Jesus Christ, that's the saddest shit happened this year. Keith Emerson is the creator of prog, every prog bands that came after The Nice were influenced by Keith Emerson. The whole Crimson King album reeks Emmerlist Davjack all over the place. If you don't think that Keith Emerson is the most important, innovative figure in prog music, then you should just kill yourself. Patrick Moraz might be a better keyboardist and Rick Wakeman might be a better classical composer, but their careers were based on the prog foundation that Keith Emerson has established. I like Rick Wakeman more though.
RIP in peace. This thread deserves a sticky.
>Santa Monica Police stated within a few hours that they were investigating the death as a possible suicide by gunshot.

Listen to The Nice first, they have some really good albums. Here are the highlights:
The Thoughts of Emmerlist Davjack (one of the first truly prog album ever recorded, it's a bizzare mix of funk, jazz, and classical): Flowers King of Flies, Rondo, War and Peace, Dawn
Ars Longa Vita Brevis: Happy Freuds, Kareila Suite, Prelude, Realization, Brandenburger, coda
Nice: All tracks are really worth listening, but For Example and Hang on to a Dream are my favorites. Rondo '69 is actually inferior to the original Rondo because no Dave O'List's cool licks.
Five Bridges (best NICE album IMO, 10/10): all the tracks are perfect, but make sure you listen to the improved Karelia Suite and Pathetique.
Elegy: They're just re-releasing tracks that were recorded live back in '69.
Then ELP, it's overall a better band than The Nice, but IMO missing the experimental blues/jazz stuff:
Emerson Lake Palmer: The Barbarian, Take a Pebble, Knife Edge, and Tank are all great, the rest not so much.
Tarkus: Pretty overrated IMO. Tarkus is an extremely complex composition, but the harmony and note progression suck ass. B side is garbage, but Infinite Space is pretty good, an underrated track.
Trilogy: Endless Enigma, Fugue, From The Beginning, and Trilogy. They're the best tracks of the album.
Pictures at an Exhibition: Not as good as the original classical composition, but fun to pretty fun to listen to. My favorites are Old Castle/Blues Variation and Curse of Baba Yaga.
Brain Salad Surgery: This album is THE SHIT. 10/10. Toccata is literally perfect, a perfect prog adaption of Ginastera, I haven't seen any orchestra adaption/rendition being this good in my life. Karn Evil 9 except the 3rd Impression are great too. Definitely nowhere as grandeur as Tarkus, but it has more "spirit" put into it.
Works Volume 1: Decent eclectic prog album, don't expect to find any theme and atmosphere you found in all the previous ELP albums. Keith's Piano Concerto is a cool listening, but it really goes nowhere, doesn't know what it wants to be, just like like Tarkus, maybe a bit worse. Hallowed Be Thy Name, The Enemy God Dances with the Black Spirits, L.A. Nights, Two Part Invention in D Minor, Food for Your Soul, rendition of Tank, and Pirates are all pretty kickass jazzy stuff.
Works Vol 2: It's literally a garbage can, only contains unreleased ELP tracks, but not bad. Highlights are: Tiger in a Spotlight, Apple Blossoms, Bullfrog, BSS (unreleased single), and So Far to Fall.
Love Beach: This shit is absolutely fucking trash. ELP tried to go pop/butt rock and failed really miserably. There are a few good stuff like Canario (which is a really good 5 minutes track that redeemed the whole side A) and the middle parts of Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman, they have some ELP signatures.
Emerson Lake Powell: A pretty good prog disco album, but not remotely as good as previous ELP and Nice stuff. The Score and Mars, the Bringer of War are the best tracks.
I don't like the later ELP's albums, but they got some decent songs like Romeo and Juliet and the 14 minutes version of Pictures at an Exhibition.
Keith Emerson himself got an underrated solo discography. Inferior to Rick Wakeman or Patrick Moraz though, obviously. I like Honkey (where he as a little white boy plays funky tunes with a bunch of BBC bearing bucks) and his Marc Bonnila stuff.
