 No.2443

I'm very interested in the differences between Flemish Belgium and the Dutch Netherlands. (excluding walloons and such)

What are the main language and cultural differences between the two? I'm talking more pop-cultural than wooden clogs type shit. What kind of things would a person from one country bring up to make fun of (good-naturedly or not) someone from the other country? Are there touchy subjects between the two groups? What would be the main stereotypes that one would believe of the other?

 No.2444

We have jokes about one another in which the Dutch are stingy and the Flemish are dumb.

I can't think of any touchy subjects though.

We're as differen't from eachother as we differ from every other European country actually. We do consider eachother as distant relatives though.

Is there a "Netherlands character" and another distinct "Belgium character" that a foreigner would observe or is there more of a combined "Dutch character"?

That's belgian

Because the artist and publisher is belgian.

The difference is dutch art tends to be more more modern and less realistic (or even plain absurd). I'll post a few examples.

This one should be instantly recognizable as a depiction of a certain well-known character.

This cartoonist is famous for his filthy style.

This artist makes a living mainly from merchandise, as a result the humor is very bland. Here's a christmas card as an example.

And finally, here's an artist who addresses ongoing political concerns. He's been threatened several times with murder over cartoons that depict muslims. This one was created in 2005, when (if memory serves me correct) the "IAMsterdam" mobile monument was revealed to the public.

They're quite different I'd say, imagining a foreigner's point of view.

Socially, the Dutch tend to be more direct and outgoing while Belgians are generally more reserved, polite maybe.

While the language is quite the same in writing, the spoken language may not sound the same for someone totally unfamiliar with Dutch; the pronunciation is a bit different and the general way of saying basic things can differ a lot.

sound maybe like the difference between the northeast and southeast of the US.

are Dutch considered more sophisticated than belgians?

No, belgians are just dumb.

we use cursewords while the flemish only say 'amai' or 'allee'

oh and weed isn't legal here

well shit...you've got me there.

http://www.royvanrijn.com/blog/2015/02/paper-sizes/

>>2483

I know that the whole 'yeah maaaan, all drugs are legal in Amsterdam..." is an exaggeration.

so google translate says amai is gosh...doesn't offer a word for allee, I'm guessing something like 'golly gee' maybe.

would this indicate that flemish are more prudish? are they more religious perhaps?

The whole dutch thing with swearing I find funny. In a stream I follow of a dutch youth the rules say: Niet schelden met erge scheldwoorden! Niet met Actuele ziektes schelden.

He says every english curse word known to man. I apologized once for writing fuck or something in his chat and he said he didn't care about that. He said the rule is about not saying words like cancer or ebola to anyone. He explained that cancer is a horrible disease that kills people. I can't argue with that but the idea there barely translates to an english speaking mind.

 No.2485

>>2484

English is exactly the same.

Wat ben jij godverdomme een kankerjood!

You are such a god damn cancerous jew!

>>2485

true but you wouldn't be banned from any forum or chatroom in english for saying someone or something is cancerous. it's just not that harsh of a comment in english, certainly nowhere near the top. calling someone a jew probably wouldn't go over well.

probably the two worst swear words in english besides calling someone a nigger are fuck and cunt. my experience is that even young dutch kids use these without a second thought.

when Thor! was 11 or 12 he sang an uncensored version of American Idiot on national television. He clearly said the words 'fuck' and 'faggot' on a children's Ketnetpop show. if that happened in the US the station would be lucky not to get shutdown.

 No.2488

>>2486

Maybe because it was in English and the children wouldn't understand it anyway. But I still find it hard to believe the television show got away with it easily.
