09754c No.120311

For NaNoWriMo, I wrote this piece. The art for the cover, shown above, is done by the magnificently talented Mary Turgeon.

This book is part of a long-term setting I've been working on, meant to stimulate fantasies of Planetary Romance and Space Opera. I just published the entire work on Amazon, where- if you own a kindle, any kind of smart phone, or any kind of personal computer- you can buy the entire 116,000 word novel right now for five dollars American.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019MON6DW?*Version*=1&*entries*=0

However, I recognize that you may not have five dollars free. You may not be sure that my writing is worth five dollars! That's why I'm posting it here. Once a week, from now until May 3rd, on each Tuesday, I'll be posting the entire story, in its 21 chapters.

Now, you may be asking yourself, 'You fool! What on earth would ever possess you to give this away for free? Now I just have to wait to see it all!' And that's fine with me. It's nice to make a bit of money on these things, but I know that's not the most realistic view, especially if you're not invested. That's why I'm posting it. I would like to write many more stories in the future in this same setting, and if you enjoy this one, it's more likely that you might be willing to buy one in the future.

All I ask is that if you enjoy my work, you let others know about it. I hope that you share it. I hope that you encourage others to read it. I hope you might consider leaving an encouraging word, or sharing a part of it that you particularly enjoyed. I even appreciate if you care enough to state something you find off-putting.

Most of all, I hope that you enjoy this. I put a lot of work and spirit into it, and more than anything else, I hope it makes you feel worth the read.

But thanks. This is very generous

>magnificently talented Mary Turgeon.

I mean if she's doing it for free then I can see why you'd compliment her like that but eugh, that face . . .

I like it! Thanks for posting it here.

4079ff No.120636

>>120616

The face is that way for a reason. It's meant to evoke a Chinese doll, rather than an actual, human face. You're not the first person to be put off by it, though, which I can understand- But for what it's worth, it is meant to be a little intentionally unsettling and alien.

And I'm really glad that you have enjoyed it so far. I'm working on a better summary, which I will likely post here. And it's probably for the best that the new sight will wipe things so I can start afresh.

4079ff No.122878

A little summary of the story to pique the interest…

The Only Empire, an ancient race of unthinkable power, dying off in the face of ennui and hopelessness. Its nemesis, Heaven, the god-like entity that opposes it from the Galactic Core. And humanity, the race that holds the key to curing the Empire's sickness and Heaven's loneliness. Humanity has only recently ventured out into the stars, and finds itself the center of attention from the two most powerful races in the galaxy. Its independence and its very survival rely on being clever enough to avoid being torn between Heaven and Eden.

A young scholar finds himself shanghaied by Imperial pirates, to be sold into slavery. To save himself, he decides to tell the story of Sinbad the Spacefarer, disgraced captain of the Orion Hierarchy, first human Crown Knight of the Empire. His seven voyages took him from the unknown birthplace of the Whale Clan, to the outer reaches of the Empire, to the deep unknown on the far side of the core, and other, stranger places. Sinbad's story is a romance, of a man torn between his duty to his superiors, and the strange, lonely Imperials who he finds out among the stars. He struggles to give hope to his people, and the Empire, while forced to confront the fact that he's a small fish in a great big ocean. In the meantime, the scholar desperately tries to find out why the captain of the pirates has such a deep grudge against humans.

still surprised /mgt/ didn't notice your post when you first came up with that setting of yours.

I found it interesting since heaven ships reminded me of peculiarity of old holy weapons. And how they granted power to worthy subjects.

699ba2 No.126007

Anyway just finished reading it. It's good anon, you're a talented writer. I might have bought the book if my computer hadn't broke and I wasn't using a Windows XP laptop. I'm worried I won't be able to actually read it if I buy it since it's listed only as a kindle thing.

For reference, I'm pretty absolutely sure you can read Kindle stuff with their program on any computer, but I can understand not wanting to take that chance. The feedback is quite appreciated, though, because I sometimes don't know if posting things on here is even worth it! It means a lot to me! If you enjoy it, the most I ask is that you tell other people about it.

I also read your story on…The relic weapons? I forgot what they're called. Toying with the idea of writing a story about a swordsman that's weak willed, and knows he's weak-willed, but carries a normal sword and a preta for emergency situations.

>>126832

Sounds like a cool idea! I've always been a deep fan of empathic weapons and, in general, intelligent artifacts. The third arc is going to be delving a bit into the Construct Kingdom. You'd have to remind me which specific story involving the relic weapons; I've written a lot over the last couple of years.

your writing has been hit and miss for me because of all the different fetishes you cover. I appreciate that variety because some your stories has featured my favorites thanks to that and in your stand-alone stories you have been really good about warning as to the major fetishes covered.

But it also means that when you advertise a long novel like this, it's a potential minefield.

Any chance you could a post a spoilered list of fetishes that appear in the novel for us?

Also, have you considered selling through any other outlets (like Smashwords or something). I know Amazon is the biggest seller but they also follow the practice of DRM and force reading clients. Some of us don't appreciate our modern book stores trying to lock reades into their ecosystems of software and devices. Plus they've been know to pull crap like delete purchased books off reader's devices over copyright disputes….

Other online ebook retailers keep it simple - buy a book, log in and download a DRM free copy in several formats and read it on any device and whatever software you prefer that knows how to handle said format - leaves readers free to use our preferred e-readers and library managers.

a1ea55 No.128468

>>128412

I, in fact, had no idea that Amazon is unique in that; I'd always avoided using Smashwords as a result of its relative lack of market base compared to Amazon, and because I didn't know that it offered those options. I always opt for DRM free on amazon, but knowing that this is an issue, I'll certainly be adding things to Smashwords as well, so as to ensure that people have a proper choice! Thanks for letting me know!

As to the fetishes: Yeah. I am, personally, an absolute deviant to the point that there are only a handful of fetishes I don't have, but I try to keep each of my individual novels somewhat focused, and give fair warning. A brief description of the fetishes present in each arc will follow; Usually, there's only sexual stuff in the second chapter of the arc, and not a whole lot of it, so you should be able to dodge any kink that you'd prefer to avoid without losing any of the story. Just as a warning, these tend to have a LOT of spoilers for what's coming up.

Arc 1: Colossal sandworm girl, pregnancy fetish, blowjobs.

Arc 2: Dullahan girl, substantial age differences, clingy young women.

Arc 3: Yandere, homicidal robot girls stabbing and getting bullied.

Arc 4: Sexy cougar ladies, both in the sense of 'being older and wiser' and 'Is an actual killer mountain cat woman', Pregnancy.

Arc 5: TRIGGER WARNING FOR /MONSTER/:Sinbad gets genderbent into a woman; The love interest is a lamia monster boy. CAVEAT TO TRIGGER WARNING THAT SPOILS ARC 7: The lamia monster boy winds up getting genderbent into a girl.

Arc 6: Crazy angel??? chicks, sex with a lot of anonymous women.

Arc 7: Potentially disappointing wrap-up. Not because I think it's bad, but wrap-ups always tend to be disappointing.

699ba2 No.138013

The last two chapters are good (although I think the machine ship went from crazy back to sane way too quickly). I really like how needy the machine clan are portrayed towards human, and how…humaboo they are? But the constant memeing and references were really irritating and ripped me right out of the story each time. The machine analysis of Terminator 2 was cute and I liked reading it, but Diogenes quoting Shodan and Jeeves saying "Don't stick your dick in crazy" was extremely cringy, no offense.

That said I do look forward to every new chapter and do like this stuff.

a1ea55 No.138064

>>138013

Just because someone isn't acting crazy at the moment, it doesn't mean they're sane.

I can understand how they're not everyone's cup of tea. An important thing to remember is that 'Humaboo' is a big thing with the Empire as a whole, and the Machine Clan more than many. They're more obsessed with human culture than most humans are. It's usually fairly harmless.

It's intended to come across as something along the lines of someone tossing out Charles Dickens lines. It's a little bit weird, but considering that Imperial culture is so enamored with human society, it'd be a bit strange for them not to make references to it. It's not as up-to-date, but you'll always find nerds pining away for the good old 'classics'. Even if they're, in fact, older than said classics.

But even with all of that, I can certainly see why it'd make you cringe nonetheless. C'est la vie!

699ba2 No.138123

>>138064

Like I said, I LOVE the humaboo thing, it's something I wish was explored more in MG stuff.

But memeing just shatters my immersion. It's my own deal. Maybe it works in-universe in the cultural context the MC has, where it's as classic to him as someone quoting lines from classic literature, which is a staple in stories for high minded characters, but since I've been brought up among the fiction they're quoting it feels like someone making Monty Python references. Rips me right out of the narrative.

a1ea55 No.138213

>>138123

I can dig it. It's odd getting yourself immersed in a futuristic story and then suddenly getting yanked back to the present day and age by a quote.

The next story I want to write along these lines is going to be based loosely off of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves, and I want to make one of the main characters to be an AI made from a human's personal digital assistant. Might be interesting to see how that plays out.

a9f7ca No.138761

I really like your works, but I have a question: Have you ever written a story involving an arachne?

a1ea55 No.138917

>>138761

Hmmm… A handful, but none in a while. I am extremely fond or Arachne, though, so I should look into one again some time soon.

In the setting of Between Heaven and Eden, most arachne are, essentially, peace-officers for the Insect Clan. Not technically insects, obviously, but that's part of the point- They're predators of the other Imperials of the Insect Clan, hunting them down and generally being treated as very scary individuals. This makes them extremely lonely and clingy. One of the three candidates from the Insect Clan for Empress is a dark horse in the form of the chief of the Insect Intelligence Bureau, whose damaged genes mean- under current Insect Clan law- that she's not allowed to take a human as a mate. The only way she could do that is break the law- something she's not willing to do- or take a position as Empress or Queen of the Beast Kingdom.

I'm admittedly somewhat into the whole 'Willing to overturn the entire established order just to get a boyfriend' thing.

>>149310

Yeah I had a lot of fun writing this one. Coming up with a situation remote enough that it could even cut off contact from the Empire was an interesting mental exercise.

87bd76 No.149810

>"Say hello to the Chief of Security. Halfway Intelligence, what's the largest and most intimidating security construct you have available?"

>"The largest security device is the T-386 Intimidatrix."

Bit on the nose lad. I also don't understand the thinking behind making the first contact protocols so internetty and unserious, but apart from that the story is good.

4079ff No.150013

>>149810

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberdyne_Inc. There is a real-life Japanese company specializing in robotics who calls itself Cyberdyne and who has invented the HAL robotic exoskeleton suit. Real life is a bit on the nose. It's also pretty likely that Sinbad forgot the exact model name of the security construct, and just threw out something that sounded good. This is a third-hand story, after all.

The first contact protocols, in turn, are kind of a demonstration of the EU's position among humanity as a whole. Before humanity learned about the Empire, absolutely nobody thought intelligent life was out there. Afterwards, nobody thought they'd find intelligent life that the Empire hadn't already contacted and most likely annexed long ago. First contact was a joke before humans met the Empire, and it's become a joke afterwards. On one level, it's meant to be rather funny that such a major institution gets away with such tongue-in-cheek attitudes. On another level… Well, it says a lot about the despair that they can feel, sometimes.
