General tips on developing personal styles and discussion on what you've been trying to achieve in your work lately.

Lately after taking a break from music I've found that almost all my pieces are much less generic. This is because a lot of my music has dissonance right now. I've been wondering if others sometimes feel that they should maybe remove some of the dissonance to make it more accessible and to sound "sweeter". I'm still not sure if I'm good at using it but I've personally been enjoying the sound of my songs more even though they might be objectively worse.

I originally tried to make my music accessible, but over time stopped caring and just made what I personally enjoyed making and listening to.

I then shared my songs with my nest of friends who critique it and give me feedback so I know what is absolute shit and what I should keep in the creation bank.

Works pretty well for me, but I guess if you wanna make it big then you're gonna wanna aim for accessibility and catchiness.

I'm not really even planning on giving me music out or anything, it's more for just me. The problem is not just accessibility for others but me, sometimes I think it sounds mediocre but when I play it precisely right and analyze what I'm playing it sounds great to me. I will probably let some friends critique it sometime though, thanks.

that's good, that's what i pretty much do too. I have almost 20 albums that ive made just for my own enjoyment (i do let my friends listen to some for critique though).

It's kinda therapeutic . But yeah, just make what you enjoy making and listening to.

if you find yourself stuck in this feeling of "this is shit" try some different methods or approaches, maybe imitate a favorite artist and try to turn it into your own thing.

But I think peer review is the best way going about it.

Taking a break is beneficial practicing to much you will refine in to "generic" take a break and hone in on your own style.

Just listen to a ton of music. I've found that it's not just an on; off switch. I felt like I was getting warmer and warmer as time went on.

It started with Radiohead, then electronic music, then indie-electronica-psychedelic pop, and then I decided I have a strong, burning, passionate desire to make the latter.
