The reason behind the Militia is that we would be very low on manpower. We need people digging out tunnels and bunkers and building structures. We need the farmers and welders. But we also need to be able to raise a security force with just a moment of notice.
As for vehicles, military trucks and jeeps can be bought rather cheaply. I doubt we'd be using them all that often, so we wouldn't have to worry about fuel costs too much.
We can build defensive structures, build traps around our settlement. We can set up machine gun and sniping nests, and also set up mortars.

A 60mm mortar is a great static defense. For "bombarding niggers", you'd want a 120mm mortar, which is extremely impractical. However a 60mm mortar is man portable, can be set up by a competent team of three in a few minutes, and provide arcs of assplosions out to four thousand yards. It's a very useful tool to have. Especially when we're independent and on our own, late game, because then, we're on our fucking own.

Let me explain to you what war is like, even with small units, since you don't seem to understand. In war, you can't see shit. You'll die from one or two bullets, and you wont know how or why. Bullets never seem to go where you're aiming, and you feel absolutely no connection between the act of firing the gun and the guy falling dead. Most of the time you'll never see an enemy. You're going to be firing thousands upon thousands of bullets into the tree lines, or smoke, or town where enemy soldiers might be. Most soldiers will be lucky to see an enemy most days. if you're even luckier and manage to shoot them, combat takes place at such ranges, that it's completely dehumanized. They're just a fuzzy blur in the distance, and that fuzzy blur either suddenly makes you dead, or you suddenly make it dead, there is no fair exchange. no chest high walls to hide behind. You're just prone, in an field, hoping the bullets continue to fly over you.
If you want a chance of coming out alive, you need machine guns, you need grenades, you need mortars, you need assault rifles, you need combat medics and stretchers and surgical tools. and planes, helicopters, and armored vehicles make things easier.
