Okay just to explain some bullshit from the news to you guys and how fucked Gawker is, lets go through some true/false statements
1. Gawker had the right of freedom of the press and this ruling infringes on that right.
FALSE. The reason Gawker was able to be sued was that they put up the Sex Video of Hogan and profited from it. They did try to argue "Freedom of the Press", however as they were acting as effectively a "porn site" by being the ones to put up the video, their now acting as a pornographer and not a news organization. Freedom of the Press is still a very real thing, However the idea the press can commit a literal crime and then claim they can do it because it's "news" isn't going to fly.
2) In appeal the money is going to be reduced.
Unlikely. Jury based large some awards do often get reduced on appeal, but those are usually in cases where it's difficult to asses the damage done due to lack of records and some consideration is taken for whatever measures are done to minimize the damages (Ie, an apology)
Unfortunately for Gawker there's a long paper trail for how much that Hulk Hogan sex tape was worth to them. The $500,000 they paid for it, the Google reports for how high their traffic went up, rubrics on how much their ad revenue went up… that's all fucking them right now. Then factor in that they did nothing to minimize the damages, no apology to Hulk Hogan, refusing a court order to take down the sex tape, no show of remorse. They got zip to fall back on now.
3) Gawker's legal strategy was always to win in appeal
I really doubt it. Their lawyer seemed to realize that the act of putting up the sex tape and claiming it was news was a lost cause, but pressed on anyways. He was probably thinking he'd lose on that count and try and win on the others, and he did an admirable job trying.
Gawker was probably hoping to lose only on 1 count and then make an argument for the money to be greatly reduced if the jury awarded the full sum. That didn't happen. As a result they are fucked.
4) Gawker is going away forever
No. The play Gawker has now is to file an appeal to buy some time and then figure out the kind of bankruptcy protection they want. From there, they are going to have to decide on selling some of their sites like Jezebel to try and raise the cash, turn the whole company to Hulk Hogan, or just run a bankrupcy sale themselves and see who buys what of the Gawker empire. In the end parts may end up owned by other media empire.
There's also the possibility Gawker could raise the money. There might be a bank dumb enough to give them a business loan to cover their loses, or they could try selling shares in their company. I doubt they can pull it off, but it's a possibility.

Well that's the thing, it really depends on how they go about things. Its up to Gawker how they raise the money and possibly file for some form of Bankruptcy protection. All the court cares about is if they come up with the cash and make reasonable arrangements with Hulk Hogan.
Like if Gawker is just broken up and sold off, the debt from the lawsuit shouldn't normally follow it to the new owners. Denton and the other fellow found liable however, that debt is continuing to follow them till they pay it or die.
However their control over their own destruction only goes so far as they cooperate with the court. They need to come up with the cash or give Hogan a full list of all of their assets and a plan of how they will pay him if they can't come up with the cash.
