Milkytracker is good, but only for chiptune. If OP is looking for any amount of synthesizing he won't be impressed by Milkytracker.

You think you want a sequencer, but you'll make better things with a DAW in the end. I whole-heartedly recommend Ardour. If you try that and still want a sequencer, install mnt-produce.
