Does anyone else think that we should set up radio station for public announcements and news since it will be hard to get an internet connection until we become prosperous?

Yes, obviously.

I am researching FM radio station, they haven't used any of the good numbers so we'd probably just go 148.8 or something

i recall watching a video where a person was able to transmit data, albeit very slowly, from his laptop using a makeshift ham radio.

assuming we don't use an over glossy GUI and files that are unnecessarily large, we should be able to transmit messages over distances through, say a station, with some ease.

Thoughts? Has any one else heard of this?

Well, while slow as shit, I'm sure we can get at least dial-up.

Another option is Loon… But I don't trust Google.

what's loon?

It's a project that serve up internet from balloons. Think about it as a replacement for sattelites, but with far lower latency.

Yes We can build radio towers like these beauties from Far Cry 3.

Yes, definitely.

This is done all the time tbh. Unfortunately it's slow as hell. You're better off with normal, fibre-optic infrastructure.

Alternatively, you could have a large mass of people interconnecting their computers via standard wifi connections, a wifi station in every town connected to each other using microwave arrays.

HAM is better off left as emcomm.

Depends on our budget. It's generally a good idea to have some sort of a radio, though until we have a better idea of the funding we're gonna get, it's worth just leaving plans of this depth as drafts for now.

long-range wifi networks are somewhat easy to set up.

The main problem is having it high enough that there's no obstructions to the beam, which bows out in the middle

Ofc initial outlay for a metal tower to put each antenna on may/may not be pricey, consider many farms have metal windmills which are similar towers

People were actually talking in a /pol/ thread about using Raspberry-Pi's as radio units set on broadcast loops. The new Zero in particular is very cheap.
