I'm interested in making music for shits and giggles, but I'd rather not fork over a ton of money just to find out I'm talentless.

Can any kind anons recommend cheap or free software for someone like myself to experiment with?

Auto-tune would be a plus.

Why would you EVER want to use auto-tune?

To play around with till I find a pleasing distortion effect.

You're not talented. Producing is difficult and takes just as many hours to perfect a skillset as many other "talents".

That being said, Audacity is free. Check out a tutorial vid and if it doesn't bore you to death, maybe you'll remain interested long enough to get to the point where you hate yourself.

Well, I don't know whether to thank you or slap you.

Thanks for the link and the honesty, at the very least.

My aim is mostly recreational, maybe something to help keep the kids occupied, too, as long it's anything but TV or internet.

Thanks, guys.

There's a lot of resources to learn from and programs to make music with.

Audacity is nice and free as that anon said. LMMS is algo simple to use and can get nice sounding results. Try to learn a bit of basic music theory and apply it with these programs. It's fun as hell to learn and to feel you're getting a bit better at it everyday.

there's also trackers like Famitracker, Milkytracker, deflemask (and PxTone, kinda) if you're into low-fi and chiptunes.

Be slow, but constant, and have fun, mate.

MuLab has a good free deal. Reaper is $60. Or you could just pirate FL studio like everyone else.
