I've played Windwaker, Medli's kind are born humans.
I remember seeing the prince as just a human kid with a big nose, a human nose I might add.
When they come of age, they go to the top of the mountain to perform a ritual with a magical dragon scale that turns their noses into beaks, feet into talons and grow wings on their arms.
They can't pass these avian traits genetically down the line, so their kids who will be born human have to go through the ritual as well and it becomes tradition.
Medli isn't born a monster girl, but she was made one. She's also a descendant of a Zora, so there's that.

Interesting question. I think lightweight metal could help in combat, not to slow the harpy down too much.
I can see the potential of having sharp claws to attach to the talons. Additional you could add spikes/bladed part to attach to the 'index finger/thumb' part of the wings - could be useful for close-range combat, slashing/stabbing with wings. I'm assuming the wings to be similar to say, Papi's wings. I could be wrong with 'index finger/thumb' thing. Wing weapons might make flight a issue though, they could be unbalanced in flight - they're possibly more effective for land combat than aerial combat.
On other hand, if talons are already deadly enough, adding claws could be unnecessary as they could be extra weight or be fragile if they're lightweight not to hamper her flight. I'm no weapon expert so I expect a /k/ommando to correct me on those issues. :^)

depends on how far along the tech tree they are, pre industrial spears and bows would do well, the spears would give a long reach which would compliment the mobility of flight, bows would be good because again the mobility would make them great skirmishers or even encourage them to take the same role as cav archers, but better since the great flaw for cav archers was reliance on terrain and a lack of fortifications. and the harpies circumvent all of this by flying.
if its post industrial pre modern i would reckon they would make good scouts or dragoons fro the same reason as above. so i would give them cavalry rifles.
in a modern setting they would probably serve as excellent forward observers and scouts, but their effectiveness as a hard combat role would be severely diminished by the tech available.
also i think i can figure out how a harpy would use a rifle, laying in a supine position and using the talons to cycle the rifle, think pic related but further forward due to using feet.

you want them to stay as far way from the enemies weapons as much as possible, especially since their only strenght is mobility, the second you get that close to someone you lose that, and if they get injured in the fight they lose that mobility entirely, so you need to minimize the risk of that happening by extending its reach and delegating it to a harassment or raiding role where they can do extraordinary amounts of damage without engaging a cohesive unit of anything that could fuck them up. like sending them after archers or supply trains while oni's and centaurs pummel infantry and cavalry.

Superman will outlive everyone, all he lacks is a physical body. In this way I want good examples for anons to live by, to worship the idea of.
A good example in fiction of this is the Eldar pantheon in warhammer. Synthetic beings to serve a purpose. As long as people keep in mind it's not "real" real, its benefits build civilizations.
