So, what's a good place to get started with using DAWs?

I don't mean the basics of music making, or anything, I've done my share of composition on paper, but just, actually using the software?

I own the Cakewalk products, SONAR and Music Creator, and the interface seems really obtuse and even finding the instruments I want to work with is difficult, though I do own them.

Any tips or suggestions?
Cakewalk's own tutorials seem to be for other versions of their software, and skip around too much, and I haven't been able to find much independently when it comes to the 'actually using the program' as opposed to 'how to make music'.

I tried FL first, which is what most people do, due to its beginner friendly design, it helped kickstart m y understanding of DAWs, but i hated it. Switched to Cubase and havent looked back, much better interface for my style of production and work flow. Honestly just try lots of DAWs and use the one you like most. The DAW you use doesnt really matter, its just preference

Sonar X3? Enjoy my terrible tutorial. Learn and love your hotkeys.
I will list the ones I use most.

P - Preferences

B - Browser (opens the browser. click Synth in the browser. Click the plus sign and select a VST. A VST is a virtual instrument, like a synth, sampler, etc. Once you have a VST open, you can go to your midi track. Adjust the "Output" to whatever VST you just created)

Alt+3 - Opens Piano Roll view when a track or clip is selected (this allows you to edit your MIDI data. Your MIDI data controls your VSTs)

F5 - Equips the Smart Tool. (The Smart Tool is the tool you'll be using most when editing clips or MIDI tracks)

S - Slice the currently selected track(s) at the currently select time

Alt+2 - Opens Console view (This let's you adjust the master volumes of each track)

Be adjusting volumes in Console view, it is important to remember that each VST you create in a project gets it's own track, which is separate from the midi track. Sometime adjusting the volume of the MIDI track doesn't yield results, so you'll have to adjust the volume of the VST's track. When you finally export a project and render it into a file, remember to have both the midi and VST tracks selected.

I don't know what VSTs come with the Studio version of your software (I use Producer), but there are a few free ones online. Look up soundfonts and learn what they are. Look up how to use each of your VSTs and experiment with them.

I'm probably only 75% accurate on all of this, but it should be enough to get you started and learning on your own. There are a number of helpful videos on youtube. As you learn more, your Google-Fu on this subject will improve, meaning you will understand the best way to search for the information you want.

Also, know that the question you're going to ask most often is "Why isn't there any sound? Why isn't this thing outputting?"

Thanks - I'm the first to admit that I'm not the most digitally literate person out there, and things like this are a big help.

Heeeeey, I own X3, too!

Small tip: F5-F9 and the middle mouse button allow you to quick change the mouse tools.

Hey, does anyone know how to link the knobs on my midi controller to the controls on a VST?

Should be a midi learn function in the vst. Click midi learn, sometimes its a buttons, you press that, then the knob you want to control, then your physical knob, and other times its a right click on the desired knob.
