It was called both a military cap and explorer cap in the good ole days in Australia.
And in the States it's called a boonie or slouch hat… but those are general names for non-rigid military style hats.
It's known also as an "Aruba" hat even though it has nothing to do with that nation.
But I've seen a lot of explorers and military men use it in old pictures in hot/desert climates alongside the cheesy looking Pith helmet.
