Just ahead of the 2016 presidential election, HBO announced its plans to carry a nightly news show courtesy of Vice News, called “Vice News Tonight.” That show is now being canceled, which puts an end to HBO’s seven-year-long relationship with the new media brand Vice Media, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter out on Monday.

HBO and Vice had expanded their relationship over the years, with a 2013 deal for a weekly news magazine, “Vice,” plus multiple documentary specials and, later, the launch of the nightly news program.

The goal with “Vice News Tonight” was to reach a younger audience that had grown “increasingly skeptical of daily broadcast news,” Vice explained in its announcement at the time of launch.

The media company argued that the nightly news format hadn’t changed in roughly 60 years, but the way younger viewers consumed information has. They no longer watch nightly news out of obligation, but because the show has earned their time and attention, the company said.

The program grew to reach an audience of more than 500,000 viewers per episode and won five Emmys, but still faced a ton of competition in the broader news market.

The show also meant to appeal to younger viewers who have cut ties with traditional pay TV. But today, these viewers have a number of ways to stream the news — including through live TV internet services like YouTube TV, Sling TV, or Hulu with Live TV, for example, as well as via the streaming platforms themselves, like within Roku’s The Roku Channel or dedicated apps for media players like Apple TV. They can also now get the news through other dedicated news streaming services, like CBSN, CBS All Access, NBC News Now, Cheddar or even on social networks like Snapchat.

Today, news streamer NewsON announced it was coming to Amazon Fire TV, as another example.

In addition, THR points out that “Vice News Tonight” was more of a passion project of former HBO CEO Richard Plepler, who left earlier this year following AT&T’s acquisition of WarnerMedia.

Along with the cancellation of “Vice News Tonight,” Vice Media news chief Josh Tyrangiel will depart at the end of the month, a report from The Wrap notes. Meanwhile, former New York Post CEO and publisher Jesse Angelo will come on board as president of global news and entertainment.

“Jesse is a news pioneer and has built an incredible career by successfully expanding the world of publishing into wider forms of distribution through a multitude of platforms, including digital, social, audio and television,” Vice Media CEO Nancy Dubuc, said in a statement. “With him joining our executive team, Vice’s strategic growth plan for news will begin and complement wider partnership opportunities already underway. We’ve had a great run with our friends at HBO and now we’re excited to launch our news products on new platforms, solidifying our place as one of the most trusted brands out there, drawing the youngest audience of anyone in hard news.”

The cancellation follows layoffs of 10% of Vice staff in February and the hiring of Katie Drummond, previously deputy editor at Medium, as SVP of Vice Digital in March.

Though “Vice News Tonight” may be over, it’s not the end of Vice’s streaming platform presence. The company is reportedly working on a new show for Hulu, a report a few months ago said. That deal hasn’t yet been announced. And Vice is shopping a daily news show to other networks and platforms, THR says.

“Vice News Tonight” will end in September when the contract is up.

>Context: article from May 18

There is a report circulating that reporters from Vice, Lani Levine and Elle Reeve, allegedly broke into the home of Jim Watkins, the current owner of 8chan. Watkins is located in the Philippines.

The news comes courtesy o fa tweet from the 8chan Twitter account, which delivered images of Reeve and Levine outside of the home of Watkins on May 18th, 2019. According to the account the duo entered into Watkins’ bedroom but were then ordered off of the property.

As noted in the tweet, both Reeve and Levine have protected their tweets.

Additionally there are no archives on the Wayback Machine for Lani Levine, so you can’t check to see what she was up to just before May 18th, 2019. There are archives of her account on May 18th, but she had already protected her account by that point.

The most recent Google caches are from back on March 27th, 2019. They don’t really reveal much about her current activities just before the 8chan tweet dropped.

The same applies to Elle Reeve, who’s Google cache is also from back on March 27th, 2019.

Reeve does have entries on the Wayback Machine, though. Here latest snapshot before locking the account is from May 8th, 2019.

Nothing from the snapshot has anything to do with Watkins or any trips to the Philippines.

However, the image evidence makes it difficult to deny. I did reach out to Reeve to ask about the situation and if she responds the article will be updated with that response.

As to why they were allegedly snooping around Watkins’ house likely has to do with a special that Vice was supposed to be working on. The 8chan account notes that they wanted to get out ahead of any possible footage that might be used in the Vice or HBO documentary.

This comes shortly after a barrage of articles have been attacking and targeting Jim Watkins and the 8chan imageboard because the Christchurch, New Zealand shooter would sometimes use 8chan.

The media have been pressuring for the censorship of 8chan, even though the shooter live-streamed the entire massacre on Facebook.

Nevertheless, ISPs in the Philippines have been blocking resident access to 8chan and certain other sites.

This is all part of a brisk move by tech giants, media outlets, and the government to enforce more widespread censorship across the net in the wake of the Christchurch shooting.

As for Elle Reeve and Lani Levine, we’ll have to wait to find out what fate befalls the Vice duo, assuming anything happens at all.

>host a website that has free speech.

<free speech posers b & e you thinking you're evil for it

vice is phoney opposition. it's full of spies and government agents. i admit the racism here get a bit heavy but if we cencore it then it's not free speech.

As much as I hate this website, I'm glad Vice got fucked over.

so in other words, HBO's decision head absolutely nothing to do with the false allegation of breaking and entering. (even Ron's 8chan tweet admitted they were allowed into the house by a housekeeper, and led to Jim's bedroom, so there was no 'breaking and entering' after all, hence no criminal charges)

at least you tried to make these two stories seem connected, although you clearly failed, as always.

>source article never mentions 8chan at all

The reason HBO dropped the show it's because the show sucks.

>The goal with “Vice News Tonight” was to reach a younger audience that had grown “increasingly skeptical of daily broadcast news,”

So their ingenious solution to the problem of their audiences realizing they're peddling bullshit is to pour bubblegum flavor on the bullshit. Brilliant!

You seem to think 8chan is a 'corporation'. Calling Jim Watkins the 'CEO of 8chan' is like calling this guy the 'vice president of a public restroom'

so far, the only places that the 'vice reporters intrude on Jim' story has been told was:

-in a tweet by Ron, where he clearly explained that there was no 'breaking and entering', and they were allowed into the residence

-in Jim's embarrassing YouTube video, which was filled with exaggerations and hyperbole, discrediting anything Jim had to say

and that's simply not good enough.

My girlfriend seemed to like the Vice News for some unexplainable reason. I had to sit and suffer through it four or five times, and i kept asking her if she would please change the channel. It's crap.

the reason that HBO dropped the contract was due to simple ratings. when a show only has 500,000 viewers, that's NOT a success.

they always had shitty "journalistic" practices, but the behavior last month crossed the line. everybody at Vice locked their twitter accounts right after the 8chan break-in allegations, so the incident had to have had some weight in HBO's decision to cut their funding and deplatform them

>had to have some weight

>everybody locked their twitter accounts

>Jim's embarrassing YouTube video

Definite dementia evident there

What was the goal of the vice raid? An anti-pedo story?

>Though “Vice News Tonight” may be over, it’s not the end of Vice’s streaming platform presence. The company is reportedly working on a new show for Hulu

I don't get stuff like this. We don't have money for it so let's fund something else. B S

get any dirt of any kind, no doubt

Alabama signed a bill into law that says all child sex offenders must be chemically castrated, but that is proven not to really work. Killcen can't get an erection either, but that hasn't stopped him from being sexually attracted to 11 year old girls. As long as he has hands, he can still insert foreign objects into them. I say they need to also amputate his arms.
