Does anyone else who writes acoustic music draw out everything in a piano roll first, mix the artificial song and then replicate it with real instruments? Does this work? Because I've written my entire album using virtual instruments because I haven't had an opportunity to record anything. It could be a bad way to go at it though. Thoughts?

yes. it works just fine. How do you think people wrote music before DAW's? they would write music and imagine how it sounded in their head. then we got player pianos, then we got sequencers and samplers, then we got DAWs.

works just fine. why wouldn't it? the only thing is you have to also be able to mix it properly, for instance you wouldn't use a VST Piano to represent a guitar, it occupies a different frequency range and response.

Presumably you wouldn't do any mixing till all your live instruments had been recorded. if you do some kind of pre-mix before recording, that's your mistake.

I mean, that's the problem. I don't just store the arrangement to remember it, I make it sound as close to the real thing as possible. They all basically sound 90% real and finished now even though no real instruments are playing. The problems could arise when trying to replicate the sound, feel and timber of a particular guitar solo, for example, and realizing I can't really make it sound the same. The worst thing that can happen is that I need to mix everything drastically different, but I don't want to do that. The reason I mix and polish my VST drafts is because I want to get as close as possible before recording, and I have achieved a somewhat unique sound that I want to preserve. So I'm not just talking about arrangement here (misleading subject and unclear OP, sry), but the sound and feel of it all.

Also, I'm not a guitarist. I'm gonna have a 5/10 guitarist play on this album. Do you think he'll be able to replicate a virtual guitar easily? Or do electric guitars sound so different from one another that he'll need like 20 different guitars? For example, have you heard the "rock guitar" from the Kontakt factory library? How hard would that be to replicate closely? I'm afraid I've already shat on my shoulder by leaving little room for change.

Solos are not meant to be replicated anyway

u wat

>write down melody in piano roll

>replicate with real instrument

How is this not meant to happen?

it could be meant to happen, or not. It really just depends on the idea and/or willingness to do so. I personally think it's a great idea.

not really, kind of combination between piano roll and music sheet.

i just record on the fly yo

But I spend countless hours on arrangement. It's film music style folk rock, which means big, pompous and catchy. So I can't just record on the fly, yo. It doesn't work in my genre. But I guess I'll go with the replicating VSTs method. It's not just the melody that needs replicating, though (that's no problem at all), I also have to match the sound of the virtual instruments to preserve the feel. I've decided I'll just record the ones I manage to replicate well and keep the rest VST.

e51a42 No.952

Yes. It's decided. Part real, part VST. Thanks, you guys, for replies. :^>

not sure going just one way or the other is the correct way to think

try them all with variations and everything

I record on the fly also, you can usually export the repitiore to Sibelius and it will turn a stem to music notes, but you must pull the notes into certain lengths and quantize them in order for them to come out accurately or you will have wierdly placed demi semi quavers and rests in funny places making it annoying for the instrumentalist playing it. I am fairly shit at writing on manuscript to be honest but it is worth it to at least learn how it works.

This is Art Farmer and most of us at the music school have a tough time reading something like this for examination. IE a general idea of what most of us need to be able to do.

Can you elaborate? I don't really know what you're saying. I could export a piano roll arrangement to notation easily, and I know several people skilled enough to simply draw the notation for me, should any of the musicians not prefer to just listen to the melody and replicate it.
