Lyrics thread
How do you guys go about writing lyrics?
I'll usually get an interesting arrangement or theme going, and while I write the vocal melody, phrases will pop up here and there, and I'll fill out the blanks and possibly alter the existing lyrics once I have a good idea of what the song is about, and how the topic is portrayed, like the mood of the character singing it. Anyone else writing a concept album/story arc-based album?
Post your lyrics and rate each other if you're so inclined.

Shameless Self Promotion Thread
For everyone of us that wants to be listened.
Be sure to listen some of the other songs/albums posted in this thread, or this kind of thread wont have any interest.
Here i start : https://soundcloud.com/askerad/sets/f1rst
Laziest Music seems to trend.
I don't know about you - but things like Vaporwave? Seriously? I understand the idea of it about corporations and such, but it is typical lazy crap made by urban woodsman hipsters with manbuns and gender studies rockabilly type students who call an instagram photo art while pretentiously sipping a caffe latte in some substandard coffeehouse somewhere in Melbourne. All it is is some 90s promotional video music, looped, slowed down with some effects. How about we all just do that if that is the standard these days?
I guess any idiot can make music these days.
Sunvox
In my experience, the best minimal, GNU+Linux native DAW is Sunvox. The only thing it's missing is a simple, non-tracker composition method. I'd like to drag and drop samples along a timeline, ie. FL Studio style. Renoise is absurdly expensive, Ardour is bloated (but FOSS) trash, Pydaw requires qt bloat, and LMMS is incomprehensible and weird. What are your thoughts on Sunvox?
FL Studio Mixer
Hey FL users, I got a question concerning mixer inserts.
Consider pic related n°1. I want some instruments, let's say inserts 2, 3 and 4, to go through the exact same effects.
>route inserts 2, 3 and 4 to insert 7, and apply effects on insert 7
Ok now I want to apply an effect on the lead, but I want it to be applied after the effects in insert 7
>I can't apply it on insert 2 because it would be before insert 7 effects
>I can't apply it on insert 7 or any subrouted track because the pad and 6x resampled harmor would have to go through it as well, and I don't want that
>I am screwed
How do I do such a thing ?
What I want is kind of a mixer insert that I can apply effects on, and any other track routed to it would virtually replicate the effects on itself. The audio of the instrument inserts isn't actually sent into the effect insert.
See pic related n°2 : what I am currently doing and which I don't want
See pic related n°3 : what I would like to do
I insist that the effects are the same effects from the same tracks because I'd rather not spend a shitload of time doing changes to ALL effects when I do a slight change for one, and the same goes for automations.
Copyright
This popular song sampled these vocals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiJUXmIQztg (Approx 1:04)
-How did this artist do this without legal repercussions?
-Let's say the copyright expired or something, how on earth did he lift the vocals from the original track? I cannot find any acapellas online.
How do artists do this? I see it so much in the house genre especially, vocals lifted from older tracks and made new.
If you look on whosampled.com you'll find that 90% of house music does this, but I cannot figure out how.
Sound Library
>want to be a producer
>dont have a library of samples and synths to use for production
How do I get them? How do I build my sound library to the point where I can sit down and produce some quality music?
I cant make anything right now because I have nothing to work with. I have a bunch of presets, only know how to use Sylenth1 just barely.
What I want to know is how and where producers get their sounds and how theyre library is set up.
Someone add what im missing or correct me, producers get their sounds from:
>sample packs
>presets
>tweaking presets to get desired sound
>making own samples
pls respond
Musicians with high quality recording equipment?j
Ello. How much would you guys charge me to play the guitar on about 10 songs for my album? Would you do it for royalties and credits? Hourly?
Needed: guitar, bass, vocalists who can really pour it out (punk rock/rock opera style), violinists, trumpet, and probably more, I don't know yet. It's still just a theoretical question that will most likely end up with me paying you if 1) anyone wants the job and 2) I'm satisfied with your playing.

Recognizing instruments
Am I the only person who has trouble recognizing instruments.
And I don't mean famous instruments, or the obvious ones, but sometimes, there's an instrument on a song, perhaps obscure, probably modified, and when you want to "recreate it", you might find a great deal of time, trying to find a similar instrument to it. Is this normal, or I'm just being complaining?
Is there a method to guess an instrument faster, or something?
Top yes
Guys, look at what my friend did. I made this little song thingy (it's the ending to my album), and he noticed it's a second shorter than the trailer for the god awful movie Knight of Cups.
Check out what happened with put my song over the trailer.

Orchestral Drums
Hey /musicprod/ I'm looking for cinematic/orchestral drums, preferably free as they are only for a small project. I'm not super fussed on the quality and I'm not looking for a Kontact library as I'm currently unable to run it so sample packs are preferred.
Thanks in advance :)

In the .rar are eight samples. Rules are:
Use ONLY these samples. No synths. You can put the samples into a sampler and make a grain of it into a tone.
You can mangle and edit the samples how ever you like, including vocoding.
Must also include any non musical vocal sample of your choice (Not an acapella).
Deadline is December the 12th.
Gear Building
So i lurked for a bit here tho i'm not sure whether or not this belongs here, so sorry if i don't know my shit. I've seen a lot of posts about software, but not a lot about hardware.
I'm an active guitar player (almost 4 years now) and a freshman engineering student, and i'm looking for ways to get into building myself some gear, since i'm kind of a cheap (and not very wealthy) bastard and the country that i live in is practically the third world when it comes to music, but also because i want to expand my sound engineering knowledge. Where would be a good place to start? I am currently on a course of basic electronics so i know the very basics of how some components work. / Any other tips?
Mixing my latest song I realized something. If I turn DOWN the high end of my kick, the volume of the kick actually gets louder. What.
It's making my head hurt trying to think my way around this. By eqing my instruments I'm actually making my mix muddier...
This is so counter-intuitive, can anyone shed some light?
Hey guys.
I want to into /musicprod/ after lurking /mu/ for the last 4 years.
The thing is though I suck at instruments and have only been using DAWs to make shitty beats. I'm getting kinda tired of it and want to learn the piano, but have no room for a huge one.
Do you know any good keyboards to start out on?
Any good books I can buy to learn?
Also this was what I was planning on buying, but I'm not sure just yet...
Data Bending
So I discovered this thread on /b/ about data bending.
To "data bend", you can for instance save a .bmp or .tif file and import it as "raw data" to audacity. Then you can edit the image as a sound, because audacity now reads your file as a sound. It usually sound like static, so the fascinating element is to export it back to an image again.
>pic related
But this is where it in my opinion gets really interesting.
It's pretty obvious, that images are usually manipulated differently compared to sound. It's impossible to apply a phaser to a picture, and likewise, you can't do to a sound, as you would to a picture.
Except you can. If it's possible to create this messed up result by merely bass boosting it
>pic related again
then what possibilities couldn't there be to manipulate sound
with ms paint or photoshop?
I'm going to use this thread to experiment with the possibilities. To get a sound directly to image, I simply create a "canvas", a big white picture of nothing but white, import to audacity, throw my sound into the project, export it, messes with the image, import it again, and listen.
It could be possible, that I only discover how to make static or fuck up the sound quality, but I'm still very excited about this. If have any ideas of what I should do, go ahead and post. I will upload everything, I finds noteworthy.
FM synthesis general
I've been playing with Dexed and struggling to come up with nice sounding patches. I'm not even sure what a lot of the parameters do, even after looking at presets. I have experience with simpler VSTs like Fruity DX10 and FMDrive, but I don't understand what I'm doing with this one.
After trying to find a manual or some other form of documentation, I've come up empty. Anyone have any advice?
I need electric guitar recommendations
I'm buying an electric guitar, folks. I don't really play it, but I know how to, so with lots of takes and alternative tuning I can pull off the most basic stuff for my first album. I plan on recording it; it's not for practice or anything. So it needs to sound good enough to record.
I have pretty large hands, and my budget is about $800 for both the amp and the guitar, but I can do more if it's absolutely necessary. The genre is a melodic, folksy kind of rock with punk elements. See Titus Andronicus for comparison. That's all I know. I'm a complete noob.
How much will buying a used guitar affect the sound?
Pic related; googled "electric guitar."
Thanks in advance.
I'm looking for a "distance emulator" plugin, in lack of better words. Is there such a thing?
I googled it, and all I could find was a variety of reverb plugins. I'm not looking for reflections, I'm looking for refraction, something that replicates, through algorithms, how a sound changes depending on how far away from the listener the source is, independent of walls (so outside on an endless field I guess). If there's a wetness control that isn't 100% by default, I don't think it's what I'm looking for.
Does anyone here know of such a plugin, or a way to replicate it without using a special distance plugin?
Also, if short distance (>50 meters) makes less of a difference besides volume/intensity, then I guess what I'm looking for is a way to simulate sound coming from around a corner, maybe passing a few obstacles and such.
I realize no one has posted here in a few days, so I might just be talking to myself here...
Pic might be related.
/musicprod/ can you help me?
I am trying to learn how to sing...I'm aware I am not good at the moment
but can someone at least get some comments on this?

Drum machines
I would like to record lo-fi noise/ambient black metal demos and I want a proper sounding drum machine. I really dig the old Thy Catafalque drum machine sound. I also like Pyha's Haunted House LP guitar sound.
I am a total pleb when it comes to softwares, or anything related to this board, that's why I'm here.
BEGGINER MUSIC COMPOSITION WORKFLOW
Some guy redirect me here.
I'm really new into music, but I have read the basics of music theory and can understand a song structure.
But I'm confused where to go about composing basic catchy songs for games (I need some songs for my unity demoes) like those rpg maker songs or SNES songs like the ones from FF.
I don't need nothing complex, but I'm lost when seeing a blank score.
I just wanna know if there's some begginer safe workflow.
Something like this in drawing:
- Make the stick figure
- Check the proportions
- Put the anatomy
- Add perspective
- Add garments like cloth and hair.
- Add values and planes
- Add color
I need something like that, but for music composition.
Many thanks.

Help with GNU+Linux
Is there any semi-proffesional way to make music on GNU+Linux? I don't have the cash for Bitwig or Tracktion, and Bitwig doesn't support plugins anyways. LMMS is awful, bloated and slow. Ardour is pretty good, but it's MIDI system is horrible, and isn't really complete. Reaper and Sunvox are both really primitive, and they lack any plugin support. Should I install a Windows VM, or should I use Wine? WineAsio seemed really handy, I may use that. What do other GNU+Linux musicians do?

Studio Monitors
Hey /musicprod/
My makeshift studio moniters finally fried themselves so I've decided to buy an actual pair of studio moniters. I want something good but cheap, so far I've got my eye on a pair of KRK Rokit5 g3's but I wanted to see what you guy's thought. I'm looking preferably between the $200-$250AUD mark so nothing too fancy.
Not sure if this is the right board to ask about this. I want to use some something to change my voice a bit. I'm not singing, I just want to dub a video of people talking into my language, but the people in the vid are men and I am a little grill. I'm just curious if there is something or a combination of things I could use to easily change some recordings of my voice, yet sound natural. I have tried a couple voice changer programs and they sound robotic. I tried editing the pitch on audacity but it doesn't really sound genuine either. Any ideas?

Ardour > your DAW
Your DAW a shit. I've used Steinberg Cubase and Ableton live, and neither can compare to Ardour. It incorporates all of the best elements from other popular DAWs, such as the FL-syle editor, Abelton's audio manipulation, and plenty of Cubase standards. It's even fully FLOSS. VSTs seem to work pretty well, although I haven't tried to install Serum or Massive yet. General Ardour thread.
Sounds that make you jump/put you on edge
hey i've been having this problem whenever I try to make silent hill type pieces, what do you need to do to a sound to make it jump out and scare you in a mix, I suppose it's supposed to be louder and I think it helps when it's off rhythm a bit (to be less expected) but is there something else i'm missing? any pointers would be appreciated
Writing arrangement using virtual instruments
Does anyone else who writes acoustic music draw out everything in a piano roll first, mix the artificial song and then replicate it with real instruments? Does this work? Because I've written my entire album using virtual instruments because I haven't had an opportunity to record anything. It could be a bad way to go at it though. Thoughts?
Layered Claps/Good Samples
I've been experimenting a lot with melbourne bouce recently and there is one element that is really annoying me, layered claps…I can't seem to make or find any good ones, I've watched a few videos and lurked a few forums and the main thing I keep hearing is "Find good samples" So I was wondering if you guys know any good samples or sample packs for creating layers claps. I've got most of vengeance, Leviathan and Xfer and there really doesn't seem to be very many samples there that are good for the layered claps I'm looking for.
For reference I'm trying to make claps similar to this one:

Techniques to EQing and Compression
i've only ever used a compressor, or rather, noticed its impact when i sidechain it. what does it actually do if i use it on just the track by itself? i feel as though just increasing the gain of my track would cause the same effect. i'm probably stupid for saying that, but i'm just stuck on it.
also, how common is it to make pockets with your EQ for one track, based on another? if i have 4 tracks, do i make 3 packets on each track using 3 EQs that are in tune with the clarity of each of the other tracks?

>can play piano sonatas and symphonies with imagination alone
>can improve shit-tier songs
>can predict a catchy songs' chorus and etc from first time hearing it
>can predict how the drums beat
>can remember songs by listening once if it's good and not shity (like most of Mozart's work)
>can retain fast and long dictations into memory from trolling professor longer than anyone else in class by remembering the tone
My story:
When I was a little elementary kid we used to have a radio in our home and my sis always listens to top ten songs and watches MTV afterwards. Maybe it's a strong factor that influenced me on becoming an earworm and a music theorist.
Listening to songs while working bombards and distracts my brain too much. I cant concentrate into doing anything while listening and programming, analyzing or answering tests. My mind seems to be at 'full throttle' whenever I hear a song like it's analyzing a very hard math problem passively. One time I couldn't answer my exam when our faggot and bored high school teacher played some of his favorite normie pop love songs and whats even worse is that it's cringey (some classm8 started singing it). It's so unprofessional but I took my exam outside of the room.
TL;DR
Whenever I hear a song, I dont interpret the sound by default. Its the emotion that my brain decodes and if that emotion is genuine or shit. It feels like my brain is most powerful with auditory memory although I used to be an artist without any interest in music.

FL Studio Help
So, I'm pretty new to FL Studio I've learned a bit from just messing around on it. There's one problem though. I've created a drum pattern on the sequencer that I am satisfied with, but when I am trying to record a synth to go along with it, it records the drum track along with the synth making it sound like the drums were recorded twice. I am using FL Studio 11 by the way. Also, I have an M-Audio Oxygen 49 connected to it via usb. Any help will be appreciated.
Music Gear
Hello /musicprod/
Anybody here plays Guitar?
I've been looking for a good new amp lately that I can use for recording and getting some nice sounds.
So far I've pretty much narrowed it down to two amplifiers, they're both Vox.
AC4C1 and AC4TV
Now they're both great, but I get the feeling the AC4C1 has a sort of heavier sound so to speak in comparison to the AC4TV, which I really like and I honestly think the added Gain, Bass, Treble knobs can get me to quite a few places (The TV only has Volume, Tone and Output knobs, Output one switching between 1/4,1 and 4 watts). It also looks pretty and comes in Red.
The only problem I see is that I really absolutely love the fuzzy nature of the way the TV sounds when being pushed and mostly when turning down on the Tone knob.
Also I've heard the AC4TV has a better clean sound in comparison.
Anyone here knows about them, tried them? Any helpful tips or comments? We could make this a general gear thread too I guess.
What are the best VSTs to have for orchestral composition?
I've had FL studios 11 for a couple of years now, but only recently have I had time to actually compose without wanting to destroy everything thanks to my previous work environment.
Now that I'm getting started, which VSTs do you guys recommend I get for use? I'm an orchestral guy by the way, synth just isn't my thing.

Storytelling
Hey guys.
I just spent ~12 hrs nearly-deaf in the left ear after cleaning my wax. Standard procedure, but I guess I fucked it up this time and clogged it.

OtoMad production
Here is what you need to make an Otomad or Youtube poop.
-Audio track
-Tons of samples for beats, funny sounds or long words that you can distort at command
-Audio program that allows you to insert different tracks on a timeline like Adobe Audition or Audacity
-Imagination and a sense of humour
How get more activity?
So this board is growing pretty nicely, but in order to ensure its survival and self-sufficiency, we need more activity. Even though less activity is probably better in this case, we need a reasonable minimum not to end up like the other dead music production boards. We've already passed their post count, and this board is still very young, so it's a great start. It's looking like this will be the successful board I've been waiting so long for. All we need is a little bit more of activity and we're set.
So how do we effectively advertise for this board?
Just imagine it, an active board dedicated to creating music. I don't know about you guys, but that's exactly what I need. So I encourage you to link to this board in any relevant threads on boards that allow board advertising.

Calling out to DJs (this falls under music production, right?)
Hey guys, I really need some quick help. Basically I'm a DJ, but I've only ever DJ'd from my laptop. I've just been hired for a job using pic related (or similar) which uses USBs.
I don't have physical access to this type of deck until the day of my job and need to know if it's possible to mix using this deck linked to my laptop (and serato) instead of just using a USB. As well has how it works whilst linked to a laptop if possible.
