Hello /musicprod/

Anybody here plays Guitar?

I've been looking for a good new amp lately that I can use for recording and getting some nice sounds.

So far I've pretty much narrowed it down to two amplifiers, they're both Vox.

AC4C1 and AC4TV

Now they're both great, but I get the feeling the AC4C1 has a sort of heavier sound so to speak in comparison to the AC4TV, which I really like and I honestly think the added Gain, Bass, Treble knobs can get me to quite a few places (The TV only has Volume, Tone and Output knobs, Output one switching between 1/4,1 and 4 watts). It also looks pretty and comes in Red.

The only problem I see is that I really absolutely love the fuzzy nature of the way the TV sounds when being pushed and mostly when turning down on the Tone knob.

Also I've heard the AC4TV has a better clean sound in comparison.

Anyone here knows about them, tried them? Any helpful tips or comments? We could make this a general gear thread too I guess.

Also, will an SM57 with the Xu2 add-on for analog to USB conversion be good enough for recording the amp and vocals separately?

I wanted a couple of mics to do it all together but it seems with the extra add-on and all it would go way over my budget.

Why would you need/want to do it all together?

Just personal preference, I wanted to force myself to play it right on the recordings, give it a sort of live feel.

What's a good budget Sound Interface?

I read people recommend Focusrite cheaper stuff but apparently their drivers aren't very good.

I have a 2i2 and it's been perfect. Highly recommend, wouldn't dare go any cheaper. It's the best price:quality ratio you'll find (and I never had a single driver issue on Windows 8/Reaper x64). Same with an SM57, those things are indestructible, just be sure you spend $99 on it, anything cheaper is probably a knock off fake.

Either of those amps seem great, especially for home recording. Just be sure what you get is a tube amp not some solid state digital bullshit (opinion bias, but I've played guitar for over 15 years now and that's just how I feel… for stuff where you actually care about your guitar tone… if it's cheesy dragonforce metal, then I don't think it really matters).

Does yours make audio distorted and weird when you start up your PC until you unplug it and plug it back in? Mine does. It's annoying.

Yeah I think that may be a flaw with our USB ports or something. Never got to the bottom of it. My friend has one too on a computer we built last year and it doesn't do that at all.

Weird. But it's not really a problem, just plug out and plug in.

What's a little bit disappointing is the drivers. The max buffer length is small and underruns seem to happen much more easily. But that too is easily fixed with asio4all.
