Yeah Lyra had pretty much no characterization and the flower ponies got their already shallow one-trick flanderized.
The flower trio are first shown to panic and be melodramatic over the bunnies ruining their entire garden in episode 4. Later in season 2 episode 6 they panic again over Applebloom having too many cutie marks, but in a more forced and unflowing manner, they panic when Spike gives them the signal(talks about AB's problem).
Now in this episode they panic over 1 twig being broken. I get the joke, it's a very shallow joke I'd see on the internet, not in a cartoon. Hence I just can't laugh at it how kneejerky it is. It's not even a good kinda kneejerk.
I was expecting some new creative takes on each character and I was expecting more unpopular background ponies such as Lightning Bolt, Twinkleshine, Colgate, Linky, Blues.
Amethyst Star/Sparkler only got like 5 seconds of screentime.
They should have made it like the Best Night Ever or Friendship Is Magic, where they are given equal amounts of screentime and they each get to shine on their own. Or they group up as a team for an adventure or mission, like Dragonshy or beating the bug bear/panda ring. No they should not each get an element of harmony, no absolutely not … that's bad fanfiction material.
I would have liked to see 22 Shorts Films About Springfield. Just show all the bg ponies minding their own business doing their thing, maybe in those 10-20 seconds they could have gave them some real characterization of their daily businesses.
We asked for a bg pony episode especially to know what they do, to add more information to them. For most people it was optional to see how they interact, what kinda dialogue and voices they'd have. We already kinda had that since episode 1. I'm surprised BonBon finally had a good voice and they never made fun of her many shitty voices " I didn't put those in my bag " (Call of the Cutie). I do remember back in S1 everyone asking Dhx Media to give Dr. Whooves a british voice whenever he talks.
