her to turn leeks into energy.

I think it's better if they're left as blank slates too. At the very least, their character designs can give hints as to their personalities.

Okay, first off sorry about accidentally posting the kokoro PV separately, but it actually is relevant…how's this for one fan's idea of lore?

What if Rin was the first android and Len was the lonely scientist who made her, as seen in "Kokoro"? pv link: https://youtu.be/MKv7cw_Z1P4

now, here's the fun part: what if another scientist found the remains of the original Rin, used her as the blueprint to make Miku and then was there to debug her when she shorted out (a benefit the original Rin didn't have)? After this, Miku's creator sent her back and along with her, he also sent the data to recreate Rin and Len as androids? here's a link to a PV that suggests that: https://youtu.be/qTQyTuHdnoE

there may be no vocaloid canon, but the fanon can still be fun.

 No.10066

I'm 100% sure crypton intentionally leaves the personalities of the vocaloids as blank as possible so that people aren't restricted in the type of songs they produce (and it worked to an extent, eg. Rin & Len songs used to always be 3edgy5me, but it's only recently people started making really lovey-dovey songs.).

That said, I'm sure the fanon might as well be accepted as canon. Since the fandom invented all the vocaloid's favourite foods. Miku didn't eat leeks until Leek Spin came out as an example.

Also, the Hatsune Mix manga is totally canon since the artist who originally drew Miku wrote it.

What about after making Miku, there was no time travel, and Rin & Len eventually reincarnated a la the end of Regret Message.

>I'm sure the fanon might as well be accepted as canon.

I'd like to disagree here. If everything was invented by the fandom, then everything is fanon, and you can choose to accept it or disregard it, partially or entirely, otherwise it would defeat the original intent of leaving them blank.

The way I see it, there is a few things that the fandom created that a pretty much set in stone, mostly for the Crypton Vocaloids. Kaito is always going to be associated with ice cream. Meiko is always going to be associated with alcohol.

Then you have those things most people agree on. Most people see the Kagamines as being twins (including many of the people who ship them), and this isn't going to change. It only makes sense. They look similar, they're of roughly the same age, and they share a surname, so the conclusion that most people draw and will always draw is that they're twins or someway related (Len being made from Rin's parts/brother and sister/fraternal twins/one person split into two/etc).

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the fandom doesn't so much become canon as it does that almost everybody comes to the same conclusion. In the case of Kaito and ice cream, it's the result of the fandom. In the case of the Kagamines, it's because the canon details tend to lead people to the same unofficial conclusion.

Also nice get.

You are free to go along with anything the fandom came up with, but if someone makes a song about "Kaito hating icecream", it's in their right to do so, and you can agree or disagree with it, which won't validate or invalidate it.

It's that simple.

Most songs depict Miku as a cute, innocent girl. Is it canon? What about songs like Sweet Devil, or World is Mine? Are those canon? Are they not? Why, or why not?

Blank means blank, whether you like it or not. "Fanon" is not "canon", there's a reason we use different words. The fact that Vocaloids have much more fanon than canon is irrelevant.

Just because many people come up with or accept the same interpretation, doesn't make it official.

Anyone trying to pass something as "canon" would only lead to war due to different opinions/preferences. "Fanon" thrives because it's not limited by anything, especially itself.
