8chan News Board Ring: /news+/ - News (Formatted)
Writing Board: /pen/ - 8chan Writes

 No.358[Last 50 Posts]

I have recently claimed this board; the previous owner had a huge power trip that resulted in him killing this board and then to stop maintaining it. If you see any edited posts or other mod activities before the 5th of March, 2015, that was the previous board owner.

I'd like to restore /new/ to what it was like on 4chan's /new/ before it was removed. Just a board to post and discuss news on with as absolute a license on free speech as is possible.

 No.360

Identify yourself boardowner are you hotwheelz, kraut, /int/or something else

 No.361

Just dropping a post here to boost your IP count, it's good to support small boards.

I like 8chan's /pol/ and /news+/ but it'd be nice to see another politics board without the focus on the incorrect part of the former nor the mandatory news-related system of the latter.

Also, it's harder for shills to shill across multiple boards than it is through just one.

Best of luck with your board, remember to advertise it in appropriate politics communities.

>>360
Some background info on you and your experience with image-boards would be nice.

 No.362

>>360
I'm just a guy who really liked browsing /new/ back in the day.

 No.363

>>362
This situation is bullshit though I do not like how things are being handled with relation to questions concerning /pol/s moderation
I dislike the mods on /pol/ even making threads saying so on /int/ which was fighting against hotpocket mods themselves
But suddenly finding /pol/ under attack from /int/, hotwheels and others is distressing I had hoped 8chan would have more unity /pol/ has not done anything to other boards to deserve this shitty treatment and posters who otherwise would have gladly come to a board like this will not
Look at what happened when hotwheels took over /pol/ the first time and made news+ hardly anyone posts there
I hope for these issues to be resolved

 No.364

>>361
I have been here since August this is my first imageboard

 No.365

>>361
I have no experience as a janitor or mod of any imageboard, forum, anything.

I've been on 4chan since 2005, staying mostly on /n/, /new/ and infrequently posting on many different boards (/ck/, /fit/, /int/, /sp/, /lit/, /b/, /v/, etc).

I really liked arguing and browsing /new/ and I was despondent that after a year of having infinite boards thanks to hotwheels, there was no replacement.

 No.366

>>363
Well, this board isn't meant as a slap in the face against /pol/. If anything, its m00t's fault originally for removing /new/ and creating /pol/ in its place; its just not the same thing.

I can understand
I never knew what /new/ was like obviously but I was very satisfied with 1st exodus /pol/ and then increasingly dissatisfied with the succeeding exoduses until 3rd one almost made it completely unusable its ok now not great but obviously some people still don't like it
What would the rules of this board be and why would they make it better than /pol/?

 No.370

>>368
I think the rules need to be formed from posting over time or when there's crises and their need becomes apparent. I don't want to impose rules that aren't necessary.

 No.371

>>370
And I thought that was why /pol/ is forming the way it is now
the first exodus brought over the users smart enough to drop 4chan and then a lot of trash started to come in
I remember once IDs were implemented how many people were caught trying to samefag
Also posters get tired of having cuck posts and people who don't want to participate in the board and just want to try to poke at the board

The idea is you shouldn't have to worry about shills, because there shouldn't be some central narrative to control in the first place. You can't piss in an ocean of piss.

Shilling as in advertising, whether is a product or idea, by infiltrating or deceiving, doesn't need a central ideology to subvert. If I'm trying to promote anti-Islam sentiment, for example, I can shill on a board with a multitude of views as well as on one that is 100% communist, for example, I'd just have to adjust my narrative and explore fraction points in each userbase viewpoints.

>>432
>>426
I'm in favor of keeping the feature, you can just hide your country flag if you don't want to use it and it gives you some insight on the background of who you're talking to.

 No.439

>>437
/pol/ in some sense has a narrative to push or at least it developed to the point where that was the case.

/new/ was more of a thunder dome kind of place where your posts sunk or swam on their own merits and it was actually fun to post about news.

/pol/, especially 8/pol/ is super serious - way more serious than early /pol/ or /new/

File: 1425671465010.jpg (128.3 KB, 600x868, 150:217, Linotype_Symphony_by_SUDOR.jpg)

So, we already have /news+/ which is an official board listed at the top of screen just after /b/…and it it barely functions…right now I'm seeing it at 9 posts per hour vs. /pol/s 396…outside of a large rebellion in /pol/ how is /new/ going to get any traction?

I think /news+/ was hobbled from the start by a total post limit per IP of 5; which HW recently lifted, but the damage has been done.

Perhaps if /news+/ was renamed /new/, and some other board rules were modified, to give it a fresh start it would have a chance to become more competitive with /pol/…

My only experience was the /new/ on 4chon. It went downhill over time, but in the beginning it was both 100x funnier than 8/pol/, plus it had deeper discussion. At the same time, if you wanted to fuck around and make a ridiculous thread or a creative troll persona, nobody really cared. There would be complaints, but that was all part of the joke.

It may be looked down upon, but I think you may as well given a try. You may not want to follow everything it says, yet it'll probably give you new insight on how to manage things. I just want you to make a meaningful place that attracts people.

I think it's good to look back and remind ourselves how we got here. You might be able to dig more stuff out.

Board Owner, try to structure the board into how the old ideals of /new/ were. Try not to place safety measures (such as IDs, captchas, shill banning, and more) in permanency. Remember, temporary safety measures in justified cases or times and low moderation for long term or longevity. Try not to restrict fun.

Don't favor certain groups by giving them features for an unfair advantage. /gamergate/ and /pol/ have a 15 and 10 added page for threads than the usual 15, meaning /pol/ has 25 and /gamergate/ has 30. Try to sticky things fairly.

On /pol/, certain threads were pinned or stickied for being "quality" such as immense national socialist "the flood comes" like threads.

Try not to bear to heavily on posting history on users because it can lead to certain biases. The stress on shilling can lead one to interpret a posters history as a shill if certain trends are found. It could be banning a person for having different views at different times when it could be possible that the poster just changed his opinion. It could be that having a history of funposting can lead to volunteers exploiting said history to denounce someone as a shill. It can also cause people using different proxies to be called out when it could just be a lurker or other cases of IP differences.

Indeed the emphasis on shills have increased to such a degree that paranoia and blaming/action based on assumption has increased. Perhaps to the point that shilling is considered good if it means pushing the "correct narrative". Perhaps being that "We've been shilled to death so it's right to shill right back at everything". Biases on shilling by ideological identity or opinion can lead to problems.

>tfw you remember a time when 4chan /new/ had more black cocks than it did anime images

/new/ on 4chan rarely had any anime fags (except for tripfags and avatar fags). /n/ was even rarer in the case that it had little anime influence. One of the slower boards really. Since 4chan was mainly anime, the news boards were subsequently spared from anime users- /a/ was more busy trolling video games and cartoons.

 No.709

>>370

In all honesty, if there is an influx of new users on this board that lean heavily to the left, there will be a noticeable increase in racial news. The left/right groups will end up duking it out for a long time, so I don't know how you'll moderate that.

It was a bit of a nuisance on 4chan because mods just stopped moderating- they'd rather see what happens when two fringe groups tried to self-moderate a board. It's like having /a/ and /co/ share the same board.

I'm seeing flags on /new/ for some reason, so I'll add this. Back on 2010 /new/, there was a difference between /int/ and /new/, being that /int/ incorporated international culture/news and European trolling. /new/ was majority American (Americans have to have their own board). They were more concerned with ideologies and left/right politics and economics (Keynesian economics; trickle down economics; lol buy gold!). Also news.

I never understood why moot decided to add international flags on /pol/, or why he added optional ideology flags before that. If someone can make a good argument, flags are entirely unnecessary. It kills the venom in arguments; makes the opponent acknowledge the user's dispositions (positive or negative, but the entire argument will devolve either way). /new/ never had flags. It's what makes them so hateful yet amusing in their responses. When you're on /new/, you didn't know what kind of anon you're talking to. You just knew that someone disagreed with you and you didn't like it.

For some reason /new/ would blame the left fags on immigrants from /b/ (back on 2010 4chan, no mentions of reddit or tumblr at this point. tumblr didn't become relevant till the tumblr raid). /b/ was known to be pretty left wing despite not wanting any political affiliation. /new/ was a battleground between /b/-Random, Stormfront, and trolls. As it turns out, /b/'s popularity back in the days did attract opposition. /n/ started out a bit to the left, but due to the nature of the news board, it started leaning right, then it became majority right after moot axed it because they called Obama a nigger. The board held a grudge that lasted into the next reincarnation as /new/.

There's a bunch of other information that I'm forgetting, like the /new/ exodus, the ED censorship, some relevant things like why /r9k/ and /new/ were deleted in favor of /soc/. Theories mostly, but apparently revolves around board histories.

I like to think that people on /pol/ and previous news boards are unconsciously going to end up like Usenet. The end battle will be between the Random and News board.

Flags were once enabled on the board. I didn't delete the posts, so there they are.
