Sikhs step back into the Medieval era
On Tuesday in Punjab, the Sikh homeland, the state assembly passed a bill under which those hurting religious sentiments of the Sikhs will receive punishment up to life imprisonment. The previous law had a penalty of three years maximum.
During the debate, one of the Sikh leaders Charanjit Singh Channi had argued that the law should protect all religions from sacrilege.
The move comes after last year's events in which violent protests occurred in Punjab after the desecration of some copies of the Sikh holy book.
Little progress has been made in the investigation into those cases. Yet, perhaps to cover up its administrative failures, the Punjab government deemed it necessary to enact a draconian new law.
Punjab’s sacrilege legislation is akin to Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, which have led to the ascendance of theocracy and religious violence in Pakistan. That, in turn, has fatally weakened Pakistan’s democratic institutions.
