So it occurs to me that setting up certain network games, especially with emulators, normally involves revealing one's IP address. How do we deal with the fact that playing a netgame with someone else invariably demands sacrificing some degree of anonymity? And is that still compatible with an anonymous image board?

This thread is for establishing what the best tools are for working around the various problems associated with playing network games, including security concerns as well as people unable to forward their ports.

I've used Hamachi personally for years now but it really has slowly taken a turn for the worse over time. At the moment it requires users to make an official account and limits free users to only five people in a given network. Been interested in giving alternatives a try lately, but I'm not sure where to start.

Tunngle looks like it might work nicely. Only problem is it's fucking bloated with ads.

And the fact that it's Windows-only.

Been toying around with OpenVPN lately but it's really a bitch to get a server actually working on Windows.

This is definitely great for getting around port forwarding and not having to deal with other clients' bullshit like ad bloat or limited connections. Although you're going to end up putting more trust in your fellow netplayers since there isn't a trustworthy third-party service doing the server hosting.
