Welcome to the board dude!

Your stuff is awesome, super clean. I'd like to know, do have much formal education in audio engineering and the such? Or are you mostly self taught. I'm mostly self taught and I'd just like to hear a pro's perspective

I'm formally trained I went to SSR Manchester, one of Europe's first pro audio schools. The most important thing is the grasp of frequencies, the octaves and the ideas of harmonics. Listening to your stuff it's missing a lot in the range between 50Hz-100Hz which is the really deep range, 100-220 will give you punch which you definitely have but below that is a lot warmer and really helps to give a kick drum or bassline emphasis, but don't go overboard with it.

>missing a lot in the range between 50Hz-100Hz which is the really deep range

Are we talking the whole track here? I do filter out alot of lows in the mix to make headroom for the bass in the kick drum, but Im still trying to get a hold of mixdown practices. That's why I created this board, so myself and others can learn.

Well I'm listening to a few songs, that was on the Summertime Sadness mix. I'm listening to this Prometheus track and you definitely don't have an issue there and in fact the way you play with the frequencies with that synth line is quite playful. It's not my genre by a long shot. I'd recommend using higher quality samples, especially for drums, unless it's the idea you're aiming for but I find these low quality cymbals sound really amateur. The included sample libraries with Logic Pro are normally pretty good.

>summer time sadness

Yeah I agree that one is super amateur, Im not happy with it at all to be honest.

Is it this one you're talking about? That's my most recent and best. And I agree, the cymbol is quite shit, and Ive been contemplating changing it. 99% of the stuff on there is old crap, so please don't judge me too harshly. any other samples that sound really crappy? or was it just percussive stuff?

If I were to post my soundcloud could you give me a few points that I lack in my production?

Link us your stuff and we can give you tips

I've just been doing this for fun with a barebones setup so there is probably a lot wrong but I would still like to know what areas I should think about.

So I listened to The Reckoner Remix, the vocal reverb parts, the reversed ones, are too loud, and have some loud resonant peaks, as does alot of the instrumental stuff. Makes it hurt to listen to, needs Eqing.

The actual mix is not half bad, but messy is some areas, like way too much reverb on some parts, and resonance up the arse.

I also listened to the top track Split/\Mind, its nice, does have a dark feel, however I think the percussive stuff is a bit all over the place. Sometimes less is more. Think about the placement of your sounds. Think to yourself, does this NEED to be there.

Thanks man, the only thing I could say is that for the Reckoner remix, at that point, I didn't know how to isolate the vocals good enough and the acapellas I found online weren't too good so adding a shiton of reverb to the vocals was just my way of stopping the original instruments coming through. Thanks again.

Ooh ooh am I too late for feedback session? I made my first electronic tune with ableton and was wondering if someone could give me feedbacks on mixing and composition.

cheers!

First of all, dry as fuck mix. The samples are boring and need reverb, the pad that comes in has too much reverb and needs EQing, its smothering everything.

The kickdrum is clipping, try either EQing or compressing it. The little riff that comes in at around 1:17 needs to be louder and thicker. Needs bass too.

The pads also seem to be in the wrong key sometimes, like during 1:45-1:46

the song also lacks drive and doesnt really make sense. Make the percussion more present in the mix, the kick drum and snare are the real driving point in most drum and bass style tracks, with the crashes and hats as fillers and rhythm stabilizers. The vocal at the end is really unclear, also has too much reverb and bass.

Thanks a lot I really appreciate this!

Yes, now that you've pointed it out the EQs seems to be very flat. Do you think the whole sounds tend to lean on just the lower spectrum of the EQ? As in the whole thing sounds really 'low' for me if that makes sense.

And I guess I still haven't done the samples any justice. They all were taken from really great songs, but I guess what I was doing was just butchering them senselessly. Welp, back to practice!

dc6db4 No.121

>>115
I dont think it leans in any particular direction of the spectrum, sometimes it lacks bass, sometimes it has too much. Alot of the time there is alot of resonance. Or transient peaks (randomly high peaks that give ear piercing sounds). Try to make each sound good on its own, then make them sound good together. But you should really follow the number one rule or music.

If it sounds good, then do it.

There's no such thing as a correct procedure in music, only tips and guidelines

How do I make an acapella out of a song?
Do I have to ask for it, or can I use EQ magic to make it happen?

Hey how's it going could you PLEASE test out the "tuned percussion" on Garageband (I think it's a xylophone) and explain why it sounds so absolutely terrible when remotely loud.

Other than the fact that it's from Garageband, seems to me that most Xylophones are a motherfucker to EQ and when you do chords or even single notes, shit crackles at the tail end and sounds disgusting, especially with Reverb.

I tried making a separate track for the reverb on GB and tried matrix verbs too but no luck. The lower notes I'm using sound shit and I can't EQ out the undertone harmonics without the main notes getting fucked up a tad.

Any advice would be dope thanks.

dc6db4 No.368

>>361
Try bouncing each note and work with samples, rather than a synth. the crackling sounds like perhaps a clipping issue, as phasing isnt characterised by cracking, but rather a swooshing movement type sound.

Are you trying to do a martin Garrix style lead?

Also reverb on a send works better, with a low mix
