Some improvements to this that I want to include on a rewrite:

>bucket pasteurization

Can often sterilize rather than pasteurize, leaving you exposed to contaminants taking hold of your substrate before the mycellium can fully colonize. Either a proper pasteurization or a more detailed bucket tek needs to be included.

>spawning the tub

A note on leaving a small amount of substrate, unmixed with the spawn, should be added to this tek for something to cover the exposed rye berries / kernels with. Otherwise, again, you run the risk of contaminants taking hold, this time of the exposed berries.

Did enjoy the tek and the effort you put into though. I was heartbroken last night to come back from a 3 day trip expecting pins, only to find green mold had begun colonizing my tub. Just constructive criticism for other noobies like me following this tek :-)

DIY erlenmeyer flask for sterilizing (pressure cooking/ autoclaving) and pouring agar? I have a whiskey bottle, but it's corked, so idk if it will work. Any links or ideas fellas?

From what I'm finding it seems the standard DIY method is to just stuff the neck of the bottle with polyfill, then put tin foil over it. Just seemed to ez! I'll be back with results l8r, mycofags

I'm finally getting some work done.

I just started soaking wild bird seed that I plan on doing g2g transfers with.I'm following the grow videos posted on myco.

Im going to let the seed soak for 4 hours and then pressure cook them.

Ill update when I start the PC process.

Did the casing a few days ago.

I've been kind of busy but here are a few pics.

I use jiffy mix for my casing.

I bring it to field capacity and pasteurize for an hour .

Make sure your temps stay between 140 and 160 for an hour.

Let the casing cool to room temp and apply.

Will update with fruits

Hi /myco/,

Can someone tell me the materials I should buy if I want to grow oyster mushrooms and various gourmet cultures?

Like scalpel, innoculation loops, etc.I'm having a tough time finding a "beginners equipment" list online.

I want to, like I said, grow gourmet mushrooms, but would also like to see if I can find cool species in the woods and try to get spore prints from them and grow them at home.

I have a very limited budget. I can't be buying expensive things like flow hoods or huge pressure cookers right now. Maybe in the future. For now I'd like a noob kit, to put it that way.

Thanks a million, guys. The video is unrelated

 No.205

What's an SAB? Can't find anything online.

Do any of you guys have specific jar types that you like to use?

Still trying to see if there is a "beginner" kit out there. I'm going to experiment on my own for a while on the cheap, but I'd also like to know where I can get the stuff and a small list for when I will need it.

 No.207

>>205

Still air box.

The jar you use depends on the substrate you use. If its not crumbly, like brown rice flour for PF cakes, then you need a wide mouth jar so that the whole substrate can slide right out. If its easily separable, like rye berries, then it doesn't matter.

One way to make agar plates last a little longer is to wrap parafilm around the edges of the plate and stack them upside down so moisture droplets don't fall on your pure culture. Don't know if this has been suggested yet.

Just poured a few MEA petri dishes.

I'll be adding AA+ spores from Sporeworks in a few days.

I like to watch my plates for contamination before I use them.

Ill update when I add spores.

The way I prep agar is

>21 grams agar mix

>500 ml water

>Pressure cook 45 mins

Let the agar cool an hour and a half in the pc before you pour your plates

What is /myco/'s approach to sterilization techniques and keeping the workplace clean and free of contaminants?

How lazy are you OR to what crazy measures do you go? What kind of working space do you use?

4 posts omitted. Click reply to view.

 No.232

>>226

Well the idea of a flow hood is to create a sterile, still air space for you to work in. Which in something like grain spawn is unnecessary as you make a sterile "habitat" inside of your jars after you pressure cook them.

A flow hood comes in handy if you plan on doing g2g grain to grain transfers. As you'll have to open your jars exposing the sterile habitat you created during pressure cooking, to open air and whatever contams are floating in it. But with a flow hood the air inside should be sterile or atleast more so than the air outside of the flow hood making contams floating inside of your jars less likely.

So flow hoods come in handy whenever you need a sterile envirement to work in. Which with alot of methods nowadays don't require it. Grain spawn, both in jars and spawn bags, and I believe BFR cakes all work by making a sterile habitat in their respected container for your mycelium to get a grow and when using a syring as long as it has been properly sterilised should not infringe on that sterile habitat inside of the jar/bag or whatever.

 No.233

>>232

Typo near the end hope you get what i what I meant

 No.240

>>232

Okokok, I see. So there's nothing a flow hood can do that a SAB can't also accomplish?

 No.241

>>240

Is there any point then in tech'ing up to a flow hood? I can make for under $100 and I've been considering adopting that as a new project.

 No.244

>>241

No,I do agar in my SAB and everything is clean.

Watch the videos on the video thread.

Being sterile is more for spawn creation/agar.

Watch the videos man,it has everything but monotubs and the sticky has the monotub tek.

Do any of you massive mycofaggots have exp with these?

I parboiled (boiled in salt and vinegar to remove the intoxicating effects) some last night. The taste is overhyped, imo. I did notice however that I slept exceptionally well last night, which is one of the intoxicating effects (so I probably didn't boil thoroughly enough, I never did change the water).

 No.208

Yes. Took them twice (8g each time). I ate the caps straight, after they had been dried. Experienced two discrete sets of symptoms. Set 1 began roughly 45 minutes after ingestion and lasted for 2.5 hours. Set two began after I vomited a couple of times and persisted for 6 hours.

1. Dizziness, extreme nausea, vomiting, vertigo, flushed cheeks, lethargy

2. Buzzing sensations in ears, eyes, and on skin, combined with closed eye hallucinations, and disassociation. My brain was emptying all of its thoughts in front of my eyes stream-of-consciousness style. This kind of experience could be very troubling if the user is not familiar with meditation and letting go of thoughts/feelings.

The comedown was the opposite of an alcohol hangover. My mind was extremely clear and peaceful and I felt physically great for the next 12 hours.

I want to do them again but I can't bring myself to eat them because the taste/texture is now strongly linked to vomiting in my brain.

 No.178[Reply]

Tried shrooms for the first time last night and posted on /b/, was told I should do a trip report on here once I come down.

Bought 6 capsules (0.5g each). Decided to smoke a decent bit of weed before hand because I had heard it can intensify the trip more. It wasn't until about 1g that I really started to feel anything. I realised I was laughing much more at small things (was watching the Social Network and couldn't stop laughing at the part where Mark gets the note saying "u dick") however I wasn't getting too many visuals. Eventually on 1g I found it fairly difficult to concentrate on the movie as I was becoming more and more interested in the sounds and the music, and also colours started to become much more brighter to me, so I turned it off and decided to listen to music

At 1.5g, I almost felt as if the walls were slightly breathing when I was looking at my laptop, colours were far more brighter and music felt as if I could 'feel' it in a certain sense, I was also noticing sounds which I hadn't really noticed when sober when I was listening to music (mostly listening to Boards of Canada and holy shit was it amazing). I decided to look out my window and when looking at street lights, the longer I looked at them, the brighter they became, something also felt a bit off when looking at trees, almost as if they were swaying to an extent, or maybe melting, couldn't really tell. At 2g, I really started to feel things much more intensely now. I had my small lamp on a very low light, and the light it gave off looked like a very nice warm orange colour. At this point I definitely could feel as if the walls were breathing, trees also looked the same way as well. I lay on my floor listening to music and just felt at complete ease with everything. When I closed my eyes I could see some crazy kaleidoscopes, almost as if I was flying through tunnels of them. When I was on 2.5g, I really started to think about life, and how all people do their entire life is arrange things into place, I also started to think about how we coincide with nature, etc etc, just general shit like that.

Eventually I took my last one (at 3g now) and I continued to have these amazing thoughts and really feel the music, when looking at my ceiling I was experiencing some serious kaleidoscPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

No problem. I might start growing them in the future, but any time soon I most likely won't be. Shrooms are the first psychedelics I've tried, so I hope to try acid next, but of the drugs I've tried, shrooms have definitely been my favourite

 No.167

OK, basically did this:

1. Got a screw-on mason jar, filled it with dry used coffee grounds (free from coffee shop)

2. I then put this coffee into a glass container, put plastic wrap over it, and microwaved it on high for 7 minutes. It was incredibly hot.

3. While everything was microwaving, I sterilized everything with 70% alcohol. This includes the knife I used for cutting, little bowls for holding the stem butts, a spoon, the mason jar, coffee filters, and a rubber band.

4. Once the coffee was done microwaving, I let it cool until it was warm to the touch. I then filled it up in increments by putting in a few spoonfuls at a time. Between spoonfuls, I would cut off the stem butts from the shiitake mushrooms and put a few between the "layers" of coffee grounds. I rupped some of them up a bit on purpose.

5. I realized the coffee grounds were a bit dry. I added like 10-20% of the weight of the coffee grounds in WATER that I had boiled in the microwave to it after it had cooled down to being warm.

6. I took TWO coffee filters and also sterilized and made them damp with rubbing alcohol ( isopropyl 70%, like before). I put them both over the mason jar and then screwed on the metal cap part of the mason jar (which was also sterilized).

7. I then fit a (sterilized) rubber band over the bottom to keep the coffee filters from flapping around.

8. I put the jar in my bathroom in the corner. This is a very clean bathroom.

Rate how stupid :D

Hey guys, I fucked up a grow a while ago and now I'm left with 1.5mL left in a syringe of the Penis Envy variety. I really don't wanna lose my only remaining access to it, what's the SAFEST way to ensure I can preserve this culture? I don't want to run out.

 No.97

Cap it and put it in a ziplock bag.zip locks are sterile until ypu open them so do it in a SAB.you can put the bag in a fridge and they will be goos for awhile.I've used spores I had in the fridge that were a year old.

 No.106

Ty based anon. I'm just scared cuz I have so little left, one single contam and I could be out of an entire variety. Is agar just as sterile as any other method? I know with oysters, using coffee grounds makes it a much cleaner grow; things just don't like to grow in it, except oyster mycelium. I'm just looking for the most contam-proof, surefire method available.

I just made my SAB and I've been watching the vids you posted, I'm almost to the agar one. Great stuff, I had heard of the series before but always overlooked and undervalued it.
