I do a music degree, and have done courses in music recording and production, you have access to a lot of awesome resources such as using studio mixing consoles and expensive equipment. Also learn't about certain basic properties about EQing, Compression, Effects etc.
Most of my own stuff when it comes to production I have self taught though, I am terrible at explaining things and how they work, but those courses were really just a good kickstarter.
Having experience in classical music theory, songwriting and performance are paramount to be perfectly honest, if you really want to make a work of art. As we have a shitload of hipsters and such these days, much of their creation falls horribly short.
And you should learn to play many different instruments, theory will make it easier and once you learn how to play one instrument others will be easier.
