How can anyone who is not psychotic appreciate something like this? The minute I hear cookie monster vocals or ghoul-sounding black metal vocals or screamed metalcore vocals I immediately think it's stupid, turn it off, and shake my head at the realization that almost all modern heavy music is like this.

How can so many people tolerate it?

"Extreme metal" is just an umbrella term for a bunch of different subgenres.

Death metal is only one of them, other kinds of extreme metal have vocals which are actually intelligible.

I think I saw someone asking once on the internet that he found just playing random notes on a guitar with distortion sounds brutal as fuck and if he should do this more often in his death metal band

This probably won't change your opinion since you sound condescending and/or like you're just b8ing, but this band helped me and several other people I know get into this kind of vocals. Also Opeth (embedding more than one video when)

I listen to way, way weirder shit now compared to when I was 15, though, so I wouldn't know if there's something more accessible now.

Doom metal is the only metal I really like. Sometimes I listen to speed metal because I used to listen to it in high school. Opeth is okay. Prog metal doesn't have the shit vocals but I don't really like it that much.
