I'm buying an electric guitar, folks. I don't really play it, but I know how to, so with lots of takes and alternative tuning I can pull off the most basic stuff for my first album. I plan on recording it; it's not for practice or anything. So it needs to sound good enough to record.

I have pretty large hands, and my budget is about $800 for both the amp and the guitar, but I can do more if it's absolutely necessary. The genre is a melodic, folksy kind of rock with punk elements. See Titus Andronicus for comparison. That's all I know. I'm a complete noob.

How much will buying a used guitar affect the sound?

Pic related; googled "electric guitar."

Thanks in advance.

You could try pick up a Gibson Les Paul, it sounds typical suited to the like of your music genre. If you don't like the sounds mainly because it's unfitting for your taste, you could look for other guitars such as Fender Mastang, Gibson SG (expansive), Fender Telecaster, Fender Strat (Jazzy) and hear it for yourself whether you like any of these.

I recognize most of these names, so the local music stores will probably have one I can try out myself. Problem is that I can expect the price to be twice what it would be in America if I go there. I guess I'll tell them I'll come back after I've made my decision, while I'll actually just buy a used one online. :^)

Thanks a lot.
