MH4U is out in the west! Happy Hunting!

I love this series, but what is it exactly that doesn't appeal with Western audiences? Dark Souls is a Japanese game that did very well in the West, so it certainly can't be difficulty that turns people off. Why hasn't this series taken off?

My best guess is the Japanese aesthetic and that it is currently only on Nintendo consoles. I think a PC release would be HUGE.

Capcom does a really shit job of explaining mechanics. If you want to get started and play MH "seriously", you need to spend a pretty sizable amount of time online learning the ins and outs of the various systems. Things like the way damage is calculated requires external programs if you want to truly understand what's going on. Meanwhile, with Dark Souls, you get right into very familiar territory immediately. You have lock on. You have enemy HP. You don't have to spend half an hour trying to figure out how to get new skills, just slap on some rings and wear whatever the fuck you feel like.

If MH is going to stand a chance of catching on in the west in a big way, they need to ramp up the quality of the tutorials outside of the scope of ez-pz shit like "go collect some meat and roast it".

>I think a PC release would be HUGE.

Definitely, you'd be able to draw in the MMORPG crowd who are already used to spending ridiculous amounts of time on forums sperging out over obtuse mechanics. Let's be honest here, Nintendo isn't known for having a very hardcore install base in recent years. Getting the game out on any platform where the "mature" players are these days would be a godsend for boosting popularity.

tl;dr MH is inaccessible as fuck and sticking the franchise on Nintendo handhelds isn't doing Capcom any favors

And remember what hapened to Trii in the states? Vikings… we got vikings…

No gameplay, no actual facts about the game, just godamned, motherfucking vikings.

As stated, some of the mechanics are just poorly explained, if even at all.
Luckily what I noticed from the 4U demo, they take some time to try to explain the mechanics of Hitzones. The tutorial for guns even touches on Effective Range, something that, for being so RIDICULOUSLY important for gunning effectively, was never even mentioned in the in-game resources before.

Thankfully the tutorial in Tri U took some time to explain how armor skills work, what traps do, how to capture and what it does.

If they just included some in game tutorials on how elemental and ailment damage works on different weapons, namely that they aren't effected by normal attack modifiers, which is a really common and understandable misconception a lot of new players fall into, I think it'd make the game much easier for people to grasp.

I'm sure not everybody wants to go scouring around on forums for explanations on fundamental mechanics in a game that should just be explained to you IN GAME.

tl;dr Mechanics surrounding damage calculation (Hitzones, Element/Ailment modifiers on weapons.) need to be explained more in game rather than in ulterior resources.

Call me an idiot, but I always felt like MH has more of a Chinese aesthetic than a Japanese one.

I think it might be the difficulty that gets a lot of gamers though. The controls themselves can be a bit counter-intuitive.

I have no idea what you're talking about. My first monster hunter was 3U on the 3ds and I learned everything I needed to know solely by just playing the game and retrying missions I failed until I got good.

I didn't need to sperg out over anything other than farming shit for better items.
